During the first 10 minutes of John Mulaney’s interview for Rolling Stone’s “Last Word” column — where pop-culture icons reflect on their work, success, and the lessons they’ve learned along the way — he holds forth on the following topics: Eurovision, the campy, annual global pop-song contest; the Songwriters Hall of Fame; and the memoir of Jimmy Webb, the songwriter-composer behind “Wichita Lineman” and “MacArthur Park.”

It's nearly March, and with the days getting longer, that means spring is in the air, and there are plenty of new movies and shows to binge-watch from the comfort of your living room. Netflix has an impressive list of titles arriving on the service in March, including The Electric State, a big-budget sci-fi adventure film directed by The Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame) and starring Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) and Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy). Shonda Rhimes (Bridgerton) returns with another exciting new series, The Residence, starring Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black) as a skilled detective who must solve a murder in the White House. After the success of Everybody's in LA last May, John Mulaney is bringing back the format with the new weekly live show, Everybody's Live with John Mulaney.

Nothing brings out the stars quite like a Saturday Night Live Five Timers Club meeting. So when Martin Short joined the club this week, SNL put together one reunion after another as a parade of cameos came out to celebrate.
Short, a former cast member, finally joined the illustrious club this weekend. He first hosted in 1986 and has become SNL's "Mr. December" as each hosting turn has come during the holiday month.
The combination of Short's fifth time hosting, the Christmas episode, and this being SNL's 50th season created the perfect recipe for cameos. And SNL over-delivered in the cold open and in the process, organized several TV and movie reunions for fans to enjoy. In no particular order...
Paul Rudd and Martin Short represented Only Murders in the Building. While everyone (including us here at Last Night On) expected Steve Martin to show up, Martin Short quickly nixed those expectations.

Tom Hanks opened the Christmas episode of “Saturday Night Live” on Saturday donning a five-timers jacket as he prepared to induct host Martin Short, noting that he created the club himself in 1990. But he was far from the last celebrity to show up to usher Short into the exclusive club as the episode featured the most-star-studded five-timers sketch ever.
As the “SNL” cold open continued, the cameos flowed: Paul Rudd, Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Kristen Wiig, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, Melissa McCarthy, John Mulaney and Jimmy Fallon all showed up.
Hanks addressed the popularity of the club, saying it eventually became “an ingeniously lazy way to avoid writing a monologue.”
When Fey entered, Short quipped, “You are one of the rarest things in Hollywood, a writer who’s attractive enough to be on camera.” She shot back: “And you’re one of the least rare things in Hollywood, a loud man.

Searchlight Pictures new movie, Lunik Heist, will have a cast that includes two Oscar winners and a three-time Emmy winner. Variety reports the Cold War-era film will star Jared Leto, Lupita Nyongo and John Mulaney.
In 2014, both Leto and Nyongo won Academy Awards for their performances in Dallas Buyers Club and 12 Years a Slave respectively. Mulaney is a three-time Emmy Award-winner, having won two Emmys in 2023 for his special, John Mulaney: Baby J, and one in 2018 for John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City.
Lunik Heist is a caper that is based on a true story and is written and directed by Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse co-director Kemp Powers. It focuses on the American government and its plot to try to steal a Soviet spacecraft in 1959 during an expedition in Mexico City. Lunik Heist is based on an article that was published in the MIT Technology Review written by Jeff Maysh.

John Mulaney may have packed up “The Sack Lunch Bunch,” but he’ll be back on Netflix next year in a big way.
The standup comedian is getting his own live variety talk show on the streaming service; it will premiere in early 2025. Mulaney will host the show, co-showrun it, and executive produce though his Multiple Camera Productions.
The rest of the details remain under wraps, though here at IndieWire we do have one strong suggestion: Mr. Music (Jake Gyllenhaal) as bandleader.
Mulaney and Netflix tested this whole thing out earlier this year with six episodes of “John Mulaney’s Everybody’s in L.A.,” a live show that was part of the 2024 Netflix Is a Joke Fest. He’s also debuted three of his standup specials on Netflix: Last year’s “Baby J,” 2018’s “Kid Gorgeous,” and 2015’s “The Comeback Kid.” And then of course there was the excellent...

NBC's long-running late-night sketch comedy show "Saturday Night Live" returned over the weekend for its season 50 premiere, hosted by "Hacks" star Jean Smart. But as the show greeted a new season, it also said farewell with a memorial tribute to Tom McCarthy at the end of the episode.
The name and face might not be familiar to general audiences, but McCarthy was a familiar face at 30 Rockefeller Center, the home of "SNL" and its parent studio NBC. McCarthy, who died over the summer at the age of 62, was a former United States Secret Service agent who spent the last 11 years of his career working as NBCUniversal's Senior Vice President and Global Chief Security Officer.
It was the latter role that formed his most direct connection to "SNL." McCarthy acted as an intermediary when the Secret Service opened a file on comedian John Mulaney, a former writer for the...

Editor’s note: This post has been updated to include more information on how the Lead Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series categories expanded.
To say these past five years have been a rollercoaster for the television industry would be an understatement. Through a global pandemic and a full work stoppage as the WGA and SAG struck for fair wages, we have seen the amount of TV shows vastly expand and contract, making each annual set of Emmy nominations feel fresh (even if some shows still win every year.)
Barely giving us a chance to breathe after the postponed 2023 Emmys happened just this January, the 2024 Primetime Emmy nominations tell a whole new, post-strike story where some of the shows that have been on the nominations bubble for years finally popped. Meanwhile new series, which usually have a premium on awards nominations, did not fare as well as expected.

We can’t get enough of John Mulaney these days.
After winning his third Emmy last year for writing his Netflix stand-up special “Baby J,” where he spoke candidly (and hilariously) about his stint in rehab for addiction, the former “Saturday Night Live” writer has risen from the ashes like a comically witty Phoenix.
In the Emmy race once again this year in multiple categories, most notably for guest comedy actor for his performance in the brilliant episode “Fishes” from FX’s second season of “The Bear” and outstanding talk series for the Netflix live smash “Everybody’s in L.A.”
On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Mulaney discusses his experience and perspectives on Los Angeles’ identity, his creative processes, and whether he’ll host the Oscars. Listen below!

There’s a moment in the first episode of Everybody’s in L.A., John Mulaney’s delightfully chaotic live Netflix special, in which Mulaney asks special guest Jerry Seinfeld why he decided to make his Pop-Tarts origin movie Unfrosted (which was released on — you guessed it — Netflix the same day Mulaney’s special aired, because there’s nothing more on-brand for a special about Los Angeles culture than cross-promotional synergy) .
“I don’t know. Because they let me,” Seinfeld responds, referring to Netflix. “Probably the same reason why you’re doing this.

Los Angeles is not the first city fans would associate with comedian John Mulaney. That would be Chicago, his hometown and the backdrop to innumerable childhood anecdotes in his stand-up act, or New York, where he broke out as a writer on “Saturday Night Live” and shot a special at Radio City Music Hall. But L.A. is where Mulaney now lives; it’s also currently home to the second iteration of Netflix Is a Joke, a massive, weeklong comedy festival organized by the streaming service as a show of genre dominance. (Netflix stand-up head Robbie Praw used to run programming at Montreal’s vaunted Just for Laughs event and has essentially created a West Coast version.) And so we have “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA,” a weeklong special event combining studio segments, pre-taped sketches and man-on-the-street interviews into a sort of pop-up talk show.

Break out Tom Cruise’s famous coconut cake, the wait is finally over. “Hacks,” TV’s funniest comedy about comedy, is back after a lengthy hiatus. The third season picks up a year after the events of Season 2, which saw Deborah (Emmy winner Jean Smart) fire her writing partner, Ava (Emmy nominee Hannah Einbinder), following the successful release of her comedy special so Ava could finally begin developing her own career.
The new season, the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Max, is as sharp and funny as ever as the two friends find their way back to one another when Deborah decides to have another go at hosting a late-night show. The enviable list of guest stars for the nine-episode season includes J. Smith-Cameron, Helen Hunt, Christina Hendricks and Christopher Lloyd. Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. Jack Axelrod, the actor who played the role of Victor Jerome on General Hospital, has died. He was 93.
Multiple reports indicate that Axelrod died on Nov. 28 of natural causes in Los Angeles.
Axelrod was featured on the ABC soap for 40 episodes between 1987 and 1989. He had previously made guest appearances in Kojak (1977), Hill Street Blues (1984), Dallas (1983), The Judge (1986), Dynasty (1987), Outlaws (1987) and Night Court (1989).
“I had the pleasure of spending a lot of time with him in his last years, as he had no immediate family,” representative Jennifer Garland said in a statement to EW. “We spent much time outdoors, where Jack loved to sketch, read news articles, and recite Shakespearean sonnets.”
Following his stint on General Hospital, Axelrod went on to play Arnie Zimmer on three episodes of Knots Landing between 1989 and 1990. Guest appearances would follow on shows like Murphy Brown (1992), Everybody Loves Raymond (1999), Boys Meets World (1999), Good vs Evil (1999), Jack & Jill...

If you're looking for a whole lot of laughs, find out where you can watch all of the John Mulaney specials. The former Saturday Night Live writer stepped into the spotlight with his first televised comedy show in 2009 and evolved into one of the industry's most recognizable voices. In 2018, Mulaney made his feature film debut by voicing Peter Porker/Spider-Ham in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, a role that elevated his status within pop culture. However, Mulaney is perhaps best known for voicing the anxious teenager Andrew Glouberman in Big Mouth, a Netflix show that co-stars his frequent collaborator Nick Kroll.
Mulaney also hosted Saturday Night Live five times between 2018 and 2022 and made headlines in 2021 upon being romantically linked to actress Olivia Munn. On the surface, Mulaney appears to be a family-friendly comedian, but his acts often include provocative jokes. He makes sharp observations about the entertainment industry and endears himself...

John Mulaney is revealing the actor and singer who rejected his Saturday Night Live jokes during his time writing for the sketch comedy show.
On a recent episode of Hot Ones, when asked what hosts had the worst reaction to one of his sketch pitches, the comedian recalled Josh Brolin and Mick Jagger not being fans of some of his jokes.

John Mulaney, the guest on this milestone 500th episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the most popular and respected comedians of his generation. He’s a 40-year-old comedian, writer, producer and actor who already has to his name a Peabody Award and 18 Emmy nominations, two of which resulted in wins.
Mulaney, who was born and raised in Chicago, landed a writing job at Saturday Night Live at just 25. There, he co-created, with Bill Hader, one of the show’s most beloved characters, Stefon; and he has often since returned to the show to host the show, becoming a member of its “Five-Timers Club” whose almost annual appearances, to quote The New York Times, “have become one of the show’s more enjoyable traditions in this current era of its history.”

Trevor Noah recently stepped down from “The Daily Show” after seven years as host, hired in 2015 when previous host Jon Stewart decided it was time to exit.
Had things gone another way, however, it would have been John Mulaney who took over for Stewart, as the comedian revealed during a recent appearance on the “Basic!” podcast.
“It was shortly after the ‘SNL’ 40th anniversary,” Mulaney told hosts Doug Herzog and Jen Cheney.

John Mulaney is back on top of the stand-up comedy world following the release of “Baby J,” his new Netflix special that digs into his recent addiction relapse and subsequent return to sobriety. The special has earned rave reviews for the honesty and vulnerability Mulaney displays, with many viewing it as a warning about the dangers of American celebrity culture.
Mulaney’s press tour to promote the special has seen him take a trip down memory lane, recalling his rise to prominence and some of the high profile opportunities that he missed out on over the years. Appearing on Doug Herzog and Jen Chaney’s “Basic” podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter), the comedian said that he was considered as a potential host of The Daily Show after Jon Stewart vacated the job in 2015. John Mulaney is answering questions about being asked by Comedy Central executives if he was interested in hosting “The Daily Show” when Jon Stewart bowed out in 2015.
During a recent appearance on Doug Herzog and Jen Chaney’s “Basic!” podcast, Herzog — who was president of Viacom Music and Entertainment Group, which oversaw Comedy Central, until 2017 — asked Mulaney if he recalled the conversation he had with then-president of Comedy Central, Kent Alterman, about potentially taking over. “I think we were floating your interest in that and you were very lukewarm as I remember,” Herzog said.
Mulaney explained that he ultimately passed because, in part, his Fox sitcom “Mulaney” had just been canceled after only one season.
“It was shortly after the SNL 40th anniversary. I had a sitcom on Fox. They aired all 13 [episodes] but it was canceled. It didn’t do good numbers,” Mulaney said. “I remember going to dinner with Kent.

Baby J is Mulaney’s third Netflix stand-up special following The Comeback Kid (2015) and Kid Gorgeous (2018). His variety special John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch premiered on Netflix in 2019.
The show, directed by Alex Timbers with music by Talking Heads’ David Byrne, was shot in Boston’s Symphony Hall in February 2023.

"Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" is one of the most inexplicable movies in recent memory. It's a sequel to a much-maligned movie that came out over a decade ago. It's subtitled "The Last Wish" and billed as the end of an era despite only being the second movie to star Antonio Banderas' swashbuckling kitty. Its star-studded cast includes the likes of not only Banderas, but also Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, John Mulaney, Harvey Guillén, and Salma Hayek Pinault.
The movie has also gained a tremendous amount of acclaim since its release in theaters in December, picking up an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film and earning glowing reviews, including one for IGN in which /Film writer Rafael Motamayor compared it favorably to The X-Men franchise high point "Logan," a comparison that caught on in a big way throughout the movie's theatrical run. /Film's own review, from Josh Spiegel,...

In the niche world of comedy touring, Mike Berkowitz has always been “the guy.” Over his 21-year career, the agent has been a go-to dealmaker in the live entertainment space, diversifying the income of star clients and launching digital crossovers.
Berkowitz, who co-heads WME’s comedy group, first distinguished himself by tapping into the lucrative college market. He also blazed a trail for new acts to reach stadium-level stardom in a landscape where only the likes of Eddie Murphy and George Carlin once played.
The sector has exploded in the past decade, and Berkowitz has been at the forefront. In 2022, he booked and shepherded production on Bill Burr’s 31 million-grossing tour, as well as Kevin Hart and Chris Rock’s co-headlining shows. He sent out John Mulaney (50.2 million) and Amy Schumer (9 mil- lion), the latter for her first tour in five years. Next, he’ll map out dates for Ramy Youssef,...

Photo: 'Hacks'/HBO Max There have been many shows about comedians and stand-up comedians on television, from ‘Seinfeld’ to ‘Mulaney’ and ‘I’m Dying Up Here’. Most of these shows focus on male comics, especially white, male comedians, and their perspective on the world. There have not been many comedy shows about female stand-up comedians or even examine the female perspective, something which the new HBO Max show ‘Hacks’ seeks to fix. 'Hacks' - The Premise ‘Hacks’ follows Jean Smart as Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas comedienne and QVC host who is struggling to maintain her relevancy with younger audiences. In an effort to keep her career afloat she hires a 25-year-old comedy writer who cannot get work anywhere else named Ava (played by Hannah Einbinder) to help freshen up her material and appeal to a new generation. The two end up learning from each other and Deborah decides to mentor Ava.

Writer-comedian John Mulaney will host NBC’s Saturday Night Live on March 2, joined by musical guest Thomas Rhett. The announcement was made during tonight’s SNL telecast hosted by Don Cheadle.
This will be the second hosting stint for former SNL writer Mulaney whose first turn in April 2018 was well received, as was Mulaney’s recent appearance on Weekend Update alongside Pete Davidson (photo above).
Mulaney is one of only three former SNL non-cast member writers to host the show, along with Larry David and Conan O’Brien.
Mulaney, who is part of the voice cast of Netflix’s animated comedy series Big Mouth, headlined his own short-lived Fox sitcom Mulaney and won an Emmy Award for writing the 2018 comedy special John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City.
