At the 2025 Academy Awards, Demi Moore was nominated for the Best Actress award for her work in Coralie Fargeat's feminist body horror masterpiece The Substance. Although Moore didn't win, she is still a sentimental favorite as a veteran performer with a storied career. She made a big splash after years of smaller roles and personal projects. Her brilliant performance carries more than a little autobiography to it by playing an aging celebrity who turns to a terrifying method of rejuvenation to prolong her career.
Horror movies are rarely Oscar darlings, often viewed as too base and puerile for the Academy elites. Still, every now and again, a particularly strong performance in a particularly good horror movie will win them over. While Moore not winning the Academy Award for Best Actress is one of Hollywood's biggest missed opportunities to recognize the horror genre as something more than silly, it's still...

The science fiction genre in cinema is roughly one hundred and twenty-five years old, with Georges Méliès' A Trip to the Moon frequently cited as the film industry's first major work within the genre. While the silent era produced many influential science fiction movies, such as Metropolis, The Lost World, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, for most of the twentieth century, science fiction movies were predominantly B movies.
That all changed in 1977 when Star Wars lit the box office on fire. Ever since, science fiction has remained arguably the most profitable genre at the box office. Currently, 14 of the 25 highest-grossing movies of all time are science fiction movies. However, despite the immense popularity of the science fiction genre, many iconic sci-fi films continue to fly under the radar and have been forgotten by modern audiences. Each film included in this article has under 100,000 ratings on Letterboxd.

An Academy Award-nominated classic horror film will hit a major streaming platform next month. Starring the legendary Fredric March, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde debuted in 1931 to critical acclaim and was commercially successful.
Old and new audiences will now experience the 93-year-old masterpiece when Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde arrives on Max on Feb. 1. Directed by Rouben Mamoulian, the movie adapts the famous Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which tells the tale of a man who takes a potion that turns him from a mild-mannered man of science into a homicidal maniac.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde tweaks the classic source material into a grim portrayal of an abusive and controlling relationship, portraying Hyde as a monster through his destruction of a young woman. Alongside March, the film stars Miriam Hopkins as Ivy Pierson, Rose Hobart as Muriel Carew, Holmes Herbert as Dr.

DC Comics has explored its best heroes through a combination of formats and degrees of continuity, from legendary ongoing series to non-canon prestige graphic novels. Under the Elseworlds imprint, a long line of all-star creative teams have been able to go even further than regular stories, casting heroes into past and future settings, as well as blending them with classical literature. From Superman Frankenstein tales to twisted Batman Jekyll & Hyde mysteries, the imprint has no shortage of underrated stories.
The Elseworlds imprint delivered readers some of the company's best stories, with the likes of Kingdom Come still being iconic today. However, where everyone knows about these seminal stories, their success overshadowed some of the other great tales, from graphic novels to miniseries from the line. ‘Kneecap’, the name of the Irish hip hop group, and the music biopic about — and starring — the groundbreaking trio, opens today on 700+ screens, following up a U.S. tour last fall and leading into another one.
The hybrid documentary, which was a buzzy Sundance title when Sony Pictures Classics nabbed it, recently swept the Galway Film Fleadh and was named Ireland’s Oscar International Feature submission.
Written and directed by Rich Peppiatt, it features group members — Naoise Ó Cairealláin “Móglaí Bap”; Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh “Mo Chara”; and JJ Ó Dochartaigh “Dj Provaí” as themselves, but it’s scripted, and actors, including Michael Fassbender, play their younger selves and family members. With Josie Walker, Fionnuala Flaherty, Jessica Reynolds, Adam Best and Simone Kirby.

We spoke with Doctor Jekyll director Joe Stephenson leading up to the release of his new British horror film that is reigniting the famed Hammer Films brand. Since 1934, the studio which wasn't initially involved in Stephenson's film but would later lend its hand has produced acclaimed projects that feature the iconic characters of Frankenstein, Dracula, and more. And now, Stephenson has helmed a modern reimagining of the famed 1886 novella about two other fictional icons: Jekyll & Hyde.
"I was always using references of British horror of the past and always structuring it as a slow-burn kind of energy heading towards a chaotic climax," Stephenson told MovieWeb about the development process. "That kind of was a bit of like, really what they did in the '60s and '70s. A lot of those films have that slow-burn beginning, just people wandering around saying that things look spooky, and then chaos.

For decades, Hammer Studios was synonymous with monsters. And heaving breasts. And blood. Their classics “Curse of Frankenstein” and “Horror of Dracula” helped yank iconic movie monsters out of their spooky old castles and into a violent, sensual cinematic era (which also had castles). There was nothing wrong with these iconic boogeymen. They just needed a bit of updating.
Hammer Studios closed its doors in 1979, but the icons persisted. Since the production company came back in the late 2000s, they’ve shied away from the classic creature pantheon, instead releasing what we can generously call a mixed-bag of paranormal potpourri. They’ve made at least one excellent film — Matt Reeves’ “Let Me In,” a surprisingly sturdy remake of Tomas Alfredson’s acclaimed “Let the Right One In” — followed by some respectable (and less-respectable) thrillers, and a smattering of haunted houses.
Now, finally, they have unleashed “Doctor Jekyll,” an old-fashioned monster...

Hammer Films returns to life with a new owner and a new slate of movies, and up first is the Eddie Izzard-starring Doctor Jekyll. While the new Hammer horror film debuted in UK cinemas last Halloween, it’s finally set to make its way stateside this summer.
Look for Doctor Jekyll in US theaters and VOD on August 2, 2024.
Director Joe Stephenson, of acclaimed drama “Chicken” and feature documentary “McKellen: Playing the Part,” developed the new adaptation of the classic tale from Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella with first time writer Dan Kelly-Mulhern.
Doctor Jekyll focuses on a reclusive Nina Jekyll finding friendship with her newly hired help, Rob, played by rising star Scott Chambers, who must work together to prevent Hyde from destroying her life.

“Always be two steps ahead,” repeatedly says Rachel Hyde, the famous alter ego of the namesake character in Hammer Studios’ “Doctor Jekyll.” The film’s director, Joe Stephenson, and his screenwriter Dan Kelly-Mulhern don’t take her advice, and it’s much to the detriment of their contemporary adaptation of the 1886 Robert Louis Stevenson novella, which can’t decide singularly what Jekyll’s transformation is a metaphor for. All volunteered options are either obvious or severely undercooked. Though Stephenson offers plenty of suitably spooky imagery, and importantly finds a more-than-game collaborator in Izzard as both the good and evil doctor, “Doctor Jekyll” is meandering and empty, an update with neither enough loyalty to its source material or imagination to make its departures meaningful.

Severin follows up their 2023 collection of Italian gothic titles with an essential second volume that brings together three films and a miniseries. Each work takes a very different approach to the gothic as both a visual aesthetic and a set of thematic preoccupations. The results range from virtually archetypal to resolutely revisionist. For this well-appointed set, Severin provides a veritable bounty of bonus materials: new restorations, alternate cuts, commentary tracks, cast and crew interviews, visual essays, even a soundtrack CD.
Antonio Margheriti’s Danza Macabra, from 1964, is one of the very best Italian gothic films. It simply oozes with atmosphere courtesy of Riccardo Pallottini’s moody monochrome cinematography, and, while the violence remains relatively restrained, Margheriti brazenly pushes the envelope when it comes to nudity and some suggestive sexual content. Henry Pettigrew and Lorn Macdonald in The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Photo: Courtesy of Eiff Hope Dickson Leach’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde premieres on Sky Arts at 9pm on October 30. It’s the final destination of the reimagining of the Robert Louis Stevenson that began as a hybrid theatre piece and then screened in cinemas. Her retelling, co-adapted with Vlad Butucea, offers a change from the usual sight of Dr Jekyll (Henry Pettigrew) growing fur and turning monstrous in his lab in favour of coming at the story more from Stevenson’s original perspective of lawyer Gabriel Utterson (Lorn Macdonald), who finds himself becoming increasingly morally compromised as the tale progresses. We can’t up with Dickson Leach to talk about creating the hybrid film with the National Theatre of Scotland and coming at it from a different angle after...

There’s an orgy scene which – in this very rock’n’roll way – we shot at 10am. It was a Steadicam shot, so everyone had to be acting all the time because you don’t know where the camera is looking. It was about a six-minute take where everyone was going for it in this big room. Then they go, “Cut!”, everyone stops, then someone says: “Ok, go for another take.” I was with the wonderful Emily Woof and just had to get very intimate, very quickly. You stop, mark time and go back into it.

Steven Moffat, former Doctor Who showrunner, avoided giving a definitive answer about his return to the show in a recent interview. Moffat praised current showrunner Russell T. Film studios don’t get much more iconic than Hammer Films, the production company that defined the horror genre in Britain throughout the 1950s, 1960s and beyond, releasing classics including Dracula, The Curse Of Frankenstein and The Mummy. Whilst the studio’s repertoire expands beyond just horror movies, its back catalogue of monsters and more are its signature, and have had a lasting impact on the genre to this day. Nearly 90 years after Hammer was founded, they’re moving into a new era with the release of Doctor Jekyll – a modern take on the classic double-identity story, starring comedy and screen legend Eddie Izzard in the titular role.
Izzard plays Nina Jekyll, an infamous doctor who takes on some hired help in the form of ex-convict Rob (Scott Chambers). Little does Rob know, he’s part of a sinister master plan concocted by Nina’s alter-ego, Rachel Hyde. Chaos and weirdness ensures,...

Since the publication of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in 1886 there have been over 120 adaptations of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella. The adaptations have changed and evolved to keep the story fresh; these include a Blaxploitation retelling, Dr Black and Mr Hyde, and Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, where the good Doctor transforms into a woman. The latest reimagining of this classic is arguably its most diverse, as Jekyll and Hyde are both transgender women.
Rob (Scott Chambers) has gone through a lot at such a young age. He’s had substance abuse issues, mental health problems and his new-born daughter is very sick in hospital. In order to try and get his life back on track and provide for his baby, he secures a job with Nina Jekyll (Eddie Izzard) - a controversial, brilliant and reclusive pharmaceutical pioneer - as a live-in carer. K-dramas often feature nonsensical and unintentionally funny storylines, but criticism comes from a place of love for the genre. In It's Okay to Not Be Okay, the plot twist of Moon-young's mother being alive raises questions about the feasibility of her obtaining a new identity and job. Plot holes in K-dramas like My Love From Another Star and Hyde, Jekyll, Me create inconsistencies in characters' actions and storylines.
Despite delivering compelling character arcs, some K-dramas feature plots that simply don't make any sense. International shows, especially ones from South Korea, have gained global popularity in recent years. Many streaming platforms, have picked up existing Korean shows and started making streamer-exclusive K-dramas, hence why Netflix has so many K-dramas. The ease of access opens this genre up to an entirely new audience.
However, K-dramas tend to require a larger suspension of disbelief in certain situations. Quite a few, including those that have been highly successful,...

Director Joe Stephenson’s Doctor Jekyll, “a modern interpretation” of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, wrapped production over a year ago, and while we continue to wait to hear when we’re going to have a chance to see the movie, Fangoria has unveiled a new image that shows gender fluid comedian/actor Eddie Izzard (The Lost Symbol) as Doctor Nina Jekyll. You can take a look at the image on the Fangoria website, or at the bottom of this article.
Stephenson developed Doctor Jekyll with first-time writer Dan Kelly-Mulhern during the UK lockdown. The story they crafted follows the reclusive Nina Jekyll finding friendship with her newly hired help, Rob. They must work together to prevent Hyde from destroying her life.

Eddie Izzard stars in the upcoming Doctor Jekyll from Hammer Studios, and our friends over at Fangoria have shared an exclusive first-look image with us this afternoon.
Director Joe Stephenson tells Fangoria, “There’ve been over 100 cinematic adaptations of Stevenson’s novella, but there has never been a trans Dr. Jekyll. There seem to be some assumptions that because Nina is a trans character, we are somehow going to make it about gender. That is not the case; the themes of our film are true to the original work.”
Check out your first look at Eddie Izzard in the new Doctor Jekyll movie below.

Renfield is the latest horror movie from Universal to feature Dracula, and there are several other classic monsters Nicolas Cage could play after chewing the scenery in the role. Cage lends support to Nicholas Hoult's Renfield, a hapless minion to the Prince of Darkness for almost a hundred years and desperate to get out from under the dark shadow of his demanding boss. While waiting for Dracula to return to his full powers following a near-fatal slaying, Renfield teams up with a local New Orleans police officer (Awkwafina) to destroy him once and for all and finally get the normal life he so desperately wants.
Hoult plays Renfield with a sputtering charm, but Cage truly makes a feast of The Count, gliding through each scene with predatory grace and charm. He strikes a fine balance between being charismatic and narcissistic; while it's easy to see why Renfield was mesmerized...

Anthony Perkins in Edge Of Sanity (1989) will be available on Special Edition Blu-ray June 21st from Arrow Video
Anthony Perkins builds upon his legendary status as cinema’s seminal psycho in Edge of Sanity, a delirious conflation of Robert Louis Stephenson’s classic horror novella ‘Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ and Jack the Ripper’s real-life reign of terror over Victorian London.
When his experiments into a powerful new anaesthetic go hideously awry, respected physician Dr Jekyll (Perkins) takes off into the night, casting aside the shackles of upper-class propriety as he disappears into the shadowy decadent demimonde of Whitechapel in pursuit of sensual pleasures under the guise of ‘Mr Hyde’. As his wife Elisabeth (Glynis Barber) passes her time in charitable work, rehabilitating the district’s fallen women, Hyde is drawn into an escalating cycle of lust and murder that seems to know no bounds.

In just her fourth American movie the Swedish import Ingrid Bergman proves herself the most sensual creature in Hollywood, running away with Spencer Tracy and Victor Fleming’s remake of Mamoulian’s pre-Code classic. The morals are cleaned up and the sex angle tamed down (except for Fröken Bergman) and the acting is less stylized — overall it’s a fine show. Ingrid learned quickly how things were done at MGM — she swiped the film’s plum role from Lana Turner.

Beryl Vertue, the renowned British television producer and founder of Hartswood Films, died on Saturday, her family has confirmed. She was 90.
No cause of death has been given but her daughters, Sue and Debbie Vertue, who worked with her at Hartswood Films, confirmed she died “peacefully” and surrounded by family.
“It’s with the heaviest of hearts that we have to share the sad news that mum/Beryl passed away peacefully last night,” her daughters and Hartswood Films co-producers Sue and Debbie said in a statement. “It wasn’t Covid, it was just her nearly 91-year-old body saying enough is enough.”
“We were there so the passing was as good as one could hope for. Nothing wrong with her brain – even earlier this week she was grilling us both about work. It’s really impossible to believe that she has gone though, because I know we’re not alone in...

I've worked remotely for more than 15 years, so the transition to pandemic life wasn't as jarring as it was for some, but even I wasn't mentally prepared for will likely be 2+ years of us being in lockdown. It's been a real struggle to watch anything that's super serious (I'm still waiting to see Relic!), and I've turned to some of my favorites as horror movie comfort food, including... The Monster Club!
Those who have listened to our Corpse Club podcast over the years know that this has been a favorite of mine for quite some time now. It's easily the movie I've watched the most in the last ten years and no other movie comes close, but it isn't nostalgia driving my interest in re-watching this. I didn't see the movie until maybe 10-15 years ago, but thanks to the Code Red Blu-ray release, it's been a regular watch ever since.

The Dark Universe, Universal’s would-be monster movie franchise, may have only fallen apart a scant four years ago with 2017’s The Mummy, but the mindset behind its conception now feels like a notion from a completely different age. That logic, of course, implied that lucrative, Marvel Cinematic Universe-like film franchises could be conjured from just about any intellectual property. Interestingly, one of the writers involved, Eric Heisserer, believes the Dark Universe imploded behind the scenes well before it did at the box office.
Heisserer, who’s serving as showrunner for franchise-aspiring Netflix television adaptation Shadow and Bone, had just broken big with his Oscar-nominated screenplay for 2016 sci-fi drama Arrival and horror film Lights Out when he was tapped to co-write (with Jon Spaihts) a Dark Universe reboot movie for vampire hunter Van Helsing, which Channing Tatum was expected to headline. When I was a kid, I somehow inherited an 8mm film projector and managed to convince my mom to buy me a handful of movies on the format. Now when I say “movies,” I mean these little spools of 8mm celluloid that basically took various motion pictures and condensed them down to silent 10-minute highlight reels, mostly in black and white.
They were in many ways the earliest precursor of home video, and one of the films I convinced my mom to purchase was Hammer Films’ Taste the Blood of Dracula. While the format really prevented me from making much sense of the narrative, certain imagery–Dracula’s face emerging from beneath a cracking caul of dust, two beautiful young women driving a stake into the heart of an older gentleman, a younger man drinking a cup of blood and choking as it poured out of his mouth–stayed firmly with me.

Saw co-creator Leigh Whannell and Blumhouse’s update of The Invisible Man hits theaters next weekend, which means we can all move on with our lives and pretend as though the ill-fated Dark Universe never existed. Universal’s last attempt at rebooting their stable of iconic monsters for modern audiences didn’t go too well, with The Mummy quickly following 2014’s forgotten Dracula Untold in falling spectacularly at the first hurdle.
The Universal Monsters had appealed to movie fans for decades because they were all painted as tragic figures in their own ways, so the decision by the studio to try and ape the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s recipe for success and reinvent the characters as the stars of action blockbusters always seemed doomed to fail. Sherlock might be on indefinite hiatus, but the two creators of BBC’s smash-hit drama, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, have got a new show lined up. Variety reports that the pair are working on a TV series based on Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel Dracula.
Simply titled Dracula, the show will follow the same format as Sherlock, taking the shape of a miniseries run of feature-length 90 minute episodes. It’ll be produced by Sue Vertue and her company Harstwood Films, who were also behind the aforementioned BBC hit.
Variety says that Moffat and Gatiss are “currently working on solo projects” but will turn their attention towards Dracula soon. Though no scripts have been written, talks are already underway with the BBC for broadcast rights in the U.K. It seems likely that a deal will be made, too, seeing as Moffat has brought much success to the corporation...

Dracula is returning to England. Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are in talks to produce new series for BBC...
Sherlock creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have detected another classic novel to sink their teeth into. Bram Stoker’s Dracula begins with a real estate deal. Jonathan Harker secures the Transylvanian count some scattered properties in Whitby, England, where he can kick off his cape and hide his native soil. Those hiding places are discovered through some stiff detective work. 127 years after the 1897 publication of the classic horror novel, the quintessential vampire will be returning to England. Moffat and Gatiss are in negotiations with the BBC to create a new Dracula miniseries.
See related Steven Spielberg's Duel: An Appreciation Top 10 Simon Pegg film and TV roles Zak Penn interview: Atari: Game Over, Ready Player One
Dracula will be the first time Moffat and Gatiss have collaborated since Sherlock aired its long awaited season 4 earlier this year. The future of Sherlock has not yet been decided. Work on the new Dracula series will begin after Moffat finishes his sixth and final season on Doctor Who.
Dracula has been adapted for stage, screen and TV many times. Stoker wrote the first theatrical version. It was first adapted to film by F. W. Murnau in Nosferatu in 1922. Bela Lugosi went from stage to screen when he starred in the 1931 Universal Studios classic. The BBC produced the TV movie Count Dracula, starring Louis Jourdan in 1977.
Gatiss is on record as a fan of the 1958 Hammer Horror version of Dracula, which starred Christopher Lee as the count and Peter Cushing as Dr. Van Helsing. Moffat took on classic horror in 2007 when he wrote the series Jekyll. Gatiss played Dracula in a full-cast audio play from Big Finish in 2016.
There is no word on whether Dracula will be set in modern day England.

His history of underperforming at the box office makes predicting a post-Marvel career tricky.

In his latest film, Gifted, Evans plays Frank Adler, the aforementioned single uncle to a spunky six year-old gifted child, Mary (Mckenna Grace). Frank is caring for his niece after the unexpected death of his sister and he yearns for the child to have a normal and healthy life. After he sends Mary off on her first day of school, her teacher, Bonnie (Jenny Slate), notices the child’s remarkable abilities and alerts the school’s principal. Mary is offered a chance to attend a prestigious school for gifted children, which Frank promptly declines. This kicks off a custody battle between Frank and his estranged mother, Evelyn...

A salute to some of the brilliant and hard-hitting episodes in Steven Moffat's first TV series, the evergreen Press Gang...
Before River Song, Trenzalore and his take on The Doctor, before Sherlock fell off a building and provided multiple explanations, before James Nesbitt flipped out in a zoo in Jekyll, before Coupling, Joking Apart and Chalk, maybe even before he was known as The Moff, before all that came the quite brilliant Press Gang. Steven Moffat's first TV series, which he wrote all 42 episodes of, was based on an idea by his father, Bill Moffat. At its centre it had a brilliant will they/won't they relationship, and the epitome of a strong female character in Lynda Day. After 5 series it ended, but left behind so many quality episodes, which in trying to choose the stand out mind-blowers has been nigh on impossible. But for jolting,...

We asked Steven Moffat if he's involved in the movie of Jekyll. And he is. To a point...
At the end of the round table interviews for the Doctor Who Christmas special last week, we quickly got a chance to quiz Steven Moffat about the planned movie of his TV show, Jekyll.
Based on the Jekyll & Hyde story, Moffat’s Jekyll cast James Nesbitt in the lead role, and the Hollywood version has seen Captain America himself, Chris Evans, cast in the lead. Charles Mondry and Anthony Bagarozzi – who penned The Nice Guys – are writing the screenplay. Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer is set to direct.
But is Steven Moffat involved in any way? Well, once all the Doctor Who questions were done, I asked him.
“Yes, I’m involved a bit”, he told us. “It’s all being talked about at the moment. We’ll see, we’ll see.

It looks like we now know which movie Chris Evans is going to squeeze in between Captain America appearances. Deadline is reporting that Evans is set to star in the upcoming Lionsgate thriller “Jekyll.” He was rumored earlier this year to be circling the project, but it looks like now it’s official.
Despite what you may be thinking, “Jekyll” is not a simple retelling of the classic “Dr.

Back in July, we reported that Chris Evans had come aboard to star in a big screen adaptation of Jekyll, based on the hit 2007 BBC One mini-series of the same name, written by Doctor Who and Sherlock creator Steven Moffat and starring James Nesbitt. Today we have word that the project has found a director, with Zombieland filmmaker Ruben Fleischer coming aboard to take the helm. With this project moving forward, it also sets up a competitive situation with Universal's potential Dr. Jekyll spin-off starring Russell Crowe.
Back in May, before Russell Crowe was confirmed as Dr. Jekyll in Universal's The Mummy reboot, a report surfaced that there have been discussions at Universal for a future spin-off involving his Dr. Jekyll character. That was never confirmed by Universal, but this report from Deadline indicates that the spin-off is still in the works, which will come after Dr. Jekyll in The Mummy,...
