One day, many years ago, actor Andy Serkis sat in his kitchen working on the voice for the character of Gollum in Peter Jackson's forthcoming adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings. It was then, unexpectedly, that he became inspired by the most unlikely creature imaginable: his cat, Dizz.
Dizz came into the kitchen and began retching up a fur ball. It was in this moment, as Dizz gagged and lurched forward, that a light bulb went off in Serkis' head. “I saw his spine kind of rippling and he started to go [retching sounds] and that is exactly where Gollum came from," Serkis told a crowd of spectators at Fan Expo San Francisco in 2024. “My entire career I owe to my cat," Serkis quipped. And we owe Dizz for one of the most iconic voices in the movies:

By the late '80s, "Gilligan's Island" had become a pop culture fixture. Though Sherwood Schwartz's sitcom only lasted for three seasons and 98 episodes from 1964 to 1967, it was heavily syndicated throughout the '70s and '80s, ensuring new generations became familiar with Gilligan and his fellow castaways. Not only that, the show produced two animated spin-offs with "The New Adventures of Gilligan" (1974-75) and "Gilligan's Planet" (1982-83). What's more, the original cast returned for three live-action TV movies: "Rescue From Gilligan's Island" (1978), "The Castaways on Gilligan's Island" (1979), and "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island" (1981). So, by the end of the 1980s, the "Gilligan's" universe was most certainly etched into the public's collective consciousness.
But you could also argue that it was waning in popularity. The last live-action TV movie, "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island" — which almost featured a different team entirely — was not a big ratings success...

Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, the wife-and-husband producers who have 13 Oscar nominations and an Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award between them, will be honored at the Oscar Wilde Awards next month.
The 19th annual event is scheduled for Feb. 27, three days before the Academy Awards, at the historic Ebell theater in Los Angeles. Actors John C. Reilly and Éanna Hardwicke will be saluted as well.
Also new to the lineup is Will Ferrell, who will introduce Reilly and hand him his trophy. The pair, of course, have co-starred in such films as Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006), Step Brothers (2008) and Holmes & Watson (2018).
Created by the US-Ireland Alliance, the Oscar Wilde Awards celebrate the work of those from Ireland — and some who are not — who contribute to film, television and music. (Kennedy, with eight Oscar noms, and Marshall, with five, are Californians born in Berkeley and Glendale, respectively.

Steven Spielberg is the most commercially successful director of all time, and his movies have made over $10 billion at the global box office. In a career spanning over 50 years, Spielberg has excelled in a variety of genres, including sci-fi, action, horror and drama. One common thread in all his creative pursuits has been massive box office success. Spielberg has set the record for the highest-grossing movie of all time on three separate occasions.
According to Spielberg himself, his first ever movie made a profit of $1. He made Firelight with a $500 budget when he was just 17, and his ticket sales from the one-night showing totaled $501. From these humble beginnings, Spielberg developed a career as a director of box office smashes. His highest-grossing movies aren't necessarily his best, since Schindler's List, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Catch Me If You Can all fail to crack the top ten, but he has...

Stories about treasure hunting are awesome. Way before I was introduced to the world of movies, I was reading Treasure Island, Sinbad the Sailor, and the purposefully anticlimactic Sonar Kella. Then there were the Tintin comics and the amazing 2011 film, The Adventures of Tintin, that absolutely enthralled me. Mackenna’s Gold and King Solomon’s Mines were brought up in every conversation with my parents so many times that I have lost count at this point. Despite the tacky nature of the franchises, the Lara Croft and The Mummy movies were hugely influential. Animated feature films like Treasure Planet, The Road to El Dorado and Atlantis: The Lost Empire were on repeat in my household. Despite the problematic nature of its lead, there’s no denying the effect that the first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films had on me. One Piece, the manga and the anime, is another great example. And even...

HBO is really committed to this whole "spending 10 years and the gross domestic product of a small country rebooting an improbably good film series for an audience that is more hostile to it than ever" thing, huh?
It would be beating a dead Thestral to go over the laundry list of reasons why a "Harry Potter" TV series is a strange idea at best, though any one of them -- most notably author J.K. Rowling's disturbing anti-trans social media rants -- could potentially make joining the series a real headache for any actor involved. But many can't help but wait with baited breath and perhaps, admittedly, some morbid curiosity to see who will be brave enough to tackle these iconic roles.

Ridley Scott's sequel Gladiator II has become one of Paramount's highest-grossing movies of all time, surpassing some classic movies in the process. The movie is the sequel to the Oscar-winning sword and sandal epic Gladiator, which Scott directed back in 2000. Though original lead Russell Crowe did not return to star in the sequel, Scott again directed, and Paul Mescal stepped into the lead role. Though Gladiator II has not quite reached the critical heights of the first movie, the film has still proven to be a success theatrically, grossing almost $370 million worldwide to date.
Due to its recent success, Gladiator II has entered the list of Paramount's highest-grossing movies of all-time, according to figures from The Numbers. The movie currently sits at #47 on the chart, with a worldwide gross of $369.7 million, taking $134 million at the domestic box office. Gladiator II sits just above Raiders of the Lost Ark,...

This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" season 1, episode 2.
Everything can seem dangerous when you're a kid lost in space, and the pirate droid Sm-33 makes no exceptions. "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" certainly takes care to frame him as a potential threat. When the clunky, partially malfunctioning robot with an alien critter residing in its empty eye socket regains power and shuffles into the frame, you'd be forgiven for thinking you've accidentally tuned in to a space-themed horror movie and witnessing the main antagonist.
Fortunately, Sm-33 -- a not-so-subtle nod to Mr. Smee from "Peter Pan," no doubt -- is firmly on the main characters' side, at least after one of the show's young heroes, Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), convinces him that she's killed the former captain of the Onyx Cinder and taken charge. Though old and decrepit, he proves to be a useful (if unnerving) ally who...

Sequels are quite common in today’s generation. When a film (be it a live-action drama or animated movie) becomes a massive hit and grosses millions at the box office, the studios decide to expand that world by making more installments under the same franchise.

With Paddington in Peru closing in on its premiere date, many fans of the beloved children's franchise may be wondering which actor or actress should be the villain in the next Paddington movie. Despite being first created in 1958, Paddington Bear has managed to captivate countless generations of readers and viewers right up until the present day. In 2014, the current movie franchise kicked off, with Ben Whishaw voicing the eponymous bear. Now, the franchise is close to releasing Paddington in Peru, which means even more fun - and chaos - for Paddington to get into.

It's been well over a decade since "Indiana Jones" filmmaker Steven Spielberg and "The Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson teamed up to bring us "The Adventures of Tintin." Based on the works of Hergé, it was an ambitious motion-capture adaptation of the "Tintin" comics that was intended to be the start of a full-fledged franchise. Spielberg directed the first installment, with Jackson expected to direct the sequel. Sadly, that sequel never came. So, what happened exactly? And is the movie still going to happen?
Last we heard about "Tintin 2" was way back in 2018 when Spielberg, who was in the midst of promoting "Ready Player One," suggested that it was still going to happen. Or, at the very least, that he still wanted it to happen. Here's what Spielberg had to say about it at the time:

Those who were alert enough to be following cinema discourse in the early 2000s may recall the painful inflection point the medium had reached in terms of visual effects. A lot of productions were moving away from practical effects wholesale and leaning hard into CGI. Many audience members hated the technological shift, as CGI effects were proving to look plastic and unconvincing. While Steven Spielberg might have employed CGI carefully and effectively in his 1993 film "Jurassic Park," multiple films from the early 2000s were proving that an overuse of CGI made for truly awful film imagery.
A few examples include 2001's "The Mummy Returns," which features a terrible-looking CGI version of Dwayne Johnson, or 2002's "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones" which features many animated characters as well as digital sets. Since the success of “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train,” which grossed nearly $50 million domestically in 2021, it’s been clear that anime will continue to be a major player at the specialty box office for years to come. Now, with Toho International’s acquisition of one of the medium’s top American distributors, Gkids, competition for the eyes and dollars of anime fans is about to step up.
It’s a natural fit for the two companies to be joining forces. Last December, Toho and GKids made box office history by pushing two Japanese-produced films into the top 3 at the U.S. box office on the same weekend. For Toho, it was “Godzilla Minus One,” the first ever film from cinema’s oldest franchise to win an Oscar, earning $56.4 million in America.
For GKids, it was Hayao Miyazaki’s likely final film — and also Oscar winner — “The Boy and the Heron,” which...

Futurama season 12 has just released another one of the show's anthology episodes, and one of its storylines is made even stranger by the season's highest-rated episode. Many Futurama seasons have featured anthology episodes, which put the various members of the Planet Express crew in bizarre non-canon storylines involving things like them being animals, toys, and cartoon characters. Futurama season 12's anthology episode has some fairly wacky stories, but the framing device of the episode may be the strangest part.
Futurama season 12, episode 9, "The Futurama Mystery Liberry" follows the path of the more recent Futurama anthology episodes, with it picking a theme and telling stories that parody significant elements of that theme. This time, the Futurama cast appears in three different segments based on classic children's stories such as Encyclopedia Brown and The Adventures of Tintin. Interestingly, each of these stories is actually told by a very special Futurama guest star.

At 77, Steven Spielberg isn’t holding back! The legendary director just dropped some truth bombs about his post-War of the Worlds flicks, admitting that the films that followed didn’t quite hit the mark. It’s not every day you hear a titan of cinema reflect so candidly, but Spielberg’s honesty shines through as he acknowledges a string of less-than-stellar projects.

Steven Spielberg never had any qualms about the industry he adopted as his own. Hollywood, known for its brutal behind-the-scenes studio politics and overarching artistic ambitions, has instead been a reservoir of Spielbergian dreams. Action, adventure, science-fiction, drama, tragedy, romance, and musical – the director has seen it all and done it all.

Meanwhile, the industry has progressed at a steady pace to produce avant-garde cinema. Visions of the scale of Star Wars and Blade Runner were a far cry from the Hitchcock-era thrillers just as Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones were incomparable to George Lucas’ creations. Spielberg, born between the old and the new, witnessed the changes and contributed to the evolution of Hollywood, helping mold it into a postmodern model of ideas.

Andy Serkis expresses hope for The Adventures of Tintin 2, potentially marking the tenth collaboration with producers Philpa Boyens and Fran Walsh. The original film, directed by Steven Spielberg, was a box-office and critical success but faced delays in producing a sequel due to busy schedules and high demand for the filmmakers and actors. More than a decade has gone by since the big screens displayed the Steven Spielberg-directed film The Adventures of Tintin, which was both a critical and commercial success. And, as fans know, a sequel was announced years ago, but development came to a standstill, erasing any hopes of coming to reality for a while. Fortunately, Andy Serkis, who starred as Captain Archibald Haddock and Sir Francis Haddock in the animated movie, has good news as he recently offered a promising update regarding the long-delayed project.

More than a decade after the 2011 release of Steven Spielberg’s criminally underrated The Adventures of Tintin hit theaters, fans of Hergé’s beloved characters continue to wonder if we’ll ever see a sequel. In October 2011, Peter Jackson said he would direct The Adventures of Tintin 2. However, the silence on the project has been deafening ever since.

Director Peter Jackson has one of the most fascinating career trajectories in that he started out making gory low-budget exploitation films and then went into big-money epic franchises, with very little transition. The reason for this seemingly impossible leap from obscure cult movies to mainstream success is as simple as the hard work he put in to make it happen.
Jackson is most famous for The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, but he has many other films that showcase his skill as a storyteller. Whether it's naughty puppets, oozing zombies, or giant apes, his skill as a filmmaker comes through. From the very beginning, Peter Jackson had a vision and style that would propel him to the realm of elite movie directors.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost shine in genre-bending dramedies beyond the famous Cornetto trilogy. Collaborative efforts with Edgar Wright are just the beginning of their timeless comedy legacy. Underrated gems like Slaughterhouse Rulez and The Adventures of Tintin showcase their versatility.
The best Simon Pegg and Nick Frost movies and series are typically brilliant combinations of comedy, drama, and several other genres/sub-genres. This formula was made famous by director Edgar Wright, who collaborated with Frost and Pegg in the Three Flavors Cornetto trilogy. All three famously worked together on the genre-mashing dramedies, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End.
However, Pegg and Frost's Edgar Wright movies aren't the only collaborations that deserve a spot in anyone's weekend movies playlist. Fueled by their well-publicized but deeply genuine friendship, Pegg and Frost's collaborative efforts are products of a long and creative partnership that goes way beyond the Cornetto trilogy.

Steven Spielberg's new sci-fi movie will be his first summer blockbuster since 2016. The untitled movie also features UFOs, a favorite topic from the director's early years. The movie has a chance to reverse a recent negative box office trend for Spielberg movies.
Steven Spielberg's new movie will revive a trend from his career after a decade. The iconic director, whose early works include the TV movie thriller Duel and the Goldie Hawn-led The Sugarland Express, is best known for blockbuster releases including the iconic movies Raiders of the Lost Ark (the first of the Indiana Jones movies) and Jurassic Park, as well as tentpoles that balance popular and prestige sensibilities such as Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List. Over the course of his career, he has been nominated for 23 Oscars, winning three.

Few directors venture into both animation and live-action due to the vastly different skill sets required. Some successful directors like Wes Anderson and Guillermo del Toro have mastered both mediums. Most directors choose to stick with either animated movies or live-action, but some directors are versatile enough to excel at both. Animation and live-action require vastly different skill sets for directors. This is why so few directors stray from their comfort zones. The Adventures of Tintin movie had high expectations for a new franchise that didn't quite meet box office successes. Fans eagerly await Tintin 2, but production delays have left them wondering why the sequel is taking so long. Peter Jackson is set to direct Tintin 2, with Jamie Bell eagerly awaiting the chance to reprise his role as Tintin.
The Adventures of Tintin was meant to kick off a new franchise by some of the most acclaimed filmmakers in the business, but Tintin 2 is taking longer than expected. Released in 2011, Steven Spielberg's Tintin was the latest in a long line of film and television adaptations of the famous Belgian comic strip character, but it was also one of the most promising because two more sequels were expected to arrive after The Adventures of Tintin. However, despite over a decade passing, fans are still wondering why Tintin 2 is taking so long.
