Today, Taylor Sheridan is known as the man at the center of a vast TV empire that stretches from "Yellowstone" and its many spin-offs to multiple other premium dramas which include "Lawmen: Bass Reeves," "Lioness," and "Tulsa King." Taylor Sheridan TV shows are almost too numerous to count at this point. But the man wasn't always the prolific writer and producer he's known as today. In fact, he started out on a very different career path in Hollywood.
Specifically, Sheridan started as an actor in the mid-90s, appearing in several small film and TV roles before landing the recurring role of Deputy Chief David Hale on "Sons of Anarchy." Prior to that he could be seen appearing in episodes of "Walker, Texas Ranger," "Veronica Mars," and "Star Trek: Enterprise," His acting background is part of the reason Sheridan cast himself as Travis Wheatley on "Yellowstone," though he also happened...

The CW’s Walker is a reboot of the popular 1990s television series Walker, Texas Ranger. The show debuted on The CW three years ago, featuring Jared Padalecki as the main protagonist.
The intriguing plot revolves around Cordell Walker, a man who left home for two years to work in Texas’ most dangerous crime unit before returning home. Adjusting to family life after two years away, Walker has to bond with his two kids and deal with the rampant crime around his own hometown.

Walker’s success can be attributed to its traditional use of action and modern and socially aware narratives. The show created significant buzz among viewers and critics when it came out.

Since his first appearance in an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger, Taylor Sheridan has proved there’s not much he can’t do in the world of TV. Best known for being a writer, producer and director of some of TV’s biggest shows, including Yellowstone, Lioness and Landman, Sheridan made his start as a TV actor in several hit shows of the late 90s and early 2000s.
One such show was Veronica Mars, the CW teen drama about a high school detective. While not his first credited role, Sheridan played his first recurring role as criminal Danny Boyd. Later taking on bigger TV roles, including David Hale in Sons of Anarchy, Sheridan’s role as Boyd was a turning point in his early career.
Veronica Mars Was a Teen Mystery That Mixed High School Drama With Noir
First aired in 2004, Veronica Mars quickly set itself apart from other teen dramas of the era.

Michael Preece, the script supervisor turned director who called the shots on multiple episodes of series including Hunter, Dallas and Walker, Texas Ranger, died Thursday. He was 88.
Preece died of heart failure at his Brentwood home in Los Angeles, his daughter, Gretchen Preece-Newman — wife of two-time Oscar-winning singer-songwriter Randy Newman — told The Hollywood Reporter.
Preece directed 19 episodes of NBC’s Hunter from 1984-90 during the show’s first six seasons; 62 installments of CBS’ Dallas from 1981-91 (seasons four through 14), plus the 1997 reunion telefilm War of the Ewings; and 70 episodes of CBS’ Walker, Texas Ranger during its nine-season, 1993-2001 run.
Preece also worked on The Bionic Woman, Barnaby Jones, Fantasy Island, Flamingo Road, T.J. Hooker, The New Mike Hammer, Riptide, Knots Landing, Falcon Crest, MacGyver, 7th Heaven and many other series before calling it a career in 2007.

Before he was writing half the shows on Paramount+, Taylor Sheridan was an actor. The man behind shows like "Yellowstone" and "Tulsa King" and the scripts for films including "Sicario" and "Hell or High Water" cut his teeth with screen work, a pastime he occasionally returns to when he needs someone to play, say, a cool cowboy who's dating Bella Hadid.
Years before he became known as a Hollywood cowboy, I knew Sheridan as a mysterious man named Danny Boyd in the plucky teen detective show "Veronica Mars," and as the hate-worthy cop Deputy David Hale on FX's "Sons of Anarchy." Those may have been two of Sheridan's most high-profile TV roles, but they're far from his only acting credits. He's had bit parts going all the way back to "Walker, Texas Ranger" in 1995, and can be seen in one-off roles in shows like "CSI," "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,...

Legend has it that instead of a chin beneath Chuck Norris' beard, he's hiding a third foot waiting to hit you with a surprise roundhouse kick. Some of his older films prove that one false, but it might be true that when Norris does a push-up, it's the Earth that moves, not him. Who's to say, really? The point is that Norris went from real martial artist to actor, dominating big screens through the 1980s and the small screen throughout the '90s. Love him or hate him, he's an American original.
He might not have gotten films with the kind of big budgets afforded his peers, and he might not be on too many lists of best action stars, but his movies deliver exactly what they set out to -- Norris smacking the living daylights out of bad dudes. It’s safe to say that Fire Country gave viewers quite the buildup before the winter break. Now that I am all caught up, I can genuinely say that I love this series despite a handful of truly infuriating characters.
Is it me, or does every character’s motivation seem to change in every episode?
It’s so back-and-forth that it’s hard to remember where everyone stands on issues like fire safety protocol.
(Eric Milner/CBS)
Bode gets a bad rep for following his own rules on Fire Country, but so many other characters are guilty of the same thing. The only difference is that no one else is the “Hometown Hero.”
I have to give Fire Country Season 3 credit for introducing new and rational characters, even if they aren’t permanent fixtures on the show.
Though His Time Was Brief, Jared Padalecki Left a Lasting Impression on Fire Country...

Taylor Sheridan is widely recognized today as the creator of Yellowstone and a leading figure in the Western crime thriller genre, but before he built his own empire through screenwriting and directing, he began his journey in Hollywood as an actor.

The filmmaker got his start in show business after starring in 1995’s Walker, Texas Ranger, and appearing in small films and in recurring roles on television. Some of his most notable works included Veronica Mars and FX’s Sons of Anarchy.
Taylor Sheridan reveals why he moved from acting to writing his own projects
Many fans praise Taylor Sheridan for his exceptional storytelling which usually relies on simple and raw narratives with minimal cinematic embellishment. His passion for the craft exudes in the projects he creates, and moving from acting to writing is perhaps the best decision he has ever made for his career.

Ever since Taylor Sheridan's 2015 hit Sicario debuted, he quickly became a critically revered multi-hyphenate in Hollywood. Award-winning films like Hell or High Water and his Yellowstone television empire soon followed, establishing the Texas native in the industry as a character-focused storyteller, notably ridding himself of writer's room constraints and breaking traditional, plot-driven rules. As his work garners continued praise, fans have turned their attention to his rise to fame. Before discovering his behind-the-scenes talent, Sheridan began his film career as an actor.
Despite becoming a Western staple of modern film and TV, his first claim to fame was FX's outlaw, biker-gang drama Sons of Anarchy. Created and directed by Kurt Sutter, the show follows lead Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) as he navigates the titular club (often referred to by the acronym Samcro) after his father's death. Although Samcro protects its Californian hometown from various threats, it also runs an illegal arms business.

Taylor Sheridan is a miniature industry unto himself. He wrote the Oscar hopefuls "Sicario," "Hell or High Water," and "Wind River," as well as the thrillers "Without Remorse" and "Those Who Wish Me Dead." On TV, Sheridan has been blasting barn doors off with "Yellowstone" and its multiple spinoffs, as well as shows like "Tulsa King," "Lioness," and "Landman." These are in addition to a modest acting career that put Sheridan on TV shows like "Walker, Texas Ranger," "Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman," "Party of Five," "NYPD Blue," "Sons of Anarchy," and even "Star Trek: Enterprise." He also plays the supporting character of Travis Wheatley on "Yellowstone" and Charles on the prequel series "1883."
Sheridan has evolved into the modern torch-bearer for Western machismo, and he is often drawn into the dark hearts of manly men. He also seems to love crime stories, tales of criminals/lawmen, and conflicts that end with gunplay.

Today, he's known as the mastermind behind the epic Yellowstone franchise and is a highly respected screenwriter and director with a range of prestigious accolades to his name. However, long before he ever garnered the kind of recognition he does now, for many years, Taylor Sheridan worked as a fairly unknown actor as he gradually made a name for himself in Hollywood. Small roles in shows like Walker Texas Ranger and even an appearance in Star Trek: Enterprise were the kind of gigs that decorated his acting credits between the late '90s and early '00s.
It seems almost sacrilegious now that, for so many years, ordinary viewers had no idea what an immensely talented writer and director Sheridan actually was.

Long before Denzel Washington played the quietly lethal Robert McCall in the "Equalizer" movies, Edward Woodward portrayed the character on the original CBS TV series. "The Equalizer" aired on the network from 1985 to 1989 and starred Woodward as the retired intelligence agent who uses his skills to help bring justice to those who have been wronged in their day to day lives.
It's a remarkably durable formula that has not only birthed three Denzel-led movies (with fourth and fifth "Equalizer" movies already confirmed), but also a reboot series that stars Queen Latifah and which has run for five full seasons already. Each iteration of this franchise has brought something new to the table, but none of them could have existed without the original series from co-creators Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim.

When Lindsey Morgan announced she was leaving the hit CW show Walker after Season 2, many were understandably caught out of the blue. The show, a modern reboot of the beloved 1990s series Walker, Texas Ranger, had already captured a loyal audience with its take on crime, justice, and personal redemption.

There's just something about a procedural cop drama that just seems to work well on network television. From "NYPD Blue" to "The Rookie" and everything in between, there's a massive audience for such things. That's why The CW looked to reboot "Walker, Texas Ranger" several years back. The original show starred legendary actor and action hero Chuck Norris as the title character. For the reboot, the network turned to "Supernatural" star Jared Padalecki in what would simply be titled "Walker."
Unfortunately for viewers, "Walker" season 4, which finished its run in 2024, was the end of the line for the show. The spin-off "Walker: Independence" is also at the end of its run after just a single season. There will be no fifth season of adventures for Cordell Walker, with Padalecki left to figure out what he'd like to do with his career next.

In the "Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "Chosen Realm", the Enterprise rescues a group of Triannons whose ship was damaged by a spatial anomaly. The captain of the Triannons, a man named Pri'Nam D'Jamat (Conor O'Farrell), explains that he leads a religious sect self-tasked with the exploration of multiple mysterious mechanical spheres that are scattered throughout this part of the galaxy. Chuck Norris only came to star in his best movies after Clint Eastwood passed on both. The Way of the Dragon's Bruce Lee vs Chuck Norris battle brought the latter to the attention of action fans, and Norris became part of a wave of martial artists who came to dominate the genre during the 1970s and 1980s, alongside the likes of Jean-Claude Van Damme. While the Missing in Action trilogy and Walker, Texas Ranger are his most famous projects, 1985's Code of Silence is arguably Chuck's best movie.

We’re inching closer to the highly anticipated return of one of CBS’s top shows, and things are getting hotter than ever.
Jared Padalecki joining Fire Country has us geeking out because why wouldn’t we love a Thieriot-Padalecki bromance on our favorite surviving firefighter series? His character, Camden, will appear in three episodes of the third season with a significant purpose.
Many fans are wary of the staff addition, given that it’s a set-up for a third “Country” series, which is currently in the planning stage.

Fire Country struggled through its second season, so news of slate of spinoffs isn’t as exciting as it should be.
What’s going to happen when that universe divides into new entities?
Despite our reservations about the spinoff news, most of us are loving the dreamy possibilities of Padalecki and Thieriot as sweaty, filthy firefighter buddies.

Jared Padalecki's future looks bright post-Walker cancelation, with a promising role in Fire Country season 3. Fire Country could be a career game-changer for Padalecki, offering more exposure on a major network like CBS. Walker's cancelation was part of a larger network restructuring, but Padalecki's upcoming projects show potential.
I feel better about Walker's cancelation after four seasons in light of this exciting Jared Padalecki update. The actor is perhaps best known for playing Sam Winchester alongside Jensen Ackles' Dean Winchester in The CW's Supernatural series. For the four years since Supernatural ended in 2020, Padalecki has starred as the titular Walker cast member, Cordell Walker, in the reboot of the 1990s Western drama series. It was an excellent series for the actor, and he disagreed with the network's decision not to revive the Walker, Texas Ranger reboot for season 5.
After Walker's cancelation ahead of season 5, I wondered about Paladecki's fate.

In the mid-aughts, Chuck Norris was having a moment. Following the conclusion of his melodramatic cop western Walker, Texas Ranger in 2001, Norris did pretty much the same kinds of stuff he’d been doing for the previous three decades — starring in low-budget action movies with lots of martial arts.
But then, Norris became one of the very first internet memes, in large part thanks to Conan O’Brien and his writing staff. That’s because, in May 2005, Conan introduced the Walker, Texas Ranger lever on Late Night, a bit that featured O’Brien pulling on a lever that would play an out-of-context clip from Norris’ CBS series. Once that gag had run its course a few years later, two veteran Conan writers developed a TV show that began as a loose parody of Walker, Texas Ranger. They even got genuine comedy royalty, Chris Elliott, to star in it, along with then up-and-comer Brett Gelman.

The recent cancellation of The CW’s popular reboot “Walker” has left fans with more questions than answers, particularly regarding the surprise appearance of James Van Der Beek in the season four finale. In a revealing interview with TVLine, showrunner Anne Fricke has now shed light on what could have been a compelling storyline for the show’s fifth season.
Van Der Beek, introduced in the final episode as Walker’s new neighbor, was set to take on the role of a “kooky” cult leader in the upcoming season. This unexpected turn for the “Dawson’s Creek” alum would have showcased a different side of his acting range, blending comedy with a touch of villainy.
“We were going to do the cult next door,” Fricke explained. “He was going to be a really whimsical, amusing character. We were not going to do blood cult, bad, bad, bad cult. We were going to do like kooky cult.

James Van Der Beek's character was planned as a cult leader in Walker season 5. The show had enough plotlines for an additional season, but budget issues led to cancellation. Walker season 4 had fewer episodes due to the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Walker showrunner Anne Fricke reveals the plans for James Van Der Beek's villain in the now-cancelled season 5. A reboot of the famous '90s western drama series Walker, Texas Ranger, this CW crime drama centers around the titular character, Cordell Walker, a legendary Texas Ranger who must wrangle the criminals of his hometown of Austin after spending two years away on undercover duty. After four relatively successful seasons, which garnered substantial viewership, The CW announced that Walker season 5 would not be moving forward.
Now, speaking with TVLine, Fricke shares details of what would have come from Van Der Beek's character, who made a cameo in the Walker season 4 finale.

Chuck Norris is a martial artist, actor and cultural icon known for his tough-guy persona. Born Carlos Ray Norris in 1940, in Oklahoma, he first gained fame by winning numerous championships before transitioning to a successful career in film and television. Norris is widely known for his role in the television series Walker, Texas Ranger, which aired from 1993 to 2000. But his appearances in a series of action films during the 1970s and 1980s cemented his stardom. His stoic demeanor and martial arts skills made him a beloved figure in action cinema and a subject of countless internet memes celebrating his exaggerated style of acting.
The 1983 movie Lone Wolf McQuade stands as one of Chuck Norris's quintessential films, encapsulating the rugged individualism and relentless determination that define his screen persona. The Missing in Action series then begins with the first film in 1984, further cementing Chuck Norris's reputation as a symbol of American heroism.

Jared Padalecki criticizes Nexstar Media Group's "cheap content strategy" after CW's cancelation of Walker. Padalecki expresses disappointment in the network's shift to cheaper, less engaging content. Walker's success under Nexstar's ownership was overshadowed by the network's focus on cost-efficient programming.
Jared Padalecki isn't ending his nearly 25-year run with The CW without a few parting shots at the network following the cancelation of his series Walker after four seasons. The actor seemed to be right at home with The CW after starring in three shows on the network, even when it used to be The WB, but that all ended during his last year when the network was scooped up by new owners Nexstar Media Group. Several signature shows were canceled on the network following the Nexstar acquisition, including Walker, and Padalecki is slamming their "cheap content strategy" employed by the new owners.

We often tend to associate certain celebrities with the shows they were on and the characters they played, no matter what else they do or how they try to branch out. But it’s far rarer to link a star to a network. But that’s kind of how it is with Jared Padalecki, who made a name for himself on The CW with shows like Supernatural and, most recently, Walker. But now, for Padalecki, CW might stand for “choice words.”
In a new interview with Variety in the wake of Walker – a reboot of Walker, Texas Ranger – being canceled just last month, Jared Padalecki called out the network for how it has shifted recently. “I feel like The CW that I was a part of last year is not The CW that I was a part of under [former chairman and CEO] Mark Pedowitz for that entire, almost 20-year stretch. Jared Padalecki reveals that Walker season 5 would've focused more on Violet and Kale's development as young adults, with James Van Der Beek as a suspicious newcomer. The series was cancelled after season 4, cutting short its planned storyline, which would have seen Walker blind to his new friends' possible criminal activity. If the show had continued, then its next season could have been one of its most interesting installments yet.
Walker star Jared Padalecki has revealed what the story of season 5 would have been had the series not been prematurely cancelled, teasing how things would have shaped up beyond its series finale.
