Etymology 1
Pronunciation
Letter
э • (e) (lower case, upper case Э)
- The thirty-first letter of the Russian alphabet, called э (e) or э оборотное (e oborotnoje), and written in the Cyrillic script.
Usage notes
- The letter э is used word-initially and after vowels to represent /e/ not preceded by /j/.
- It may also be used to show that the consonant preceding /e/ is hard, but in the vast majority of cases the normal letter е is used instead. Э only occurs in the names of letters (see below), in the words мэтр (mɛtr), мэр (mɛr), пэр (pɛr), сэр (sɛr), and otherwise when reflecting English /æ/ as in кэш (kɛš), рэп (rɛp), фэн (fɛn). It is somewhat more common in transcribing foreign proper names.
Noun
э • (e) n inan (indeclinable)
- The name of the Cyrillic script letter Э.
- Synonym: э оборотное (e oborotnoje)
