Filming has wrapped on a horror thriller called The Cure, and Deadline reports that the film stars Ashley Greene of the Twilight franchise and genre regular David Dastmalchian, who was recently seen in the likes of Late Night with the Devil, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Afraid, and The Boogeyman. Newcomer Samantha Cochran also has a lead role.
Nancy Leopardi, who previously directed Nanny Cam and Lethal Seduction, was at the helm of this one, working from a screenplay by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, the writing duo behind Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane. The story they crafted for The Cure centers on Cochran’s character, Ally Braun, an adopted 16-year-old with a mysterious illness who learns her bio-tech billionaire parents (Dastmalchian and Greene) are harvesting her blood for nefarious purposes.
Sydney Taylor (American Born Chinese), Tyler Lawrence Gray (Wolfpack), and Dylan Flashner (Running on Empty) round out the cast.

What these actresses have isn’t just any friendship; it’s an extended family dynamic. When River Phoenix, Mathis’ boyfriend and a beloved star, tragically passed away in 1993, it was undeniably one of the “scariest experiences” in Bullock’s life. Yet during those dark days, the latter’s sympathy and unflagging support provided a silver lining, mirroring her extraordinary empathy and deep bond with Mathis.

Lucy Hale's performance shines in the film. Keir Gilchrist and Hale have great chemistry. The cast struggles with a lack of direction and odd acting choices.

Running on Empty aims to be a celebration of life amid uncertainty and has a stacked cast, but struggles with its scattered narrative and unclear direction. The film successfully borrows from successful comedy-dramas, with quirky characters and a valiantly oddball effort at storytelling. It's just too all over the place. Lucy Hale is excellent, but sadly her role is buried at the end.

The Karate Kid franchise which began in 1984, starred Ralph Macchio as Daniel Larusso. He played a young Italian American teenager who learns to defend himself against school bully Johnny Lawrence played by William Zabka, by learning martial arts from eccentric war veteran Mr Miyagi. Following two more films with the two actors, the franchise further expanded with Hillary Swank and later, with Jaden Smith playing the lead protagonist.

The film series gave rise to a 2018 comedy television series called Cobrai Kai which saw Macchio and Zabka reprising their famous roles more than 3 decades later in a continuation of their rivalry-turned-friendship. Apart from feeling a sense of nostalgia on portraying these beloved characters again, Zabka was extremely excited to co-star with 3 alums of the original films with whom he hadn’t had the opportunity to star with in the earlier installments.

Marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Daniel André, this was originally titled Mort in Sherman Oaks before the new title change, since it's set in the San Fernando Valley. The film follows an odd young man named Mort who discovers he has less than a year to live. After hearing the news, his fiancé leaves him, then he meets Kate using a dating service that matches people by their death dates, all while being stalked by a disturbed pimp. Sidney Lumet was the Oscar-nominated director who proved incredibly prolific during his career, directing over 40 movies in 50 years, from his feature debut “12 Angry Men” (1957) through his cinematic farewell “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” (2007). But how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born on June 25, 1924, Lumet got his start as a child actor, appearing in “One Third of a Nation” (1939) when he was 15 years old. After serving during WWII, he quickly began directing Off-Broadway plays before moving into the burgeoning medium of television, where he helmed hundreds of live teleplays. While working on episodes of “Playhouse 90,” “Kraft Theater” and many more, he honed his abilities to shoot quickly and economically.
His turned to movies with “12 Angry Men,” an adaptation of Reginald Rose‘s TV drama about a lone juror (Henry Fonda) holding out during a murder trial.

Through the lens of 2024, “Dogfight” plays like a subtle, personal film you would expect from indie director Nancy Savoca (“Household Saints”), but that’s not what Warner Bros. thought they were making.
“They were thinking ‘Porky’s.’ They thought it was a comedy,” said director Nancy Savoca while on IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast to discuss “Dogfight,” which is entering the Criterion Collection on April 30.
At the end of the 1980s headed into the early ’90s, when Warners was developing Bob Comfort’s “Dogfight” screenplay, teen comedies were big business for the studios. Alongside the wild success of the classic slate of teen comedies John Hughes wrote, directed, or produced, the “Porky’s” trilogy came to define the sex comedies of the era. It’s through this lens the studio saw the dogfight competition in Comfort’s script: A group of young soldiers pick up the “ugliest” woman they can find, bring her to a bar,...

Christian Slater replaced River Phoenix in Interview with the Vampire after Phoenix's tragic death. Slater was initially worried about taking on Phoenix's character due to the circumstances surrounding his passing. Slater still wonders what happened to his character, Daniel, as the movie ends on a cliffhanger.
Christian Slater was cast in Interview with the Vampire only because of a tragic event. Interview with the Vampire is the 1994 gothic horror movie adaptation of the 1976 novel of the same name by Anne Rice. Starring Tom Cruise as Lestat de Lioncourt and Brad Pitt as Louis de Pointe du Lac, Interview with the Vampire is a classic of LGBTQ+ vampire movies, a genre that has unexpectedly become the home of many queer TV shows and movies. Rice's novel is just a part of the 13-novel franchise The Vampire Chronicles, which also ties into her New Tales of the Vampires and Lives of the Mayfair Witches,...

Kate Winslet is striking fear into the hearts of her not-so-loyal subjects in HBO‘s The Regime teaser trailer. From Will Tracy and Frank Rich, the complex minds behind Succession, comes a limited series about power, corruption, and subterfuge.
The Regime “tells the story of one year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel.”
“Since I became your Chancellor, we have grown considerably as a country. It is time to show America and the world precisely what we are worth,” Winslet’s Chancellor says in The Regime teaser trailer while addressing a crowd, asserting her authority. The vibes in the room quickly become hostile, eliciting fear and confusion about who’s in charge of the population’s wellbeing.
Joining the previously announced cast of Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton and Hugh Grant, the newly announced cast members include Danny Webb,...

Director Denny Tedesco previously scored a hit among music fans with his 2008 film “The Wrecking Crew,” a documentary about the battalion of 1960s studio musicians whose names were little known even among the cognoscenti, until these unknown soldiers started to quietly get their due decades later. Although it took another 15 years after that film to come to fruition, Tedesco had an easy go-to for an unofficial sequel. “Immediate Family” focuses on a smaller cadre of players that soon came to dominate the L.A. recording scene and who were, for a time, known collectively as the Section. One thing the earlier movie had that this one doesn’t was a sense of injustice corrected, because let’s face it — in the 1970s, everybody knew their names.
Well, let’s not exaggerate — maybe not quite everyone was devoted to fondling LP packaging and devouring it for information, even in the physical media era.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

“Hollywood is mourning the loss of two of its own today,” the radio newscaster announced 30 years ago. My ears perked up, perhaps a bit more than the average listener’s would. “Federico Fellini,” he continued, “is dead at the age of 73.”
“Ah, well,” I thought. “He’s been ill for some time.”
“And in Los Angeles,” the newscaster said, “actor River Phoenix…” A sudden rush of adrenaline made my heart race and I felt as if I’d been punched in the stomach.
Five years earlier, I had spent the afternoon of River’s 18th birthday with him. At the time, I was working on a daily radio network program where I chatted with stars of new movies. Of the hundreds of actors I’ve interviewed, River easily made it to my personal “Top 10 Favorites” list.

When River Phoenix died on October 31, 1993, after Phoenix collapsed outside of the now notorious Viper Room nightclub in West Hollywood, Phoenix’s death embodied the tragedy of early death and unfulfilled potential, as while Phoenix’s colleagues and followers have aged considerably since Phoenix’s untimely death, Phoenix will always be frozen in time.
Indeed, as Phoenix’s perpetual youthfulness is, along with Phoenix’s undeniable talent, the centerpiece of Phoenix’s enduring legacy, this also represents a morbid fascination, as while Phoenix would now be fifty-three years old, had he lived, Phoenix died as a twenty-three-year-old actor who seemed poised to become one of the most important adult actors of his generation but is best remembered for his teenage roles in the films Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Running on Empty, and Stand by Me.

River Phoenix played a young Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade but did not return for The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles TV series. Phoenix rejected reprising his role for the show as he didn't want to be typecast as a TV actor and preferred to focus on his movie career. While we can only speculate, Phoenix's involvement in the TV series may have altered certain aspects of the portrayal of Indiana Jones, but ultimately Sean Patrick Flanery did a good job in the role.

Updated, with comment from Ramaswamy’s campaign: Eminem wants Vivek Ramaswamy to lose “Lose Yourself” and other rap works from his campaign’s playlist.
Music rights management service BMI sent Ramaswamy’s campaign a letter notifying them that Marshall Mathers, aka Eminem, had objected to their use of his compositions. (Read the Eminem letter). The BMI attorney, Pamela Williams, also informed them that the Eminem works are being removed from a BMI license agreement with the campaign.
“BMI will consider any performance of the Eminem Works by the Vivek 2024 campaign from this date forward to be a material breach of the Agreement for which BMI reserves all rights and remedies with respect thereto,” Williams wrote in the letter, which also was obtained by Deadline.
Ramaswamy drew huge attention for performing Eminem’s Oscar-winning 2002 hit “Lose Yourself” at the Iowa State Fair earlier this month.

A bold departure from France’s cinema tradition of social realism, Thomas Cailley’s widely ambitious sophomore outing “The Animal Kingdom” is equally a creature-filled dystopia, an emotionally charged father-and-son drama and a coming-of-age tale.
The character-driven film world premiered to warm reviews at the Cannes Film Festival where it bowed the Un Certain Regard section. “The Animal Kingdom” is represented in international market by Studiocanal and was produced by Pierre Guyard at Nord Ouest Films, and co-produced by Artemis.
“The Animal Kingdom” takes place in an undetermined future in France which has been swept by a genetic disease causing people to transform into creatures that are being hunted down and killed or institutionalized by authorities. Kircher, the breakout star of Christophe Honoré’s “Winter Boy,” plays 16-year-old Emile whose mother was institutionalized after showing first signs of a genetic mutation. He lives with his father Francois (Romain Duris) who is struggling to overcome grief.

David Lindley, the dexterous and elfin multi-instrumentalist who died yesterday at the age of 78, could delight in sharing a few tales about his days on the road with Jackson Browne, James Taylor, and the other leading troubadours and songwriters he backed during the Seventies and Eighties. Judd Hirsch is a living legend. Best known for his portrayal of cabbie Alex Rieger, the warm, principled central character of the classic sitcom "Taxi," Hirsch has been effortlessly segueing from television to stage to film and back again for over 50 years. He won two Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Emmys for "Taxi," and two Tonys for his performances in Herb Gardner's "Conversations with My Father" and "I'm Not Rappaport." He received a Best Supporting Actor nomination in 1980 for his portrayal of the tough, yet compassionate psychiatrist Dr. Berger in Robert Redford's "Ordinary People." He probably would've won that year, but he was the victim of category fraud when Paramount opted to run his co-star, Timothy Hutton, in the Supporting Actor category rather than Best Actor, even though the young performer was clearly the lead of the movie. Hutton won, and Hirsch hasn't been nominated since.

Having once graced the cover of magazines like Tiger Beat, Leonardo DiCaprio knows a thing or two about being a teenybopper, and he knows a thing or two about outliving all that and coming to be regarded as a serious dramatic actor. So it is that DiCaprio has occasionally been in a position to dispense career advice to other young actors in Hollywood, the latest being "Dune" star Timothée Chalamet.
Chalamet is well-established as an Oscar-nominated thesp, but he, too, is something of a magazine idol, who just became the first guy to appear solo on the cover of the British edition of Vogue. Plimpton has acted since childhood, starring in such iconic films as The Goonies, Parenthood and Running on Empty and shows like ER and The Good Wife, for which she won an Emmy. Last year she won an Independent Spirit Award for her role in Fran Kranz’s film Mass.
Plimpton says of Sprung, “The intention is not to mock anyone, it’s just to find a little bit of humor in the absurdity of everything that we thought we had to do, and that we did do, like hoarding toilet paper and selling it for 20 a roll.

Maggie Gyllenhaal (‘The Lost Daughter’) is now an Oscar-nominated screenwriter, just like her mother
Maggie Gyllenhaal just earned her second Oscar nomination for writing the screenplay to “The Lost Daughter,” her feature directorial debut. This Best Adapted Screenplay bid follows in the footsteps of only two other women, Emma Thompson and Ruth Gordon, who also earned Oscar kudos for acting and writing. More significantly, however, is that there are now two Oscar-nominated screenwriters in the Gyllenhaal family, with her mother Naomi Foner having earned her own writing bid in the late 1980s.
Foner was a Best Original Screenplay nominee for the 1988 film “Running on Empty,” the Sidney Lumet film that starred River Phoenix in his only Oscar-nominated performance. After picking up an Oscar nomination for her adapted screenplay of Elena Ferrante’s novel “The Lost Daughter,” Maggie Gyllenhaal joins a very short list of three women who have been nominated for acting and writing. She previously scored a nod in 2011 for her supporting performance opposite Jeff Bridges in “Crazy Heart.”
“My mother told me this, so you might have to fact-check it,” Gyllenhaal told TheWrap with a laugh, admitting she wasn’t aware she had just made history. Her mother was correct – only Ruth Gordon and Emma Thompson have been cited in both writing and acting categories in the past. “If that’s true, that is my favorite thing,” Gyllenhaal said. “I’m so thrilled to be in that club.”
And while we’re on the subject of Gyllenhaal’s mother, there’s another bit of history making going on. Gyllenhaal and her mom, Naomi Foner, are the...

Filmmaking is quite literally in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s genes. Her mother is Oscar-winning screenwriter Naomi Foner (“Running on Empty”) who also directed the 2013 drama “Very Good Girls.” And her father Stephen Gyllenhaal has directed such films as 1992 “Waterland,” which featured his daughter, and 1993 “A Dangerous Woman.” But it took time for the Oscar-nominated actress (“Crazy Heart’) to follow in her parents’ footsteps.
“I think that now I have directed, I can see in a way I always was a director,” she noted in a recent American Cinematheque Zoom conversation with Oscar-winner Guillermo Del Toro (“The Shape of Water”). She added, though, it was so deep into her psyche that “it was even a secret for me.” She recently picked up Gotham Independent Film honors for writing and directing her first film, Netflix’s “The Lost Daughter,” starring Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson, Ed Harris and her husband Peter Sarsgaard.

The Criterion Channel’s February Lineup Includes Melvin Van Peebles, Douglas Sirk, Laura Dern & More
Another month, another Criterion Channel lineup. In accordance with Black History Month their selections are especially refreshing: seven by Melvin Van Peebles, five from Kevin Jerome Everson, and Criterion editions of The Harder They Come and The Learning Tree.
Regarding individual features I’m quite happy to see Abderrahmane Sissako’s fantastic Bamako, last year’s big Sundance winner (and Kosovo’s Oscar entry) Hive, and the remarkably beautiful Portuguese feature The Metamorphosis of Birds. Add a three-film Laura Dern collection (including the recently canonized Smooth Talk) and Pasolini’s rarely shown documentary Love Meetings to make this a fine smorgasboard.
See the full list of February titles below and more on the Criterion Channel.
Alan & Naomi, Sterling Van Wagenen, 1992
All That Heaven Allows, Douglas Sirk, 1955
The Angel Levine, Ján Kadár, 1970
Babylon, Franco Rosso, 1980
Babymother, Julian Henriques, 1998
Bamako, Abderrahmane Sissako, 2006
Beat Street, Stan Lathan, 1984

It took playing a woman who is empowered by becoming a film director in HBO series “The Deuce” for actress Maggie Gyllenhaal to imagine becoming one herself. As soon as she did, after binging the books of Elena Ferrante, from “My Brilliant Friend” to “The Days of Abandonment,” Gyllenhaal was inspired to take the plunge. Three years ago, on the verge of her 40th birthday, Gyllenhaal first wrote to Ferrante, asking the Italian author (whose identity is protected by her publisher) to let her option her 2006 novel “The Lost Daughter” for the movies. After a few email exchanges, the writer said yes. But her contract with Gyllenhaal was void, she told the actress, if she didn’t direct the feature herself. (Ferrante explained why in The Guardian.)
Gyllenhaal eventually obtained the author’s blessing on her script — which often departs from the original) —and cast Oscar winner Olivia Colman (“The Favourite...
