How does the ad experience on a free streaming service compare to paid counterparts?
Streaming ads are simply a fact of life these days. Every major paid streaming service in the United States — with the exception of Apple TV+ — offers an ad plan these days, and the experience can vary greatly from service to service. But how does a streaming service that was always intended to be ad-supported stack up to premium services? I tested Tubi to find out the answer to that question, and you can read more about my experiment below.

Danny Cannon has racked up a lot of directing credits over the last 35 years, including credits on episodes of CSI, CSI: Miami, Dark Blue, Nikita, Shameless, Gotham, Pennyworth, and Gotham Knights, among others – but he’s best known for making a couple of feature films back in the 1990s: the poorly received Sylvester Stallone comic book adaptation Judge Dredd and the slasher sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (which is indeed canon to the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel that’s being made). Now, Deadline reports that Cannon has signed on to direct a high-concept horror thriller called Obey, which Altitude will be presenting to potential buyers at the European Film Market.

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and Judge Dredd director Danny Cannon has signed on to helm Obey, Deadline reports.
Written by Brandon & Kurtis Birtell, it follows an estranged couple who must learn to put their differences aside in order to save their son from a deranged home invader.
The masked intruder, known as Flip Face, orders them to “obey” if they ever want to see their son again in the high-concept horror thriller.
The film will be produced by Ross Dinerstein (The Void) for Campfire Studios, Josh Kesselman (1922) and Michael Sugar (Spotlight) for Sugar23, and Lindsay Macadam (Brain On Fire) for Great Pacific Media, which is providing production services for the project.
Altitude will be shopping Obey at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.
Outside of features, Cannon has directed the pilot episodes of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Gotham,” “Pennyworth,” “Gotham Knights,” and “Nikita.”

As strange as it is, moviegoers are fascinated by the assassin. Paid handsomely for their skills of stealth, marksmanship, martial arts, and general wanton violence, these contract killers have been the focus of some of the most thrilling and emotionally provocative films ever made.
Maybe it's because many of these hit-people share many viewers' relationship to their own work -- a disdain for the spiritually emptying but financially necessary professions that command much of their life. Maybe it's because a criminal mastermind of this nature -- so devoid of humanity that they reduce human lives to zeros in a bank account -- reveals more about the world around them than any other character type.
Or maybe it's because we just like watching people fight with guns and swords. In any case, we've put together our own hit-list of flicks featuring them, ranked based on their quality, legacy, and depiction of these captivating killers.

A seriously underrated action thriller series has just landed on Prime Video. Beginning back in 2010 before coming to an end in 2013, Nikita finds Mission: Impossible III and Die Hard 4 star Maggie Q taking the lead as a woman with a particular set of skills who escapes from the mysterious, nefarious organization in which she was trained and disappears...before returning three years later to take them down.
Airing on The CW, the series adapts Léon: The Professional, The Fifth Element, and Taken filmmaker Luc Besson's French 1990 action movie La Femme Nikita for U.S. audiences. While the series has largely been forgotten, it’s well worth taking another look, as Nikita boasts not only the action movie talents of Maggie Q, but also an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes. All four seasons of Nikita are now available to stream on Prime Video, and you can check out the official synopsis below.

Warning: Spoilers for Cross season 1 below!Cross season 1 proves how far former "Old Spice Guy" Isaiah Mustafa has come in his career. Prime Video's Cross cast Mustafa as Detective John Sampson, the best friend and partner of Aldis Hodge's titular character. This is one of the biggest roles the actor has received to date, having launched his career with small roles in 2005's The Island and shows like Days of Our Lives. However, it was Mustafa's role as the Old Spice Guy in "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like" ad campaign that propelled him to fame.
This was a series of adverts where Mustafa's swoonsome "Guy" would speak to the ladies watching, recommending they buy their partners Old Spice while bizarre sight gags unfolded in the background. These commercials became a viral sensation and Mustafa went on to front many more. However, his viral success didn't necessarily translate...

The first WrestleMania in WWE history was almost ruined in an instant. One of the biggest business decisions of Vince McMahon's career as a promoter, WrestleMania would help launch WWE into the global superpower that it is today. Had the first edition been a failure, the company's lifespan would have not been so long. As fans know, the first WrestleMania was a resounding success, but the event actually almost ended in disaster.
On YouTube, during the B4 the Bell podcast, one host, Chris Burns, revealed that a past conversation with the late Roddy Piper saw the Rowdy One insinuate that he almost considered killing Mr. T during the main event of WWE's first WrestleMania. The real heat that stemmed backstage between Mr. T and Roddy Piper has been well-documented, but this is the first instance that it's been said that Piper hated him badly enough to want to kill him.

The Protg introduced a new female assassin to the big screen, and Maggie Q's performance as Anna all but confirms that she should have been the new John Wick. Directed by Martin Campbell, The Protg earned a spot among the most underrated hitman movies due to a mixed critical response following its release in 2021. The movie grossed an astoundingly low $2.93 million across the U.S. and Canada during its opening weekend. It is difficult to understand why this might have been the case, as numerous core components within the film make The Protg worth revisiting.
Campbell is most famously known for reviving the Bond franchise and directing GoldenEye and Casino Royale, which ought to have been evidence enough that Campbell's work in The Protg would feature some fairly impressive action sequences. The movie certainly succeeds on this front. Several scenes in The Protg feel like they're the work of high-end action,...

Although his debut could be derailed by a potential preemption later this week, “As The World Turns” alum Van Hansis (ex-Luke Snyder) is returning to daytime television when he takes over the role of Lucas Jones on ABC’s “General Hospital,” last played by Ryan Carnes.
According to TV Insider, which first reported the news, Hansis is set to hit Port Charles on the Friday, October 4 episode, albeit contingent on whether or not ABC’s coverage of the Major League Baseball Wild Card Series causes a last-minute preemption of the drama series on Thursday, October 3.
While storyline details have not been announced, it looks like Lucas is back in town just in time for the awakening of his cousin, Lulu (now played by Alexa Havins), who requires a liver transplant.
Although Lucas and Lulu two are not related by blood, the show has recently made enormous efforts to rebuild the Spencer family,...

Nikita, aka La Femme Nikita, directed by Luc Besson, is a gripping and stylish blend of action, thriller, and emotional depth. The film tells the story of Nikita, a young, rebellious woman (played by Anne Parillaud) who is given a second chance at life after being sentenced to death for killing a police officer. Instead of facing her fate, she is recruited by a covert government organization and transformed into a highly skilled assassin.
The narrative revolves around Nikita’s transformation from a streetwise criminal into a sleek, efficient killer, under the watchful eye of her ruthless handler Bob (Tchéky Karyo). Nikita is an action movie that hails from before the genre's obsession with oriental martial arts or the ubiquitous use of CGI. It relied on subtle performances from the actors, changes of colour palette and the geometry of the scenes rather than just ramming the special effects up to 11 in post. This is why it really benefits from from its 4K restoration. The details of actors' faces and the contrast between colours are so much clearer. I remember seeing it first on TV chopped to 4 by 3 with Crt fuzz. It put a bullet in the head of most of its competition. Widescreen, DVD, upscale to HD and now in full cinematic glory, it gets better the more you can see.

Take some ingredients and just throw them together. Take a block of butter and stick it in a bowl, pour some wine and vinegar on top, drop in a shallot and microwave. Doesn't sound very appetising? Combined in the right way those ingredients form a deliciously rich sauce. In Nikita (aka La Femme Nikita) Luc Besson takes a quirky romantic comedy and blends in crime, espionage and a touch of Nouvelle Vague. What he serves up is cinema beurre blanc. Contemporate with Nikita, the most memorable action movies also cooked with unconventional ingredients, Die Hard, McTiernan's heartwarming story of family reunion, and Verhoeven's examination of the boundary between real and imagined self, Total Recall. These films all spawned unpalatable remakes and spinoffs trying to recapture the taste of the original (only Die Hard: With A Vengeance had enough vinegar).

Netflixs Magic: The Gathering animated series has been resurrected by the streamer. Per Collider, Star Trek: Picard Season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas will now head up the project. The announcement caps a long process for the series, which was first announced in 2019.
In 2019, MCU directors Joe and Anthony Russo were expected to direct with Henry Gilroy (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Jose Molina (Firefly) as head writers. That team eventually departed and Jeff Kline (Transformers: Prime) was brought on as executive producer. Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) was cast to voice the main character in the series, Planeswalker Gideon Jura, in 2021. Earlier this month, Routh said the series was shelved by Netflix. It has not been announced whether Routh will remain part of the series, which is now in its third incarnation.

The cards are back on the table.
Netflix is taking another shot at an animated series based on Magic: The Gathering, the hugely popular role-playing game. The streamer first picked up a series based on the game in 2019, with Joe and Anthony Russo as showrunners.
The Russo brothers later departed the series over creative differences, and Jeff Klein (Transformers: Prime) took the reins. Brandon Routh was set to play in one of the lead voice roles, but that iteration of the show eventually fell by the wayside. Routh said in an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival that the show is “apparently not happening”; while that’s true for the version he worked on, Netflix is now forging ahead with a new version.
The new series, which is set to start production soon, will be led by showrunner Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard, Disney+’s upcoming Vision). As with previous versions of the series,...

The long-gestating “Magic: The Gathering” animated series at Netflix is moving forward with a new showrunner.
Terry Matalas is now set as the series’ showrunner, as revealed during Netflix’s annual Geeked Week event. The new take on the series is now in production. The show is produced in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast. Plot details for the new iteration are being kept under wraps.
There had recently been widespread speculation that the show was no longer moving forward at Netflix. Originally announced in 2019, the first iteration of the series was overseen by the Russo brothers of MCU fame. But then Jeff Kline was announced as the new executive producer and creative lead on the show in 2021 after the Russos departed over creative differences, with Brandon Routh being announced as voicing the series lead not long after.
Since then, however, there has been virtually no news about the series.

"For ten years, Bosch and Bosch: Legacy have been two of our most defining series for Prime Video, Freevee, and Amazon MGM Studios. Michael Connelly is one of the most prolific authors of detective fiction and crime novels. So far, Connelly has published almost 40 novels and multiple book series that share an intricate and unique universe. From Harry Bosch from the Bosch book series, to Mickey Haller from The Lincoln Lawyer book series, many of Michael Connelly's books have seen success and critically-acclaimed screen adaptations. And now it's time for another Michael Connelly character to take center stage: Rene Ballard.
Rene Ballard is the latest character from Michael Connelly, an LAPD detective that usually crosses paths with Harry Bosch. Ballard has a hard time within the LAPD at first, as she has to navigate lots of infuriating red tape, blatant misogyny, and political agendas. This makes Rene Ballard similar in many ways to Bosch's maverick detective, Harry Bosch. The new Bosch spin-off series will center around Rene Ballard and her particular journey within the LAPD.

Horror fans received a scary treat last Halloween when it was announced that a Poltergeist television series was in development at Amazon MGM Studios. News was scarce at the time, with the only tidbit being that the series is inspired by the 1982 film of the same name. While the home featured in the 1982 classic Poltergeist (watch it Here) sits on the market, looking for a buyer with more than $1 million to spare, Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward with the Poltergeist TV series we first heard about back in October of last year. Variety reports that the in-development project has just found the duo that will serve as the show’s writers, showrunners, and executive producers: Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson.
Variety notes that Vazquez has previously worked on the shows Fear the Walking Dead, Star Trek: Discovery, Once Upon a Time, Prison Break, and Nikita. It has been three years since fans last saw Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Kevin Feige has confirmed that the character will return. Originally titled Vision Quest, the series was announced in October 2022 and is said to pick up with the rogue Vision based on the all-white variant that was last seen in WandaVision. Jac Schaeffer was the original head writer for the series but vacated the role to focus on Agatha All Along, while Star Trek: Picard's Terry Matalas was brought on in May 2024 to serve as the new showrunner.
Speaking with Inverse, Feige discussed the upcoming Vision series, which may or may not still have the Vision Quest title. Feige said it was after watching Star Trek: Picard Season 3 that he wanted to hire Matalas to guide the upcoming Vision series with Paul Bettany, who is expected to reprise his role. In late May, Marvel made the exciting announcement that Star Trek: Picard season three showrunner, Terry Matalas, would be helming the upcoming Vision series for Disney+. Now fans can truly look forward to the series, formerly called Vision Quest, as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has officially confirmed that Matalas is working on the project.
In an interview with Inverse, Feige reportedly fought hard to seek out the Picard Season 3 showrunner, as the lifelong Star Trek fan was as impressed with the series as many of its fans were. "Thats how I got to know him," Feige said. "It was from his amazing [work on Picard Season 3. I said: This is incredible. I don't know how this exists. Let me find the person who made this." A unique structure sets 24 apart as events unfold over the course of a day. Key components for success include a powerful protagonist, changing storylines, and action-packed sequences. Shows like Nikita and Strike Back echo themes of sacrifice, tension, and unpredictable plot twists like in 24.
24 is a compelling action drama centered on political conflicts and, fortunately, it's not the only TV show of its kind. The most significant appeal that differentiates the series from thrillers that came before it and those that followed, was its unique structure that allowed the events of each 24 season to unfold over a day. No other show can replicate as unique and engaging of a format, but other components that play into the success of 24 are found throughout other political thrillers.
Such aspects include a powerful protagonist, tightly focused storylines that change with each season, and, of course, adrenaline-inducing action sequences. The latter is a crucial...

Marvel has tapped “Star Trek: Picard” executive producer Terry Matalas to resurrect Vision, the synthezoid played by Paul Bettany, for a new, untitled Disney+ series set for 2026, Variety has learned exclusively. Bettany will return to the role and Matalas will serve as showrunner.
After Vision died at the hands of Thanos in 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” he returned twice over in 2021’s “WandaVision,” first as a spectral creation by his beloved, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), through magic powered by grief; then as a rebuilt, nuts-and-bolts android with a ghost white appearance and zero memory of his past life. When the two Visions battled in the “WandaVision” finale, Wanda’s Vision restored the ghost Vision’s memories, then Wanda allowed her Vision to fade from existence. The new show will take place after those events, as ghost Vision presumably explores his new purpose in life.

A Cillian Murphy-starring action movie from five years ago is currently working its way up the Netflix charts, and it's the closest the actor has come to starring in a John Wick film. Murphy's Oppenheimer Oscar success has given the Irish star new levels of fame following an already impressive career. Murphy enjoyed a long and successful career long before he became an Academy Award winner. Now, one of Murphy's lesser-known movies from 2019 has found itself trending on Netflix, and the comparisons to the John Wick franchise are inescapable.
Many movies and TV shows like John Wick have popped up ever since the first installment in the series was released in 2014. While a handful of John Wick copycats have proven to be hits, most have failed to make an impact. One such movie, which was initially dismissed when it first came out, has found renewed interest on Netflix.

Thankfully for Sawa, Dr. Dre (who directed the video) was a fan of his work in Final Destination and suggested him instead. “There happened to be somebody in the casting office that knew somebody who was friends with me, and they called me that way… and it ended up working out pretty good,” Sawa explained, adding that the video was “one of the proudest things I’ve been a part of.

Sources say Kim’s intention was to lay the foundation for season one of Avatar: The Last Airbender after stepping in for the beloved franchise’s creators. Given the long turnaround time in crafting the series — Netflix ordered it in 2018, the creators left in late 2020 and the show didn’t debut until February 2024 — sources say Kim was ready to move on to new opportunities.

4K just got a whole lot sharper, as Sony will release Luc Besson’s 1990 action-thriller La Femme Nikita on the format in June, joining other Besson films like 1994’s The Professional and 1997’s The Fifth Element on the format. This release — which comes in a slick steel book — is restored from the original camera negative, with a 4K image that boasts 2160p Ultra High Definition.
Here is Sony’s official writeup for the movie: “From director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) comes the must-see thriller about a vicious street punk turned sexy, sophisticated and lethally dangerous assassin. Starring Anne Parillaud, Jeanne Moreau and Jean Reno, La Femme Nikita is “slick, stylish and tremendously entertaining” (The New York Times)! Rescued from death row by a top-secret agency, Nikita (Anne Parillaud) is slowly transformed from a cop-killing junkie into a cold-blooded bombshell with a license to kill. But when she begins the deadliest mission of her career,...

Exclusive: Maggie Q is set to headline Prime Video’s Untitled Renée Ballard series, a Bosch spinoff about the LAPD’s Cold Case Division. This marks the first series in Amazon MGM Studios’ Bosch franchise, inspired by the work of bestselling author Michael Connelly, which is not led by Titus Welliver. Amazon declined comment.
The untitled series follows Detective Renée Ballard (Q), who is tasked with running the LAPD’s new cold case division—a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest case load in the city. Ballard approaches these frozen-in-time cases with empathy and determination. When she uncovers a larger conspiracy during her investigations, she’ll lean on the assistance of her retired ally, Harry Bosch (Welliver), to navigate the dangers that threaten both her unit and her life.
Connelly, Michael Alaimo, and Kendall Sherwood executive produce. Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate executive produce for Fabel Entertainment, with Jasmine Russ as co-executive producer.

How often do we see a sequel to a spinoff that is actually a lot of fun? What if you then also made it a tragic love story that involves zombies? That sounds like a Roger Corman or Troma movie but in actuality it’s Return of the Living Dead III (watch it Here) and its from channel favorite Brian Yuzna. Return of the Living Dead is a stone cold classic and is one that I sometimes prefer watching over any of the original Romero trilogy due to how different it is and how it sets up its own rules. Part 2 I have great memories of seeing on TV at my Nana’s house in Santa Ana, California on an old tube TV. It skates that Evil Dead II line of leaning much further into the comedy realm than the first, which is pretty funny in its own way and right.

Aaron Stanford is returning to the MCU, as it was revealed in the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer released during the Superbowl on Sunday. He is reprising the role of Pyro which he portrayed in X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand.
“I’m very excited to be revisiting this role, and couldn’t think of a better place for Pyro’s resurrection than the Deadpool universe,” Standford tells Deadline in a statement.
While details as to the plot of the film have thus far been under wraps, director Shawn Levy told Deadline at last year’s Toronto Film Festival that the goal was for the film to feel “grounded” and “real” — more like “a descendant of Midnight Run, and 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles” than “a descendant of Airplane.”
In a recent appearance on BroBible’s Post-Credit podcast, Matthew Vaughn, the filmmaker behind Marvel titles like X-Men: First Class,...

Halloween Ends may have killed iconic slasher Michael Myers off on the big screen, but there’s really no stopping a successful horror franchise. Last October, Malek Akkad’s Trancas International Films secured a deal with Miramax Television to develop and co-produce a Halloween TV series… and one person who would be interested in working on the show is Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers director Dwight H. Little, who has racked up a lot of TV experience since his days of working on Halloween 4. There’s also another Halloween project Little would like to work on and has even pitched: a direct sequel to Halloween 4 that would see the return of Danielle Harris and Ellie Cornell as Jamie and her foster sister Rachel!
The subject of Halloween came up while Little was speaking with our friends at Bloody Disgusting to promote his memoir Still Rolling: Inside the Hollywood...
