Might be the only person who had never read the book or seen the movie before I came across this show on Netflix. First, I was not sure about their chemistry immediately but this is a slow burn and by the 2nd or 3rd episode I was rooting for them, hard.
This was a great show that made me laugh and certainly made me cry. It was so well done and the acting is quite impressive. For those lamenting that this was an unnecessary remake - a series allows the viewers to get a full, in depth picture of the characters and their stories, which is always difficult with a film. Also, I wouldn't consider t a remake as much of a second adaptation of a book.
Perhaps I loved it so much because I'm new to the story but...Watch it.

I haven't read the book, but I did watch the film when it came out and while I loved that, I enjoyed watching the series as well. I felt like they've shown us a bit more of Emma and Dex's moments that weren't really there in the movie (probably because of the time constraint). The story will obviously be the same as the movie because they're both based on the same book, but the series does have some extra scenes that weren't in the film. I also thought both actors had great chemistry, not sure why the other reviews didn't think so, but I could feel the attraction and tension between them as well as the beautiful friendship the characters share. My heart did break for them too; this story gets so real and relatable in so many parts, which is why I love it so much.
I've seen the male lead playing a very different character in the White Lotus, so it was nice to see how he pulled off this role so well too. I did not like Dexter as much in the movie, but in the series, your heart goes out to him. Excellent performance by Leo Woodall. Also, he's very good looking. The female lead was great too, could see the yearning and longing in her eyes.
There's hardly any bittersweet and beautiful romantic content being made anymore, so I was thrilled that they made this series. Give it a shot, it's lovely!

I AM A MESS.
What a beautiful and heart-wrenching story. I haven't been this emotionally gripped by something like this in a long time. I'm usually quite the tear-jerker. But this... my heart is in pieces.
I thought it'd be another typical romance, conventional for the likes of a genre. But no. I was moved by her, by him, by them. All the ranges of human emotions were treated and truly lived. The actors were perfect, the chemistry incredible, the music absolutely on point, the writing *chef's kiss*.
This 14-episode format is perfect to convey all there was to convey, not too long not too short, not too fast not too slow.
Just watch it and enjoy.

Wow - the story of One Day was finally adapted in a way that truly captured the spirit of the book, and in some ways excelled it. I read One Day after graduating many years ago, I was really touched by the story. The film was ok but didn't do the story justice for me. Who knew what I really wanted (and needed) was this limited series format.
This was beautifully done. It captured the spirit of love, life, heartbreak, the enuui and challenges of life. I watched this over 3 days, though if I didn't work full time - I would have binged it in one day. That being said - I think it's best to watch it in parts, because this show captures the different chapters of life and how they intertwine to make one's person's life so beautiful. I could imagine it would be even more intense if I watched it in one day.
Watching One Day reminded me that life can be heartbreaking, lovely, exciting, thrilling, scary, but most importantly wonderful and adventurous, especially if you are willing to take a risk when it comes to love. In the way Dexter and Emma finally meet on the penultimate day at the end of university, just before their graduation, and have a significant impact on each other's life indefinitely- loving each other throughout the years as friends, both near and from afar, weaving through the different chapters of life and growing up and trying to figure out life and the purpose of it.... As well as finding one's function (in layman's term: work that suits you), I think we all know that love is the most important thing that gives our lives meaning - and that love comes in so many forms - whether it's familial, romantic, friendship.
There are so many moments that touched me when watching this show. I have been on an emotional rollercoaster and have the empty boxes of tissue as proof! The acting from the main leads who portrayed Emma and Dexter was superb, and the supporting cast were fantastic too - a special shout out to the actors who played Dexter's mum and dad, Tilly, Ian, and Sylvie. Truly, the whole cast was superb and the show captured significant moments of life through the lens of one day - because really, everything in all of our lives happens in one day, as all we ever have is today, some days can be monotonous and some can be significant in a positive or negative way.
The show will take you on an existential journey - it's definitely taken me on one. I will also be fishing out my book to read (or purchasing it again if I have lost my copy). Thank you for this gem of a show...I will definitely rewatch again, but only when I am ready to get back on the emotional rollercoaster.

Didn't expect to go to bed at 4 am but it is what happened. I couldn't let it go and I NEVER binge usually. I was: ok, just one more... one more... one more... Couldn't let it go.
The character are engaging, the story captivating, the acting sublime and the music brought me back to those years. Might be that I was about the same age on the same timeline.
Impressive all over. Leo Woodhall prestation is incredible. Those 2 are amazing actors, not a doubt. So intense and light at the same time, Writing was on point while visually pleasing. All over a perfect dosage of what we rarely find in cinema nowadays: difficult topics, events and feelings addressed with elegance and grace.

I'm new to the story so not coming in with any pre conceived ideas on how I think the characters should be cast in my minds eye. I loved the nostalgia and the soundtrack is great, it could be my Amazon music playlist, it's a beautiful story thats wonderfully acted. The chemistry between the two main actors is sublime. I think there would be a miscarriage of justice if there isn't plenty of nominations come awards season. Leo Woodall does a great job with a character that could be very unlikable in other hands and what can I say about Ambika Mod's portrayal as Emma? Just perfection, I think one of the best and most engaging performances I've seen in a while. Also I should add a tremendous cast outside the main two characters, I was so invested I needed to know what happened to the likes of ian. Can't praise this show enough, a must watch.
Honestly if it wasn't Leo as the main lead I think I would've turned off after a couple of episodes. I really enjoyed the book and although I didn't love the film, I certainly enjoyed Anne Hathaway playing Emma and remembering disliking Dex a lot!
This series definitely puts a slightly different spin on the story, or maybe it's the actors and how they've portrayed Emma and Dex. I didn't like really Emma in this, she was overly judgmental, patronising and so negative. I was always on Dex's side whereas in the book and film, I didn't like him much....again maybe this is because Leo is such a fantastic actor in my opinion.
If you haven't read the book or seen the film, maybe I can see why some have given higher ratings but I have to agree with the low stars that the chemistry wasn't really there for me, not until the very end anyway.

One of the best things I've seen in a while , Binged it over the weekend, brilliantly acted , their magnetic chemistry pulls you in and makes you feel as though you were right there with them. And with a soundtrack so sublime , it had me laughing, weeping and smiling, with a perfect level of nostalgia and incredible acting that makes you binge in the entire show in one sitting. Love how they portray friendship and love and the end is absolutely as heart-breaking as in the film and book. One of those shows that will stay with you for a while after it's finished. Just brilliant.
If you like depth, if you like love, just watch it.

Firstly... all the bad reviews here have been written by absolute numbnuts, who clearly do not have the emotional intelligence to understand such grownup brilliance! And brilliance is exactly what it is!
Brilliant writing Brilliant acting Brilliant casting Brilliant music score...
It transported me straight back to the late 80s. Had me smiling fondly at the clothes... and those hairdos! Then into the 90s and all those perfect tunes.
But the raw, gut wrenching angst, of missed moments, bad timings and unspoken truths throughout this beautiful love story, totally grips you, with every episode.
It's funny, sad, charming, intelligent, and oh so heartbreaking... just have the tissues ready!!

I'll admit that at first, I agreed with some of the other reviewers about lack of chemistry with the leads. In my opinion, the series started out a bit disjointed and choppy. A few of the early/middle episodes too. But the last third of the episodes really are what made me connect more. Emma had gone from least favorite to favorite and I was really surprised. Her development really flourishes throughout. I'm glad I stuck with it because the ending really was impactful. I binged this series in one day and I enjoyed being wrapped up in these characters lives. It was a beautiful and fun escape with so much of real life represented. Great series.

When I saw this title on Netflix I thought "One Day" sounded familiar. It reminded me of this Anne Hathaway film I've never watched but I've seen in passing a million times over the past 10+ years. Lo and behold, the two are based on the same novel.
Coming into it blind, I was not expecting to be as blown away as I was. Seriously, I ended up binge watching the entire series in one sitting yesterday. I can't sing enough praises about it. The story is beautiful and touching. Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall were spectacular, especially Leo Woodall. After making me shed tears I didn't know existed and (parasocially) fall in love with Dex myself, I am such a fan of Leo and his acting now. I felt just about every emotion possible, in the best way possible.
It's made clear early on that when Emma and Dex meet they come from very, very different worlds. Personally, I think casting Ambika Mod was a brilliant move; not only was her acting amazing, but also I think casting a POC as Emma added a whole other layer to the differences between the two and the beauty of their love story that I wouldn't think achievable in the 2011 movie version with Anne Hathaway playing Emma (I should also add I've never read the novel. So, I'm uncertain if Emma was presented as a POC in the book, but if she wasn't, I truly can't imagine it being meant to be any other way). Mod and Woodall have chemistry that is off the Richter scale, and if you're reading this, yes, you should go watch it right now if you have not already!

This was a great series. I saw the original movie years ago, so I found this to be a great remake. I binge-watched it in one day!!!!
I think the two lead actors were great together, they have a rather sarcastic chemistry, perhaps not everyone understands that. I usually don't like British shows, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I never read the novel so I can't compare it. Great story telling though, I found all characters in the series to be great. Heartfelt story. I cried a little, because ultimately you never know what's going to happen in life and how it will turn out for you. Give it a shot.

Only once in my 57 years on the planet had I watched a piece of TV that will stay with me forever. Now it's twice.
I was skeptical about this programme as I thought it would be lightweight and clichéd. How wrong I was!
One Day is quite simply one of the best portrayals I've ever seen of true soul aching, star crossed , deep and real love.
I read the book years ago but my goodness seeing the story unfold in this way in short episodes was something else. It starts slowly but it needs to to really convey the passing of time in the relationship between Dex and Emma.
Be warned.... It will break you. Cried until I couldn't breathe.

Certainly better than the film starring Anne Hathaway. And if it can be possible to be better than the book it is adapted from -then this miniseries is. Somehow this adaptation.does justice to the.beautiful writing of David Nicholls through the script and the delivery of dialogue from the lead actors Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall with an equally talented supporting cast.including Eleanor Tomlinson and Joely Richardson. The first couple of episodes are slow and the casting of Emma as a girl of Asian origin is a deviation to get used to. However, around episode 4 the story has gained momentum and Ambika owns the part of Emma. I had to binge watch the whole series and it left me emotionally exhausted. One of the best, if not the best drama I have enjoyed this century.

So confused by all the high ratings! Binged, but I almost gave up after a couple of episodes because the characters were annoying and it seemed an unrealistic, mismatched relationship. I honestly don't think a girl like Emma would have put up with Dex's narcissistic, self sabotaging behavior. They made him TOO unlikable in the beginning...but about halfway through when they mellowed him out a bit, the show took a turn and redeemed itself to be more enjoyable and even realistic and touching IMHO!. The acting was ok, but they needed a better script and directing. I give the first half 5 stars and the second 6.7 stars. (could've shortened this a lot too)

I enjoy the series... BUT the movie with Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess is one of my favorite movies of all times, and I think the series was a little off.
The story and the way it was told was great. The problem is the actors! For me Leo Woodall as Dex was perfect, I think he was even a more likeable Dex than Jim Sturgess, but Ambika Mod as Emma I don't think was the best choice, she's not funny and a little clumsy like Emma from the movies, she's not that likeable, always had this expression of disgust that make her look like she doesn't even likes Dexter as a person.
The thing is, and this is why I didn't love the series: THEY DIDN'T SELL ME THAT THEY WERE BEST FRIENDS, I didn't believe them. The relationship they had through the entire series didn't show that like the movie did, and the series had plenty of time for it and fail. I didn't felt at all the love and that complicity you have with a best friend, that is what was lacking on the series in order for it to be great and I think that was in part because of the lack of chemistry between the actors.

I was excited for this mini series, and I did actually expect to enjoy it but was severely disappointed.
From the onset, there was zero chemistry between emma and dex, and i don't know if this was due to the actors themselves or the writing. Actually, I do know. It has to be the actors, because One Day already had a wonderful adaptation that took these two characters and created something fully fleshed and beautiful from their story.
This however, did not. Half the time it didn't even seem like em and dex wanted to be around each other. Lee who played Dex looked bored and had absolutely none of his charm, and Ambika who played Em always seemed pretty much annoyed and disgusted by him. All of Emma Morley's kind and well meaning nature was lost on screen because the way the lines were delivered by Ambika were full of venom??
Sorry but where exactly was a romance meant to flourish here? It's like there was a puppeteer goading them to be together when they clearly don't belong, and the actors were just....acting this out with no real feeling but because they had a job to do.
I was unconvinced by this adaptation and it left me feeling empty and annoyed. I rarely looked forward to them being on screen together which is quite something since it's about THEIR love story lol.
If you want to watch an adaptation of One Day that really does the job and has actors who fully flesh out the characters of Dex and Em and make US fall in love with them, watch the one with Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. It's wonderful.

TLDR: The first 3 eps are very average, we were so close shutting it off but it gets better from there and ends up being a very good series.
I can totally understand why people are saying there isn't much chemistry between the 2 leads because in the first few episodes there really isn't. They don't seem to be a good fit and they're always joking sarcastically which isn't exactly "romantic".
A classic rom-com plot device is to have the leads hate each other at the start then they inevitably come around and of course fall in love. Here they were sort of "meh" from the start with her clearly having more feelings for him as evidenced by her actions and him taking her for granted.
From ep 4 or 5 it is very good. A nice chill and fairly realistic (maybe not too relatable as I'm not a privileged pretty boy from a wealthy family but that's not a dealbreaker) depiction of a couples ups and downs over about 14 years. Sounds gripping I know, but there is enough drama and twists to keep it interesting and to keep us immersed.
I have actually been thinking that character development has been lacking in movies for awhile now, it's like it has become an afterthought. But to be fair 1.5 to 2 hours really isn't long enough for character arcs + plot + action +resolution.
That's where these series shine because they can fully flesh out every character and you feel like you know them pretty well by the end.
If you're looking for a chill but well paced, well produced, well acted, well made little show then this is recommended.

I read the book many years ago and it immediately loved it. It's one of those that will stand out. No surprise, it's also popular to among filmmakers.
Emma loves Dexter. Emma loved Dexter before they even met, as she had had a crush on him during university years. The two then become friends and go on a journey together. The story is essentially about relationships: friendship, romance, marriage, divorce, being in love and the myriad of emotions and feelings that go with it.
Ambika Mod was an excellent choice to play Emma: she is pretty, but not that classical beauty, witty, opinionated and blunt. It's exactly her bluntness and cynicism that make her socially awkward at times. Dexter, a good-looking, popular boy, while quite superficial, he also has a good grasp of character - played excellently by Leo Woodall. The two characters have great chemistry on screen.
The structure of the storytelling is brilliant: it covers around 20 years of their lives from graduation day til their late 30s and early 40s, but only telling it though one day: 15 July. While each episode is only about half hour and it shows 1 year, it is enough for the whole story to unfold slowly in front of you. This structure (or mini-series) also allows to explore the characters more and unpack their emotions.
People come into your life for a reason, for a season, or for a lifetime. The story of Emma and Dexter, who met at their university graduation, is one that will capture your heart. Emma came into Dexter's life to make him a better man.
