One of Hulu‘s biggest original shows of the year premieres this week. Based on a true story that has already confused and compelled millions, “Good American Family” is coming at a time when there certainly is not a shortage of great, worthwhile shows on the air. Whether or not it will be able to rise above its competition and emerge as a must-see addition to this year’s already packed TV slate remains to be seen.

It is impossible to envision the "Stargate" franchise without Dr. Daniel Jackson, the brilliant archeologist who made intergalactic travel through Stargates possible. In Roland Emmerich's "Stargate," James Spader played Jackson as an explorer with tender curiosity, the kind of person brave enough to do the right thing in the face of evil. This endearing bravery is also an integral part of Jackson's character in "Stargate Sg-1" and parts of "Stargate Atlantis," brought to life by Michael Shanks. Although Shanks initially mimicked some of Spader's acting quirks to make his version of Jackson feel grounded, his incredibly ranged performance gradually helped etch the portrait of an increasingly complex protagonist. After all, Shanks' Jackson takes many forms in the "Stargate" shows, from doppelgangers in alternate realities to manipulated vessels for antagonistic beings. In each iteration, Shanks' dynamic performance shines bright.

Exclusive: Saving Hope and Burden of Truth showrunner Adam Pettle has joined a newly formed content arm at Canada’s Vanguarde Artists Management.

Pettle, also an exec on CBC drama The Borough, will work alongside Tina Horwitz and Jay Horwitz at Vanguarde Pictures, which will be based in Toronto and focus on developing scripted content for cable, broadcast, streaming and podcasts.

Tina Horwitz, who founded Vanguarde Artists Management, will be Co-Head of Vanguarde Pictures alongside Jay Horwitz.

“This is a very natural progression for Adam and for us collectively,” said Tina Horwitz. “We’re lucky to have had some very rewarding relationships working with clients as producers, and we look forward to giving these efforts more oxygen.”

Aircraft Pictures is teaming up with Dolphin Entertainment to produce a new feature adaptation of the 1986 sports drama, Youngblood, with rising filmmaker Charles Officer (Akilla’s Escape) on board to direct. The film is slated to begin principal photography in early 2023.

Youngblood follows hockey prodigy Dean Youngblood, who joins the Hamilton Bulldogs and discovers he must face off against toxic behavior on the ice and within himself, to fulfill his dream of being drafted into the National Hockey League. The original film, distributed by MGM, starred Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves in his feature debut, and has since become a cult classic among hockey fans.

Josh Epstein & Kyle Rideout, Seneca Aaron and Officer penned the script for the new film, which will be distributed in Canada by Photon Films — being made with the financial participation of Telefilm Canada and the Talent Fund, as well as Ontario Creates and the Shaw Rocket Fund.

A new feature film based on the 1986 sports drama “Youngblood,” this time centering on an African American hockey prodigy, is in the works from Aircraft Pictures and Dolphin Entertainment. As much as we try to pretend it's not, television recasting is almost always a big deal. When stage performers get recast in a play, or characters get written out between movie sequels, it's bearable because these types of stories have a natural end point that helps audiences feel some closure about the character who's gone. Yet for TV shows, which encourage binge-watching that blurs the lines between seasons, the change can be jarring and distracting.

The spectrum of effective recasts isn't so much from terrible to great as it is from wildly noticeable to slightly unobtrusive. Whether it's the sudden appearance of scruffy, brown-eyed Daario Naharis on "Game of Thrones," the revolving door of Bobby Drapers on "Mad Men," or the depressing Aunt Viv switch-up on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," recasts usually leave something to be desired.

Studio Babelsberg, the historic German studio that recently hosted “The Matrix Resurrections” production, has been acquired by Tpg Real Estate Partners.

The company, which is part of global alternative asset firm Tpg, first revealed plans to acquire a stake in the studio in September via Trep’s acquisition of Babelsberg’s main shareholder, Filmbetriebe Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (Fbb), which was controlled by Carl L. Woebcken and Christoph Fisser. As part of that deal, Fbb launched a public tender offer to acquire a majority of the shares in Studio Babelsberg, which went through in October.

All closing conditions of the transaction have now been fulfilled, the companies have said, with Woebcken and Fisser continuing to hold a minority stake in the studio.

Christmas in July will return to Hallmark bringing Crashing Through The Snow, starring Amy Acker and Warren Christie, to the lineup.

The annual summer movie celebration will kick off Friday, July 9 and will run until Sunday, July 31. Crashing Through The Snow will make its Hallmark debut Friday, July 10 at 9 p.m. The film centers on Maggie (Acker), who joins her ex-husband Jeff (Kristian Brunn) and his girlfriend Kate (Brooke Nevin) for a Christmas getaway in Aspen, where she meets Kate’s brother, Sam (Warren Christie).

Crashing Through the Snow is from Through the Snow Pictures Inc. Stan Spry, Eric Woods and Ryan M. Murphy are executive producers. Anthony Fankhauser is co-executive producer.

This year’s lineup will also include a 2020 Movie Marathon, Soap Sunday and Countdown to Christmas Greatest Hits, which will feature holiday movies including The Christmas Ring and Crown for Christmas.

Exclusive: Newcomer Ainsley Seiger has been cast as a series regular opposite Christopher Meloni, Dylan McDermott, Tamara Taylor and Danielle Moné Truitt, in Law & Order: Organized Crime, and Charlotte Sullivan (Rookie Blue), Nick Creegan (David Makes Man), Ben Chase (The Last Thing He Wanted) and Jaylin Fletcher (Snowpiercer) are set to recur in NBC’s Svu spinoff series.

The drama, now filming in New York after a brief pause earlier this month due to a positive Covid test, will premiere April 1 at 10 Pm as part of a crossover with Law & Order: Svu at 9 Pm that same night.

In Law & Order: Organized Crime, Elliot Stabler (Meloni) returns to the NYPD to battle organized crime after a devastating personal loss. Stabler will aim to rebuild his life as part of a new elite task force that is taking apart the city’s most powerful criminal syndicates one by one.

Fox has picked up Canadian legal drama “Diggstown” from Entertainment One.

Created by Floyd Kane, and starring Vinessa Antoine, the series from Canadian public broadcaster CBC follows Marcie Diggs (Antoine), a star corporate lawyer who reconsiders her priorities and moves to work in a legal-aid office after her aunt commits suicide following the pressures of a malicious prosecution. Among a new group of ragtag lawyers, Marcie is driven by one thing: to never again allow innocent lives to be destroyed by the justice system.

Fox has swooped for seasons 1 and 2 of the drama. The acquisition marks the latest Canadian pick-up by a U.S. broadcaster — a trend that has grown in popularity in the last year as the Covid-19 crisis has stunted production Stateside but has had less of an impact north of the border.

Exclusive: Daniel Gillies, known for his role in The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, has signed with Buchwald for representation.

Gillies joined the CW’s The Vampire Diaries in the second season as Elijah Mikaelson, then went on to reprise the role in all five seasons of spinoff The Originals. He also starred with Katharine McPhee in Lifetime’s original movie The Lost Wife of Robert Durst and in Canadian supernatural medical drama series Saving Hope.

Gillies can currently be seen in the Netflix series Virgin River, which has been renewed for a second season.

On the film side, Gillies will star in the New Zealand-based feature directed and written by James Ashcroft, Coming Home in the Dark, based off the award-winning short story by Owen Marshall. Gillies previous work includes Spider-Man 2, Bride & Prejudice, Captivity and Broken Kingdom.

Hulu series Utopia Falls takes a future-set sci-fi premise and injects with a pop culture explosion of music and dance.

Utopia Falls may, upon first glance, seem like an aesthetically clinical future-society-type story, but the Hulu sci-fi series is set to showcase its hybrid genre nature as a paean to the arts, specifically the entirety of a forbidden pop culture of the past. – Let’s just call it Logan’s Run meets Fame.

The 10-episode hourlong series is set in the far future on a colony, focusing on a group of song-and-dance-inclined teens whose worldviews become upended after being exposed to an archive containing a forgotten pop culture panorama of music, literature, etc., resulting in a clash between the newly-edified and those attempting to uphold the traditions of their idyllic existence. Indeed, it’s a time-worn tale of generational clashes told through a sci-fi lens.

Producer Lee Matthews is teaming up with Steve Kearney and Lisa Wang to develop Caper’ble, a 6 x 30′ comedy about young people with disability who are forced to live together in shared accommodation.

The producers are staging a two-day workshop at Arts Access Victoria in South Melbourne, starting tomorrow, led by Kelly Lefever and supported by Film Victoria.

The concept was created by Matthews and Kearney, who are collaborating with lead writer Alistair Baldwin and story consultant Eliza Hull.

Baldwin and Hull have lived experiences of disability, as have the other workshop participants Olivia Muscat, Chris Bunton, Anna Seymour and Imaan Hadchiti.

Matthews tells If he decided to join forces with Kearney and Wang because he’s convinced that will enable Aussie producers to best compete in the new global landscape.

It’s that time of year again — the chestnuts are roasting, the marshmallows are toasting, and the Hallmark holiday movies are airing multiple times a week from now until the end of the year.

Of the 40 new original movies Hallmark is rolling out this holiday season, 24 are part of its 10th annual “Countdown to Christmas” event. The other 16 will air on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.

Some of the original movies have aired since the end of October, which can be streamed on Hallmark Movies Now. The rest of this year’s holiday programming, like “Christmas at Dollywood,” starring Dolly Parton and “Merry & Bright,” starring Jodie Sweetin, will continue to roll out on both channels until Dec. 28.
