First published by Mojang Studios in 2011, "Minecraft" is the best selling video game of all time, one that can be enjoyed on different levels by gamers of all ages. So the only outwardly weird thing about Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures knocking out a film adaptation of the game is that it took 13 years for them to get around to it.

Does it matter that "Minecraft" isn't a narratively complex game like, say, "Resident Evil" or "Assassin's Creed?" Not at all! There have been two movies based on "Super Mario Bros.," which boasts a pretty perfunctory storyline, while fighting games like "Street Fighter" and "Mortal Kombat," where the characters do little more than beat the snot out of each other, have been grist for films as well. All that matters is the massive popularity of the brand, and, in the case of "Minecraft," the understanding that parents have a high tolerance for low-aiming kids movies.

The reaction from fans to the casting of Jack Black as major Minecraft player, Steve, have been somewhat mixed (even more so since the School of Rock star tragically turned his back on fellow Tenacious D member and long-time friend Kyle Gass recently), with many left wondering if he would have been better suited as a different character. Well, that was indeed almost the case, as A Minecraft Movie initially had Black playing a “talking pig.”

Discussing the upcoming video game adaptation with Variety, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Mojang’s senior director of original content, revealed more details about how Jack Black ended up playing Steve, one of the original “skins” introduced when the game first emerged. Director Jared Hess, who had worked with Black before on the 2006 comedy Nacho Libre, was eager to reunite with the actor, and while his casting as Steve has been divisive among fans (he looks.

Mikey Madison, Jack Black and Jon Hamm will be the next hosts of “Saturday Night Live,” with Morgan Wallen; Elton John and Brandi Carlile; and Lizzo serving as musical guests.

March 29 will mark Madison’s “SNL,” debut fresh off her “Anora” best actress win at the Oscars. Jesse Eisenberg’s latest Sasquatch Sunset audience looked a little different than your typical film screening. The actor-producer took his movie back to the source material this week, showing it to a group of bonobos at Ape Initiative in Des Moines, Iowa.

Danielle Brooks is teasing the upcoming season of Peacemaker and her new film Minecraft.

The Color Purple star talked to Deadline on the red carpet of the Critics Choice Awards, where she talked about her upcoming projects.

“It’s happening,” Brooks told us. “That’s all I know. It’s happening. When? Not quite sure.”

She continued, “I think this year, hopefully, we’ll get started.”

Another project that Brooks is a part of is Minecraft, a live-action take on the computer game where she will play the role of Dawn.

About a decade ago, Netflix was sitting pretty, pulling in growing numbers of viewers with TV shows they had licensed from other networks. Some might remember how, in 2013, NBCUniversal licensed the streaming rights for "The Office" to Netflix, allowing it to become a frequently re-watched series for the streaming service. 2013 was when, some might say, early rumblings of what was to become the Streaming Wars began. Los Angeles, April 10 (Ians) Actor Jack Black has some ideas for ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ sequel and he is suggesting Pedro Pascal get cast as Wario.

Black voices Bowser in the animated movie and although he is not sure if his character would return for a potential follow-up film, he would want ‘The Mandalorian’ star to voice Mario’s arch-rival, reports ‘Deadline’.

“It’s not a given that Bowser will return. You know, I did a few ‘Kung Fu Panda’ movies, and it was a different villain every movie. They may do the same thing,” Black told Game Spot.

“You know, what if there is a more powerful, more evil villain? Then I may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Wario. Pedro Pascal is Wario.”

A Minecraft movie starring Jason Momoa has a release date set by Warner Bros. The film will be directed by Jared Hess, best known for his work on comedy films like Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. Momoa was cast in Minecraft in 2022, with no word yet on what role he is expected to play in the video game adaptation.

Now, Deadline reports that Momoa's Minecraft movie has been scheduled for release on April 4, 2025. The date had previously been reserved by Warner Bros. for an untitled film, with the recent revelation now confirming that the film is their Minecraft adaptation. The announcement was accompanied by news that Momoa's other starring role in Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom would come to theaters earlier than expected, on December 20, 2023.

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.

This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.

The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

Jon Heder turned down the opportunity to do a Napoleon Dynamite sequel. Heder is most known for his role as the titular Napoleon Dynamite in the 2004 smash comedy. Although the film was made with an extremely small budget (Heder reportedly only made 1000 for his starring role), it was a box office hit– earning over 40 million. The film was co-written by Jerusha and Jared Hess, and directed by Jared Hess, and has become one of the most iconic comedies from the early 2000s.

In an interview with Michael Rosenbaum on his podcast Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, Heder said a sequel was in talks at some point, but he turned down the opportunity. According to the actor, Fox Searchlight Pictures was trying to adapt a sequel despite the disinterest of the original director Jared Hess. Heder didn’t want to continue the project without Hess– so the project never happened.

In another universe, the memorable theme of "Mad Men" was an indie rock ballad. The suspenseful string composition by DJ RJD2 was actually not the series creator's first choice for the show's intro. Actor Jack Black, who is enjoying a decades-long career in Hollywood starring in hits such as ‘School of Rock’ and ‘Nacho Libre’, has said when he first started out he thought he was “horrible” until he saw the final cut in cinemas.

“I remember the first movie I ever did. I saw a rough cut, and I was like, “Oh, my god, I’m a bad actor. I’m horrible,” he said, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“And then, the editor just did some magic, and by the end, when it was released in theatres, I was like, “Oh, my god, I’m fantastic. I’m fantastic at acting!'”

The ‘Kung Fu Panda’ star went on to explain that it was all “magic” done in post-production and claimed that editors don’t get the credit they deserve.

He told Collider, “The editor trims away all the fat, which is a crucial job.

In true Jack Black fashion, the veteran comedic actor somersaulted his way onstage in a panda suit — seemingly in a tribute to his iconic “Kung Fu Panda” character Po — to accept the MTV Movie & TV Awards’ Comedic Genius Award.
