Luke Skywalker’s medal from A New Hope is but one lot in a huge array of film memorabilia going up for auction this month.
Most of us don’t have tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of dollars to spend on film memorabilia, but still: it’s nice to dream. This month will see Propstore auction off a quite mind-melting array of movie-related items, with costumes and props from major blockbusters to cult obscurities.
One of the big-ticket items is arguably Luke Skywalker’s medal, as seen at the end of 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope. It has a starting bid of $150,000, and is expected to fetch somewhere between $300,000 to $600,000.
According to Propstore’s listing, only two of these medals – made from resin and covered in gold leaf – were made for the production, and while Mark Hamill wore the one up for sale in A New Hope, Harrison Ford...

We see recasts pretty regularly on the big screen. For some franchises like Friday the 13th and Halloween, it’s almost a tradition. It’s less common in a non-genre arena. However, other major films have seen some of their important characters get recast for various reasons… and keep in mind that we’re only talking about movies here, not TV shows, so you won’t hear about Michiel Huisman replacing Ed Skrein as Daario Naharis on Game of Thrones, Charles Melton replacing Ross Butler on Riverdale, Liam Hemsworth replacing Henry Cavill on The Witcher, Janet Hubert being switched with Daphne Maxwell Reid as Aunt Vivian Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Nathan Parsons replacing Luke Grimes as James Kent on True Blood, Alessandra Torresani being replaced by Mae Whitman on Arrested Development, or Jeff the cab driver being recast in the final season of Better Call Saul. Don’t expect another Back to the Future film, as co-writer Bob Gale seemingly shoots down the possibility despite fan desires.
On Sunday, February 2, the Saturn Awards honored Back to the Future on its 40th Anniversary with the George Pal Memorial Award. Gale, Christopher Lloyd, and Lea Thompson received the honor, and the writer addressed fan desire for a fourth installment of the sci-fi film.
“People always say, ‘When are you guys going to do Back to the Future 4? And we say, ‘F*** you!’ Gale jokingly said while accepting the honor. “You can quote me on that.”
He continued, “No, we made three terrific movies and people kept asking for more Back to the Future. So we made Back to the Future: The Musical, which Chris and Lea have attended on several occasions.”
The musical adaptation of the film ended its Broadway run last month, and a touring production continues throughout North America.

Time travel is a fascinating subject, and people love to watch movies and shows about it. When we talk about time travel, the first film that pops into our minds is Back to the Future. There are three films in the franchise, and the Og film is considered a classic by cinephiles. Recently, the film’s screenwriter, Bob Gale, addressed the possibility of a fourth film. Before learning of that, let’s check out the trilogy at the worldwide box office.

Bob Gale, the screenwriter behind the iconic sci-fi adventure franchise Back to the Future, has shared his take on the possibility of a sequel. Gale, who co-wrote the first film with Robert Zemeckis and then took care of the rest by himself, candidly says "F**k you" to all those who keep asking. And that's a direct quote.
The writer joined Christopher Lloyd (Emmett "Doc" Brown) and Lea Thompson at the Saturn Awards to talk about the legacy of the franchise. Per Collider, Gale is in tune with what Zemeckis and others have said in the past:

As the world prepares to see a new He-Man hit the big screen next year, it has been sadly reported that the voice behind the original animated version of the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe character, John Erwin, has died aged 88. The actor, who began his career working in adverts in the late 1960s, made a number of other appearances, but for many, it was his role as He-Man that he will be most remembered for. As well as leading the show in the role of He-Man, Erwin also played the monstrously dim-witted Beast Man.
According to PR firm Celebworx, who represented the star, Erwin actually died last month, “around December 20,” of natural causes. The announcement not only drew reactions from many children of the ‘80s, but also Erwin’s costars, Alan Oppenheimer, who voiced Skeletor, and Melendy Britt, who provided the voice of She-Ra. In a...

John Erwin, the reclusive actor who provided the voices for the heroic title character in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and the vain frenemy Reggie Mantle in a series of Archie cartoons, has died. He was 88.
Erwin died of natural causes “around Dec. 20” in his home in Camarillo, California, his reps at the PR firm Celebworx announced.
For nearly a decade starting in 1969, Erwin was heard in dozens of TV commercials as the snarky Morris the Cat, the finicky orange tabby who would eat nothing but the 9Lives brand of cat food. The hugely successful campaign was created by the Leo Burnett advertising firm.
Earlier, Erwin was seen on camera when he recurred as the cattle driver Teddy on CBS’ Rawhide, starring Clint Eastwood.

Making a film often has the objective of showing it to people, but what if you make a movie that no one alive today is ever going to get to see? Whatever it may be, it’s still a banger of a marketing campaign, as was the case with 100 Years, a film made to promote Louis Xiii, a cognac that takes a century to make as well.

To many, he will always be Frodo Baggins, the brave little furry-footed hobbit who volunteers to bear the burden of carrying the dreaded One Ring as he leaves his bucolic existence behind while sacrificing himself to save Middle-earth in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
But Elijah Wood has had quite a varied career beyond the Shire ever since he made his film debut at 8-years-old with a small part as Video Game Boy #2 in 1989’s “Back to the Future Part II.” He would go on to land the coveted central role in the epic fantasy franchise based on J.R.R. The original ideas for Back To The Future Part II's script had the potential to fix what many critics considered to be the sequel's biggest problem. The second installment in one of the consistently best movie trilogies from start to finish, Back To The Future Part II depicts Marty McFly and Doc Brown traveling to the year 2015, where their DeLorean time machine is stolen by their nemesis, Biff Tannen. Upon discovering that Tannen plans to cause trouble with the help of a stolen sports almanac, Marty and Doc must return to the year 1955 to save the future.
While now considered one of the best sequels ever made, reviews for Back To The Future Part II were significantly mixed compared to the first movie; the sequel's score on Rotten Tomatoes sits at 64%, lower than the original's 90%. Part II received criticism for its darker themes compared to the original and screenplay.

As one of the most beloved movie trilogies of all time, Back to the Future has no shortage of iconic scenes. High school student Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Doctor Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) are one of the most well-known duos in cinematic history as they travel to the past and future via a DeLorean time machine. Back to the Future's various timelines spanning from 1885 to 2015 allow the story to continue for three movies and keep the trilogy engaging.
The movies' iconic nature is largely grounded in Back to the Future's best quotes, ranging from Doc Brown's "Great Scott!" to Marty saying, "Nobody calls me chicken!" Many of the quotes and scenes from the first Back to the Future movie made such a strong impact that they are repeated, albeit in different ways, during the second and third films. The reason why Back to the Future Part II is so dark is because one of the original Back to the Future cast members refused to reprise his role in the sequel. Back to the Future Part II follows on from the cliffhanger ending of the first Back to the Future, as Doc Brown takes Marty McFly into the future to prevent his son from making a huge mistake. The plot takes a grim turn when Doc and Marty return to a dystopian alternate version of the present.
This dark turn fit in with a trend of sequels going darker than their predecessor. The trend originated with The Empire Strikes Back and could later be seen in movies like The Dark Knight and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Critics and audiences don't always see eye-to-eye, and there are plenty of great sci-fi movies that fans love despite their poor reviews. There are several metrics that can be used to measure how people respond to a movie, and these statistics often highlight the movies that create a rift between critics and fans. Audiences are generally more appreciative of sheer entertainment value, while critics place more emphasis on character and original storytelling.
Sci-fi movies vary wildly between artistic high-concept dramas and big-budget blockbusters. Many of the highest-grossing movies of all time are sci-fi movies, which shows the genre's potential to appeal to massive audiences. However, there are plenty of sci-fi movies which try to appeal to audiences at the cost of turning critics away. Most of the time, box office success is more valuable than critical acclaim.

Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future trilogy is pure 1980s nostalgia. The first film came out in 1985 during the height of Michael J. Fox's fame as Alex P. Keaton on the very popular TV series Family Ties. It was by far the biggest box office draw of the year and led to two sequels filmed at the same time: 1989's Back to the Future Part II and 1990's Back to the Future Part III. If you're of a certain age, you can't watch those movies and not be transported back to your childhood. From the look of the DeLorean, Marty McFly's truck, as well as the Pepsi tie-ins, it's truly nostalgia overload. In Back to the Future Part II, it's Marty himself who gets to experience the nostalgia. He might be thirty years in the future this time, but when he walks into the Cafe 80s, it's almost like he's back home.

The Back to the Future trilogy is one of the most beloved franchises in film history, known for its inventive storytelling, unforgettable characters, and time-traveling adventures. It's safe to say Back To The Future wasn't only a great movie, but the launching pad to an iconic trilogy praised for its interconnecting stories of set-ups and payoffs. However, when the first film was released in 1985, a sequel wasn’t part of the plan. The filmmakers crafted a satisfying ending with a thrilling cliffhanger, where Doc Brown returns from the future to whisk Marty and his girlfriend, Jennifer, off in the flying DeLorean.

The Back to the Future franchise was a smash hit, but the story never progressed beyond Back to the Future Part III. Of course, many would have been thrilled if Back to the Future 4 had become a reality. These movies are cult classics, and the fact that Marty McFly's story revolves around time travel makes a sequel possible in just about any decade. Although the wait between the first and second Back to the Future movies was torturous for some, fans didn't have to wait long for Back to the Future Part III (and for good reason). The popular, acclaimed franchise, created by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, follows Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd's Doc Brown, an unlikely time-traveling duo. Over the course of the three movies, Marty and Doc find themselves in various precarious situations, whether in the past, present, or future. In Back to the Future Part III, Marty and Doc travel to 1885.
Following the ending of Back to the Future Part II, Back to the Future Part III picks up right where the previous movie left off with Marty working to save Doc, who gets trapped in 1885. However, once he gets there, Marty realizes returning home with Doc will be more complicated than previously thought.

In 1989, a film with a bonkers premise was released in theaters and became one of the highest-grossing films of the year. Look Who's Talking, by writer/director Amy Heckerling, helped launch John Travolta back to Hollywood stardom, but it was a project that almost didn't happen. Look Who's Talking is a romantic comedy with a basic plot: Mollie Jensen gets pregnant after she has an affair with one of her clients. On the day of Mikey's birth, Mollie jumps into a taxicab, and the driver, James, is mistaken for the baby's father. After a while, he becomes Mikey's father figure, babysitter, and Mollie's lover.
Sounds like a regular comedy, right? Well, it isn't. From the conception of the fetus, viewers listen to the precocious thoughts of the baby. No one else can hear the baby but the audience, who are treated to none other than Bruce Willis' voice as the baby.

Back to the Future Part II takes the franchise ahead to 2015, and although the movie didn't predict the future with complete accuracy, there was a specific piece of foreshadowing that came eerily close. The first Back to the Future sequel actually got several things right about 2015, despite being released in 1989. However, there is one piece of the movie's lore that resonated particularly well with viewers, and the prediction was pretty much fulfilled in the real world in 2002.
The Back to the Future movies are widely considered to form one of the best and most consistent trilogies of all time. Led throughout by Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown, the Back to the Future cast takes the audience through a thrilling time travel adventure that features almost as much nail-biting jeopardy as it boasts comedic moments. It’s been almost 25 years since the release of Back to the Future Part III, and for now, the movie still doesn’t have a streaming home. Back to the Future Part II was re-released in theaters earlier this year and earned only $11,000 on very limited screens, but now Hot Toy is giving Bttf fans something to get fired up about. On its official Instagram page, Hot Toys unveiled a new DeLorean figure from Back to the Future Part III that comes in at ⅙ size, the traditional size for a Hot Toys figure. It measures exactly 72cm long and includes multiple LED light-up options for exterior and interior design, as well as the signature gull-wing doors, a highly-detailed hood box with belts, and cable wires that stretch across the whole vehicle.

The opening of Back to the Future Part II pays homage to its predecessor in the most unexpected way — by recreating the final scene of the original movie, but with a subtle and funny twist. The sequel picks up right where the first movie ends: with Christopher Lloyd's Doc Brown reappearing in the DeLorean.
In both the original final scene and the reshot opening, Doc convinces Marty and his girlfriend, Jennifer, to return to the future in order to help their children. However, reshooting the Back to the Future ending for Part II wasn't just a practical choice for continuity and reminding audiences what happened before; it was one that carved out an indelible comedic touch to open the sequel.

Threequels can be hit-and-miss, but the best ones build on the two movies that came before them with their own original ideas. Sequels are already notoriously difficult, so a second sequel can be a step too far for many franchises. Alien 3, Batman Forever and Home Alone 3 are just a few examples of terrible threequels that followed two great movies. Fortunately, not all franchises follow this trend.
A great threequel can often be the perfect finale to a trilogy. Some of the best trilogies of all time are only held in such high esteem because they end their stories with such aplomb, like The Lord of the Rings, the original Star Wars trilogy and Back to the Future. In other cases, a threequel can set a franchise up for a long and successful run. While episodic franchises like James Bond or the Dollars trilogy have great third movies, these...

Marty McFly never tells his parents he traveled through time to bring them together in Back to the Future, but George had more than enough clues to piece it together. When Marty goes back in time and unwittingly bumps into his parents, he doesnt tell them hes their son from the future. Lorraine assumes his name is Calvin Klein, because its written in his underwear, and he just rolls with it. He pretended Doc Brown was his Uncle Doc and he made sure his parents fell in love without revealing he came from the future.
But Marty didnt do a flawless job of hiding his tracks. He may not have outright said that he came from the future, but he did use some of his knowledge of the future to ensure that George would ask Lorraine to the school dance. When that stuff came to pass in the years that followed,...

While some initially viewed the sequel with mixed opinions, it has since earned its place as a beloved installment in the franchise. Older fans are now revisiting it with fresh appreciation, while a new generation is discovering the film’s daring vision and iconic story. Back in 1989, creating the futuristic world of 2015 and scenes where characters meet their past and future selves was no small feat. With CGI still in its infancy, director Robert Zemeckis turned to groundbreaking practical effects. One standout moment featured Michael J. Fox playing multiple members of the McFly family seated at the same kitchen table. This scene required meticulous planning and execution, showcasing Zemeckis’s expertise and creativity as a director. Product placement is a prevalent aspect of filmmaking. Sometimes, it's hilariously terrible (like the way most Michael Bay movies handle it), but at other times it's seamlessly integrated into the rest of the film. Still, there is a difference between product placement being used to populate a cinematic world with recognizable brands and when it's a mandate from above — whether it's to alleviate the budget or because the studio behind a movie is owned by a conglomerate that makes sodas.
Such was the case when, in 1982, Coca-Cola acquired Columbia Pictures for three-quarters of a billion dollars. This, in turn, gave rise to an era of blatant product placement, whether it was E.T. eating a bunch of Reese's Pieces or "Back to the Future Part II" featuring so much Pepsi product placement that it was literally a part of the plot.

Have you ever wondered why, in the year 2024, we don’t have flying cars or instant teleportation the way some of our favorite movies and TV shows predicted we would? We look at entertainment from the 70’’s and 80’s and see fantastical inventions plastered on our screens of a future that never actually ever happened. Granted, who would want to live in the bleak futures of a Mad Max or Blade Runner but I’d gladly slide my small Pizza Hut pizza into a hydrator and have it come out a fully cooked delicious meal in seconds the way they did in Back To The Future Part II, which if you think about it: the future of Back To The Future Part II now takes place in our past!
For our newest series, we wanted to take a look at movies of the past and see how they predicted the future.

An iconic item from the Back to the Future franchise has been sold at an auction for nearly $100,000. The franchise kicked off in 1985 with the movie of the same name, which starred Christopher Lloyd as mad scientist Doc Brown and Michael J. Fox as his teenage helper. The movie, which was directed by Robert Zemeckis, follows the duo accidentally being trapped in the 1950s, where, in addition to finding a way home, Marty must encourage his parents to fall in love to prevent himself from vanishing out of existence.
The movie was a smash hit, grossing $388.8 million against its $19 million budget and spawning a full Back to the Future trilogy. The 1989 sequel Back to the Future Part II saw the duo travel forward in time to 2015 before returning to the 1950s to correct a cataclysmic mistake. When it first hit cinemas in 1985, Back to the Future earned rave reviews. It even went on to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay as well as become the top grossing film of that year. The ideal casting of Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd as the time travelers Marty McFly and Doc Brown, respectively, became pop culture icons, as did the DeLorean time machine. Expectations ran high when Universal Pictures announced director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale would return for the sequel, along with Fox and Lloyd for a sequel.

Director Robert Zemeckis is used to conjuring the impossible.
In “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” he had flesh-and-blood actors like Bob Hoskins convincingly interact with animated characters; with “Forrest Gump” he had the title character (essayed by Tom Hanks) meet famous historical figures; “What Lies Beneath” imagined what would happen if Alfred Hitchcock had access to cutting-edge visual effects. He made three entire movies exclusively using performance capture technology. And on and on and on.
His latest film “Here,” which is now playing in theaters, offered a different sort of challenge – the entire movie is told from a fixed vantagepoint, through various eras. The camera never moves. It begins in prehistoric times, eventually settling into a handful of suburban living rooms throughout the years. The one we chiefly focus on is the home of Hanks and Robin Wright, both “Forrest Gump” alums, who begin in the 1960s and travel through modern day.

Robert Zemeckis, the director and co-creator of Back to the Future, is shutting down the idea of remaking or creating a sequel to the franchise.
In a new interview, the filmmaker revealed that he would only revisit the world he co-created with Bob Gale if he created a movie musical.
“You know, we have to say, ‘There are different things that might work.’ Something like that, you know? But to remake the movie or to suggest that there’s a Back to the Future 4, it just isn’t in the cards,” Zemeckis said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
Zemeckis said Universal has asked him if he was open to revisiting the Back to the Future universe, joking that the studio does it “every six months.”
“I would like to do Back to the Future: The Musical,” Zemeckis said. “Just like [Mel Brooks] did with The Producers. I would love to do that.

The Back to the Future franchise includes three feature films, and director Robert Zemeckis has long maintained that there will never be a sequel to Back to the Future Part III. However, he's still open to making another kind of film for the franchise.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Zemeckis was asked if there were any different kinds of projects he'd like to take on in the future, such as his first musical. The director said that he'd be up to make a feature film version of Back to the Future: The Musical, the hit musical inspired by the film with music by Alan Silvestri and lyrics by Glen Ballard. Zemeckis even revealed that he'd pitched this idea to Universal, but the pitch was not greenlit.

A character besides Marty McFly played by Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future Part III was actually teased by a subtle line in the first movie. Given the ever-changing timelines of the Back to the Future trilogy, each film had the opportunity to play around with its older, younger, and alternate versions of its main characters. This led to several actors playing multiple roles in Back to the Future, including main cast members like Fox, Lea Thompson, and Thomas F. Wilson.
Aside from some obvious Back to the Future recastings, the actors in each installment remained the same across the trilogy. This allowed the series to feel connected and thoroughly planned out in a way many modern trilogies do not. Michael J. Fox was a big factor in this. Though having tackled time-travel adventures and classic fantasy stories, Robert Zemeckis says that Here is probably the most difficult movie he's ever made. The cast of Here reunites Zemeckis with Forrest Gump stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, while also starring Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly. Based on Richard McGuire's graphic novel of the same name, the movie is set in only one room in a home, and follows several families who occupy the house over the course of a century. In addition to the limitations that filming in only one room provides, the story of Here also required Hanks and Wright to be de-aged.

As far as classic trilogies go, Back to the Future has to rank at the top of the pantheon. Yet, it’s always felt as if their third film, Back to the Future: Part III, which features Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly going back in time to rescue Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) from the old west, always went a little underappreciated by fans. Why?
Truth be told, as good as the two sequels are, neither quite manages to outshine the 1985 original, which ranks as perhaps the most impeccably crafted blockbuster of all time. For his follow-ups, Robert Zemeckis was ahead of his time in that he shot both movies back to back as one giant film, allowing him to release them six months apart, at Christmas of 1989 and the Summer of 1990. In fact, Back to the Future: Part II ended with a trailer for the third film.

A throwaway line that Doc Brown says to Marty McFly when he shows him the DeLorean in the first Back to the Future movie slyly foreshadowed the almanac storyline for the sequel. Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gales Back to the Future script is a masterclass in plant-and-payoff; almost everything in the movie is a setup that builds to a payoff later on. Lorraine telling her kids how she fell in love with George ends up being key to Martys plan to ensure they get together when he goes back in time to 1955 and starts being erased from existence.

In 1985, one of the most popular films of all-time was released. Back to the Future was the highest-grossing movie of the year by far and made its star, Michael J. Fox, known then for Family Ties, one of the most famous actors in the game. The adventures of Marty McFly and Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) were so compelling that there had to be a sequel. Back to the Future ended up becoming a trilogy, and the first sequel, Back to the Future Part II, returned to theaters for its 35th anniversary. There is so much to love about the Back to the Future movies, but that's not to say they're without flaws. Most of those flaws thankfully lie in the deleted scenes. Back to the Future Part II may very well contain a sizeable blemish, but omitting it might have made the problem worse.
