The fun thing about being a time traveler is that you can often procrastinate on important tasks for as long as you'd like. This was part of the appeal for Amy (Karen Gillan) at the start of "Doctor Who" season 5; she was having second thoughts about marrying Rory the next day, so the Doctor's promise that she could travel through space and time for as long as she wants beforehand seemed like a great deal.
The rest of the season eventually dealt with Amy's doubts about Rory, but it once again ended with the characters procrastinating. This time, it was the Doctor who took his sweet time getting around to an important task: in the finale, he receives a phone call (seemingly from the future queen or king of England) regarding an emergency situation. In the future there's apparently a train that runs in space called the Orient Express, and...

When you think of an Agatha Christie whodunnit, specific murder mysteries come to mind. Some stories begin as traditional cases but end with startling revelations, the kind that "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" executes all too well. Then there are the thrilling, challenging titles, like Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express," which presents a huge cast of suspects harboring grudges within a kinetic setting. Sometimes, Christie challenges the brilliance of her own heroic figures, such as when detective Hercule Poirot races against time to catch a serial killer in "The ABC Murders." While every whodunnit has a distinct flavor, Christie's strengths as a writer lie in hiding the truth in plain sight and pulling off concluding twists with conviction. One of the more overlooked Christie murder mysteries embodying these strengths best is 1934's "Why Didn't They Ask Evans?," which keeps readers guessing up until the big reveal.

A tangled web of jealousy, deceit and dysfunction drives the trailer for BritBox’s Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero detective drama, which dropped on Friday.
Angelica Huston stars as Lady Tressilian who hosts her favorite nephew, British tennis star Nevile Strange (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and his new wife Kay (Mimi Keene) and ex-wife Audrey (Ella Lily Hyland) in an aristocratic estate.
“You’ll not make a mockery of marriage under my roof,” Lady Tressilian warns Strange and his new wife as their nasty love triangle threatens to upend her summer house party. Of course being an Agatha Christie yarn set in England 1936, that disreputable unfinished business between the former sweethearts is followed by a violent death.
And that has Inspector Leach, played by Matthew Rhys, soon on the scene to ferret out a murderer from a colorful collection of suspects: a long-suffering lady’s companion, a mysterious gentleman’s valet, an exiled cousin with a grudge,...

Agatha Christie is the second best-selling author of all time, behind only William Shakespeare. Upon reading just one of her books, it's easy to see why her mysteries have continued entertaining audiences long after her death. She crafted compelling twists and engaging protagonists, with Hercule Poirot being her most brilliant creation, but she also wrote adventures starring Miss Marple and Parker Pyne in case anyone wanted a break for Hercule every now and then.
Christie's novels have been adapted many times over into movies, stage plays, and television shows, and she's inspired generations of mystery writers. Writer/director Rian Johnson even said he looked toward Christie for inspiration when figuring out how to take "Glass Onion" in a new direction after "Knives Out." It's easy to see why, as she was prone to playing with genres. Though her books may have largely been mysteries, there were also elements of comedy...

The Generation 14plus 2025 competition will open with Christy, directed by Brendan Canty. The film portrays a teenage boy from Cork, Ireland, navigating the shadows of his family’s past while seeking a place in the world. In the Generation Kplus section, the opening film The Nature of Invisible Things explores a community’s support for two girls as they grapple with moments of farewell and new beginnings.
The competition lineup features Seaside Serendipity by Satoko Yokohama, an episodic film set on a nameless Japanese island, which blends magical realism with everyday life, questioning the intersection of art and life. Also highlighted is Wrong Husband by Zacharias Kunuk, which transports viewers to a mystical world in the Canadian Arctic, where human and spirit realms collide in a fairy tale about young love.

There have been plenty of great Agatha Christie movies over the years, but the author's influence on cinema extends beyond adaptations of her own books. Many mystery thrillers have been inspired by Christie's style over the years. Some of these movies are fairly straightforward with their allusions to Christie, from their settings to their eccentric detectives, but others are more subtle.
Agatha Christie is one of the most popular authors of all time, so it's no surprise that she has reshaped the mystery genre in both literature and cinema. Her whodunnit mysteries often seem like they work from a simple formula, but a cast of enigmatic suspects, a charming sleuth and a memorable puzzle don't necessarily mean that a movie will be as intriguing as Christie. Filmmakers still need their own unique ideas to put a spin on the genre.

Sean Connery and Michael Caine co-starred in A Bridge Too Far, a massively underrated war epic that received mixed reviews from critics on its initial release, but deserves a lot more love. Connery is best known for playing James Bond in six official movies (and one unofficial one), but he was a screen legend outside his connection to the role of 007. He starred in a wide range of movies, from the psychological thriller Marnie to the Agatha Christie whodunit Murder on the Orient Express. He worked with such legendary directors as Alfred Hitchcock, Sidney Lumet, and John Huston.
These days, Caine is perhaps best known for his collaborations with Christopher Nolan, having played Alfred Pennyworth in The Dark Knight trilogy and Professor John Brand in Interstellar. Caine played his own iconic spy character, Harry Palmer, across five movies, and starred in such classics as Get Carter, The Italian Job, and Hannah and Her Sisters,...

British crime dramas, comedies, mysteries and procedurals are becoming more and more popular. And platforms like Britbox make these series more accessible to people from all around the world. Britbox has some of the best and most popular British TV shows, from Sherlock to Line of Duty. There are also some underrated cult classics available on Britbox, like The It Crowd, which almost had an American remake.
British TV series are popular because of their character-driven narrative and limited episodes, which gives the storylines enough time to develop without including too many filler episodes. Many British TV series are also based on books by popular authors like Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Peter James. And while there are many great TV series on Britbox, the best shows will captivate audiences from start to finish.

It's always an intriguing start when a film project launches from the minds of a real-life couple. Magpie credits Tom Bateman as its writer, but his wife Daisy Ridley helped him conceive the idea from the get-go, as we recently learned. MovieWeb spoke with Ridley amid the release of their gripping neo-noir and opened up about their hands-on collaborative process through bringing the film to life on the page, including a wildly surprising twist in the third act (no spoilers).
"Because I was so part of it all, I was really seeing it sort of come together in real time, and I knew what Tom was writing was great, and I knew if we particularly got great people, we would really care about these characters and be invested enough to think, 'What the f*** is going on, and where is it going?'" Ridley told us about creating her new film.

Agatha Christie movies have been in demand since the advent of Hollywood cinema. She published over 125 written works, including 74 novels, selling more than two billion copies, making her the second best-selling fiction author ever. The first Agatha Christie movie came in 1928 with the first non-English language adaptation coming a year later. Foreign filmmakers have taken a particular liking to Christie's work. Of more than 30 film adaptations, 14 are non-English adaptations.
Even today, Christie's mystery novels remain popular among readers worldwide. They are still being adapted into television series and movies, whether they're stand-alone stories or part of the mysteries solved by Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. While miniseries and special presentations on television tend to be more common than movies, new Agatha Christie movies also continue to be released. However, the best Agatha Christie movies appeal to fans of the novels as much as they do those who have never read her works.

Author Agatha Christie passed away nearly fifty years ago, but her stories are still alive in a major way. A year rarely goes by without some sort of Christie adaptation making its way out into the world, with recent examples including the Kenneth Branagh films Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, and A Haunting in Venice, the BBC series Murder Is Easy, and the upcoming three-part limited series Towards Zero. Another Christie adaptation that’s in the works is the Netflix series The Seven Dials Mystery, which is set to star Mia McKenna-Bruce (How to Have Sex), Helena Bonham Carter (Fight Club), and Martin Freeman (Black Panther).
The Crown executive producer Suzanne Mackie started her company Orchid Pictures under a deal with Netflix in 2020, and The Seven Dials Mystery is the first Orchid series to be announced. The show is being written by Broadchurch creator and former Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall,...

The BBC and BritBox International have secured A-list talent for their latest Agatha Christie adaptation.
Oscar-winner Anjelica Huston has been cast in Towards Zero, potentially the highest-profile actor to appear in a BBC Christie series since John Malkovich played Poirot in 2018’s The ABC Murders.
Huston will play the aunt of lead character Nevile Strange (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). After a scandalous celebrity divorce, the British tennis star and his ex-wife Audrey (Ella Lily Hyland) make the unthinkable decision to spend a summer together at Gull’s Point, their childhood home and the coastal estate of Nevile’s aunt, Lady Tressilian (Huston).
Revealed by Deadline several months back, the series will star Jackie Clune (Motherland), Grace Doherty (Call the Midwife), Jack Farthing (Rain Dogs), Khalil Gharbia (Mary & George), Adam Hugill (Sherwood), Mimi Keene (Sex Education), Clarke Peters (The Wire), Emmy winner Matthew Rhys (The Americans) and Oliver Award-winner Anjana Vasan (Black Mirror:...

Doctor Who's titular Doctor has met countless historical figures throughout their travels. Gallivanting with icons like William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and Vincent van Gogh is essential to the series’ capriciously wish-fulfillment approach to time travel, and its origins as a children's educational program. A gleefully clever take on this recurring concept occurs in Season 4's "The Unicorn and the Wasp," spotlighting none other than Dame Agatha Christie (before she was a Dame). Still as relevant a draw as ever (as the BritBox series Agatha Christie's Murder is Easy indicates), "The Unicorn and the Wasp" functions as a love letter to Christie and posits an “explanation” for the real-life mystery surrounding her infamous 10-day disappearance. Duh! It was aliens! But it's aliens filtered through Christie's wily wit as the world's best-selling author solves a murder alongside the Doctor (David Tennant) and his bestie Donna Noble (Catherine Tate).

Netflix taps former Doctor Who showrunner, Chris Chibnall, for a new Agatha Christie adaptation. The Seven Dials Mystery features the lesser-known Christie character, Lady "Bundle" Brent. Despite initial criticism, Brent's rebellious traits could make for a fascinating character in the show.
Netflix has announced their new Agatha Christie adaptation, The Seven Dials Mystery, will be penned by former Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall. Previously serving as the head writer for the 2005 spinoff Torchwood, Chibnall was later tapped to succeed Steven Moffat as the showrunner for Doctor Who season 11. Responsible for casting Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor in the show’s long-running history, Chibnall’s tenure as showrunner generated some degree of controversy, with several commentators accusing the writer’s episodes of being too politically motivated.

When Star Trek returned to television screens after two decades in 1987, it looked very different from its predecessor. Gone were James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Bones, most of whom planned to return in the original sequel series Star Trek: Phase II. In their place stood a bald Shakespearean actor, the breakout star of the television miniseries Roots, and a member of Muppet creator Jim Henson’s team.
From those unlikely beginnings, Star Trek: The Next Generation grew to match and, for some, exceed the original series. Much of that success came from the cast, who had a far easier camaraderie than their predecessors and, some might argue, a more impressive resume. Before and after Trek, these actors became beloved figures in genre cinema and television, proving that they are even more than the crew who boldly went where no one had gone before.

Knives Out's success shows that audiences crave original stories, which the recent Poirot franchise lacks. The modern setting of Knives Out makes it more relatable and engaging for audiences compared to the dated time period of the Poirot movies. Kenneth Branagh's Poirot movies feel unoriginal and less interesting compared to Knives Out, which incorporates fresh twists and varied tropes to keep audiences engaged.
Knives Out is one of the most successful, recent movie franchises, and its take on the "whodunit" genre is beating the establishing Hercule Poirot IP in terms of pop culture impact. A Haunting in Venice's box office has now surpassed $100 million, but the film has fallen short of the previous two entries in the franchise. The new sequel is on track to be the lowest-earner of the three Hercule Poirot movies, casting doubt on the Agatha Christie franchise's future. Despite receiving positive reviews, the shift in tone to horror may have alienated the older demographic that enjoyed the previous movies.
A new update for A Haunting in Venice's box office is here, and it could spell bad news regarding whether there will be more movies in the Hercule Poirot franchise. Director and star Kenneth Branagh returns as brilliant detective Poirot for A Haunting in Venice, the third movie in the franchise following Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. The film is based on Agatha Christie's Hallowe'en Party, with Poirot attempting to solve multiple murders while attending a séance in Venice.

Agatha Christie - Murder on the Orient Express is a modernized telling of the classic mystery, incorporating new elements into one of the writer's most famous stories. This upcoming release aims to surprise even the most seasoned mystery fans, adding fresh ways to experience the well-trodden tale.

Kenneth Branagh returns as Hercule Poirot in a radical departure from his two previous Agatha Christie adaptations. A Haunting in Venice is a terrifying murder mystery set in a creepy -World War II palazzo. The famed Belgian sleuth is invited to a séance by crime novelist Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey). She wants him to prove that spiritual medium Joyce Reynolds (Michelle Yeah) is a fraud. Opera star Rowena Drake (Kelly Reilly) is desperate to communicate with her daughter (Rowan Robinson) who committed suicide. The night takes a seemingly supernatural turn as murders ensue with no obvious explanations.
Oscar-winning Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir will send shivers down your spine with her magnificent score. Branagh "was very clear that he wanted the film to be very different from the other two films.

After the release of Murder on the Orient Express, Kenneth Branagh expanded on his Agatha Christie cinematic universe with two more films. The latest film in this universe is A Haunting in Venice, which adapts Agatha Christie's Hallowe'en Party. Kenneth Branagh brings to life the iconic Belgian detective Hercule Poirot in all three movies. Poirot is a classic detective in fiction and has featured in over thirty Agatha Christie novels.
With so many detective novels featuring Hercule Poirot, Kenneth Branagh has many to choose from. A Haunting in Venice also introduced another recurring character in Agatha Christie's novels, Ariadne Oliver. And while Poirot and Oliver have many stories together that Kenneth Branagh could adapt next, there are other Christie novels that would be perfect for the big screen as well.

The Nun II and A Haunting in Venice are in a tight battle to win the weekend box office. A Haunting in Venice is a murder mystery story based on a classic Agatha Christie book. The movie happens to be a sequel to 2022's Death on the Nile. The Nun II is also a sequel but strikes a very different audience, as it is a horror story revolving around the idea of haunted nuns. It serves as the ninth movie in The Conjuring's universe.

Agatha Christie was the master of the perfectly constructed mystery; Oscar winner Hildur Guðnadóttir is an avant-garde cellist-composer. Yet the two meet to spine-tingling results for Kenneth Branagh’s third Hercule Poirot mystery, “A Haunting in Venice,” a loose adaptation of Christie’s “Hallowe’en Party.”
As it turns out, there’s a very good reason why Guðnadóttir might find pleasure in Christie’s work. “My grandmother, who was one of the first women doctors in Iceland and a brilliant virologist, always said that the only way to get a tiny break from your mind is to read a good detective novel or crime story,” Guðnadóttir told IndieWire.
“So, since I was very young, I have lived by this advice,” Guðnadóttir said. “And I have always wanted to sink my teeth into an Agatha Christie adaptation. When Ken approached me about this one, he was really clear from the get-go...

Kenneth Branagh’s second Agatha Christie film Death on the Nile, did not have a smooth ride. Its release was delayed several times due to first Disney buying the studio that made the film, 20th Century Fox, and then the Covid pandemic, and its cast turned out to be a Pandora’s Box of, at best, bad PR and at worst, criminal allegations.
Back in 2020 then, when Branagh was filming his autobiographically inspired family drama, Belfast, a third Hercule Poirot film wasn’t necessarily a given. Though Agatha Christie’s estate and Branagh were keen to make further sequels to 2017 hit Murder on the Orient Express, the next Christie movie had yet to be greenlit.
That uncertainty inspired Branagh to tuck a Poirot Easter Egg into Belfast as “an offering to the gods,” as he told The Hollywood Reporter. “They can tell us, in the end, if we’ll be allowed to make it.
