A Justice Department official believes she was fired from her job due to refusing to restore the gun rights to controversial actor Mel Gibson. Elizabeth G. Oyer is a US Justice Department pardon attorney appointed by Joe Biden in 2022. However, the role is not political, as her job is to supervise matters of clemency and recommendations for presidential pardons. She was working on a new project to restore gun ownership rights to individuals convicted of crimes and misdemeanors. The 95-person list was narrowed down to nine. One name not on that list was actor Mel Gibson.

Elizabeth G. Oyer, the former pardon attorney at the US Justice Department, was fired on Friday (March 7th) along with several other high-ranking officials. In an interview with The New York Times, she said the dismissal took place one day after she pushed back against restoring Mel Gibson’s gun rights.

Gibson, who lost his gun rights due to a 2011 misdemeanor domestic violence conviction, was appointed by President Trump as a special ambassador to the “great but very troubled place” Hollywood in January. According to Oyer, Gibson’s lawyer wrote a letter shortly afterward to senior Justice Department officials James R. McHenry III and Emil Bove III, requesting the actor’s gun rights be restored

Fast forward to two weeks ago, when Oyer was put in a group to restore gun rights to people convicted of crimes in what’s described as an unusual assignment for the pardon attorney’s office.

Most filmgoers recognize big cities like Miami, Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles in their favorite motion pictures. Sure enough, those locals provide the backdrop to several classic pictures from Michael Bay's "Bad Boys" to "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "King Kong" and Michael Mann's "Heat."  However, another prominent locale exists in the film world, a place you've likely seen more often than not, even if it didn't immediately stand out. We're talking, of course, about the state of Maine.

Uniquely, many stories take place in the Pine Tree State. Its lush scenery and coastal views make for stunning cinematography, while the colder elements provide the necessary bleakness for heavier dramas. Here, family friendly fare like "Casper" and "Pete's Dragon" took flight, while more intense films such as the alligator thriller "Lake Placid" and the Stephen King horror tale "Pet Sematary" found unique ways to scare the bejesus out of audiences.

As we predicted earlier this week, Mickey 17, the Robert Pattinson-led sci-fi flick from Parasite director Bong Joon Ho is having a hard time attracting audiences in North America. While the movie was initially looking at an opening in the mid-20s, the outlook for the film has grown grimmer, with Deadline reporting that it’s unlikely to cross the $20 million mark. So far, they have it opening in the $18-19 million range.

Considering that the movie cost north of $118 million, that’s a terrible number, with it looking like it has the makings of being a major flop for Warner Bros. While I enjoyed it, one must admit that it’s more of a cult movie than anything that would ever connect with a mainstream audience. It has a B CinemaScore rating, which is Ok, but with an opening number like that, it seems unlikely that the film will cross the $40 million mark.

Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn joined forces for this criminally overlooked thriller, which has finally found success thanks to free streaming. Released back in 2018, the crime thriller Dragged Across Concrete finds the pair as cops who, in desperate need of money after being suspended over footage of them assaulting a suspect, must descend into the criminal underworld. It’s a dark thriller that will leave you feeling dirty thanks to all the grit and violence, and is well worth checking out. As many clearly now are.

Written and directed by S. Craig Zahler, Dragged Across Concrete features an ensemble cast that includes Tory Kittles, Michael Jai White, Jennifer Carpenter, Laurie Holden, Fred Melamed, Thomas Kretschmann, and Don Johnson alongside Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn. Despite having the star-power of Mark Wahlberg behind it, Flight Risk has failed to find the box office success that Lionsgate was certainly hoping it would. After grossing just $300,000 from the box office this weekend and dropping both earnings and screens rapidly, Flight Risk is set to depart from theaters soon just short of one final box office milestone. Currently sitting at $29 million domestically, Flight Risk will not reach the $30 million mark, and although the film has earned $12 million from international markets, it is also not enough to help it reach $50 million at the global box office either. In addition to Wahlberg, Flight Risk also stars Michelle Dockery and Topher Grace, and the film was written by Jared Rosenberg and directed by Mel Gibson.

A panned neo-noir crime thriller headlined by Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe sets its sights on free streaming. Released back in 2013, Broken City finds Wahlberg taking the lead as a former cop-turned-private investigator, who finds himself in serious danger after being tasked with investigating the wife of Crowe’s mayor of New York City.

Other movies to experience steep drop-offs from the previous week were Companion (Jack Quaid) at 61% and Flight Risk (Mark Wahlberg) at 67%.

After featuring in two projects in 2024 and kicking off 2025 with Flight Risk, the aviation thriller directed by Mel Gibson, it’s shaping up to be a relatively quiet year for Mark Wahlberg. However, just because he might not be appearing in any projects the rest of the year doesn’t mean he isn’t still hard at work, and one of his movies in the works just got a major update. A new report from Deadline announced that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who will be seen later this year in Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man, has joined Wahlberg in the cast of By Any Means. The role originally belonged to Sterling K. Brown when the film was announced in October, but he has since departed the project and been replaced by Mateen II.

Set to unspool the week after Universal’s M3GAN spin-off Soulm8te, Mutiny‘s opening weekend is currently unoccupied by other titles. Directed by Jean-François Richet (Plane), the film follows Cole Reed (Statham), who after seeing his billionaire industrialist boss murdered in front of him, is set up to take the fall for the crime — leaving him on the run as he works to uncover an international conspiracy.

Also starring Annabelle Wallis and Roland Møller, the film is written by Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis. Statham produced alongside Marc Butan.

That is a radical decrease in the amount of normal time before home subscribers can see a hit film for no extra charge.

In a week that saw four different films released no earlier than January 12 make the VOD top 10 lists, Mel Gibson’s “Flight Risk” (Lionsgate) currently is the most popular. At Netflix, the Italian-set rom-com “La Dolce Villa” capitalized on Valentine’s Day to take the #1 spot.

With the absence of any same-week streaming charts for all services, IndieWire normally concentrates on top 10 charts for VOD (which usually is the first stage of home availability) and Netflix’s same-day list. But the gravity of these two announcements overshadows our normal coverage.

However, that hasn't stopped the new Mel Gibson directorial outing from hitting another global box office milestone, officially surpassing the $40 million mark thanks to over $12 million in overseas markets and almost $28 million domestically. This comes following a most recent box office weekend in which Flight Risk only managed another $1.5 million domestically, failing to enter the box office top 10 against tough competition from the likes of the consistent Mufasa: The Lion King and the brand-new MCU entry Captain America: Brave New World.

Captain America: Brave New World has dominated the conversation since the days leading up to its premiere, as early reviews hailed the film as one of the worst the MCU has to offer since it began with Iron Man in 2008. However, Anthony Mackie’s big screen debut as Captain America didn’t let poor Rotten Tomatoes reviews stop it from early a $180 million global haul during its box office debut, with $88 million coming from domestic earnings and $92 million from international markets. This $88 million domestic opening is more than the combined openings for the other top six biggest movies of the year, Dog Man, One of Them Days, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Flight Risk, and Wolf Man which, when totaled together, equal $83.8 million, still $5 million short of Captain America 4.

The new Mark Wahlberg thriller now in theaters, “Flight Risk” caught my attention and I’m planning on seeing it this week. Wahlberg (who I always have time for) plays a pilot navigating an intense flight with an air marshal and a fugitive on board. Set against the backdrop of the Alaskan wilderness, the film promises high-altitude suspense and a ton of “not all is as it seems” twists. It got me thinking about why thrillers on airplanes are so powerful. Maybe it’s because each one of us has had a moment on a flight during major turbulence where the thought has crossed our minds… “If this goes down, there’s not a lot of hope.”

In short, the stakes are just so high, and there are plenty of movies that capture that tension.

Mel Gibson is locked, loaded, and ready to go scorched earth on woke Hollywood, and if reports are to be believed, Donald Trump is backing his play. Gibson’s never been one to hold back, but this time, he’s allegedly coming for the bloodsuckers running the industry.

Saudi filmmaker Abdulaziz Alshlahei’s drama “Hobal” about clashes between tradition and modernity within a Saudi family during the early 1990s is scoring mightily at the Saudi Arabian box office, outperfoming Hollywood titles such as “Mufasa: The Lion King,” “Flight Risk” and “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.”

The timely film in which a Saudi family is forced by its grandfather to live in isolation in the desert at the outbreak of the 1990 Gulf War, when a young girl falls ill, prompting her mother to fight the patriarchy to try and save her child, is striking a deep chord with Saudi audiences. “Hobal” has now pulled more than 500,000 admissions since its Jan. 2 release via distributor Qanwat Group, racking up a handsome roughly $5.7 million take to date, according to figures from the Saudi Film Commission which compiles Saudi box office numbers.

Disney’s “Mufasa,” by contrast, has grossed 328,000 admissions and pulled $4.4 million locally since its Dec.

Ending a five-week trend of a new film claiming the top spot of the box-office weekend, Dog Man held onto the number one position for a second consecutive weekend, albeit by only a margin of only $5.2 million.

In its second weekend of release, DreamWorks Distribution’s Dog Man remained in first place with $13.7 million. This was more than enough to best second-place finisher, Heart Eyes, which debuted in second place with $8.5 million for Sony Pictures Releasing. Meanwhile, Universal Pictures saw its Love Hurts debut in third place with $5.8 million over the weekend. Dropping a spot from last weekend, Mufasa: The Lion King landed in fourth place where it took in $3.9 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, bringing its eight-week total to $235.2 million. Despite falling from second to fifth place this weekend, Companion managed to bring in $3.02 million in its second weekend of release to lift its overall total to $15.5 million for Warner Brothers.

Once among the most bankable stars of his generation, Mark Wahlberg has been having a bit of a rough run in the post-pandemic era. Many of his movies have debuted directly on streaming, and the few that have been afforded theatrical runs have under-performed. Barring one film, 2022's Uncharted, none of Wahlberg's releases in the last five years has been able to pass the $35 million mark worldwide. His latest offering, the action-thriller Flight Risk, recently hit what could be its final global box office milestone ahead of its digital debut in a few days.

If it makes anyone feel better, the $55 million total box office was the best for any Super Bowl weekend since 2020. It also continues year to date improvement, besting 2024 by close to 50 percent.

“Dog Man” (Universal) repeated as #1 with $13.7 million but unexpectedly dropped 62 percent in its second weekend after a surprisingly strong opening. “Heart Eyes” (Sony) and “Love Hurts” (Universal), two new wide releases, combined managed $15 million.

The DreamWorks animated film opened about the same as “The Wild Robot,” with a similar A Cinemascore. It was unlikely that “Dog Man” would reach the $144 million “The Wild Robot” attained, but based on precedent (similar films usually triple their openings), it seemed like it could become a $100 million grosser. With its steep drop, $85 million feels more likely.

Mel Gibson’s Flight Risk is a rather risk-free, formulaic, and lazily written confined space thriller that doesn’t have anything remarkable going for it—except for Mark Wahlberg’s zany antics as a psycho killer, which might turn a few heads. The simplistic premise, which follows a US Marshal and an informant being trapped in flight with a deranged, sadistic killer, had the potential to be a solid thriller with proper treatment. You’d think the yesteryear action star, who directed movies like Apocalypto and Hacksaw Ridge, would be able to spin an interesting narrative using this premise, but instead we are treated to a bland, toothless thriller that is unintentionally silly and ludicrous.

Having just about completed two weeks in theaters, the action film Flight Risk is already poised to land on PVOD platforms. Flight Risk debuted to muted box office results a few days ago, but earned the struggling studio Lionsgate its second number one finish of 2025, after a barren spell that lasted over a year. The movie has now passed what could possibly be its final global box office milestone, as it prepares to find a larger audience on streaming. Action films of this kind, more often than not in the post-pandemic era, have relied on theatrical runs to boost awareness for their eventual availability on streaming.

In what could be yet another record for a major theatrical-to-digital shortened window of release, there's a rumor that Mark Wahlberg's Flight Riskcould be heading to digital and VOD just a few weeks after its theatrical debut. The movie opened in theaters on Jan. 24, 2025, and earned $11.5 million on its opening weekend in North America. While the audience liked it enough to give it a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, critics savaged it with a 29% rotten rating. Now, there's a report from When to Stream claiming it'll be on VOD and digital on Valentine's Day, just three weeks after its debut.

Lionsgate has released its third quarter financial results after the spinoff of the media giant’s studio business into a separately traded stock.

The studio, led by CEO Jon Feltheimer, posted a sharply narrowed net loss attributable to shareholders at $21.9 million, compared to a year-earlier loss at $107.4 million when Lionsgate at the time reported on the impact of the earlier Hollywood writers and actors strikes on its content production and release pipeline.

During the latest quarter to Dec. 31, 2024, overall revenue fell to $970.5 million, against $975.1 million in the same period of last year. That blew past an analyst estimate for $922 million in overall third quarter revenues by $48 million.

Lionsgate posted an adjusted earnings per-share at 28 cents, which surpassed the analyst estimate by 21 cents. And the studio’s adjusted Oibda came to $144.2 million, against a year-earlier $151 million, which well exceeded the Wall Street estimate for $104 million in adjusted Oibda.

Disney’s “A Complete Unknown” continued its reign atop the U.K. and Ireland box office, bringing in £1.2 million ($1.5 million) in its third weekend and pushing its total to £8.3 million ($10.3 million), according to numbers from Comscore. The Bob Dylan biopic, starring Timothée Chalamet, has demonstrated strong staying power, maintaining its grip on the top spot despite competition from new releases.

Holding steady at No. 2, Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” roared to another $1.3 million in its seventh frame, bringing its cumulative gross to $36.4 million. Warner Bros.’ “Companion” debuted at No. 3 with a solid $915,609.
