Default The Deep Blue Sea - July 24, 2012

"Rachel Weisz - in what has to be the performance of her career, and there have been lots of good ones."
- Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

"The movie is a museum of emotions, brought to contemporary life through the director’s artistry and his leading lady’s fire. Here, they show us, is how people felt, and hurt, in another time. Their love and pain can touch us today."
- Richard Corliss, TIME

Set in post-WWII London, The Deep Blue Sea is a British romantic drama featuring Rachel Weisz (The Mummy, The Constant Gardener) and Tom Hiddleston (War Horse, The Avengers).

Directed by Terence Davies (The House of Mirth), the film is adapted from the play by Terence Rattigan.

Music Box Films will release the film on Blu-ray and DVD on July 24, 2012.

I'm super excited for this release. One of my favorite films of the year. Weisz won't receive an Oscar nomination because the film's low-profile release early in the year, and it will be a criminal snub.

Rachel Weisz is one of only a few actresses that I will consider just about anything that they do.

This one seemed to get a lot of critical praise, but, while it was not expected to make a ton of money, those who saw it didn't seem to like it nearly as much as the critics.

I was DONE with the Bourne movies without Damon until they cast Rachel, so I'm looking at this one as a likely holiday pick-up.

I'm buying 2 movies this month that I didn't plan to because the BB upgrade in save made them $14.99, so that's going to have to do it. But I will probably add this movie to my collection at some point.

I almost wish they had changed this film's title, lol. Even though the play predates the Renny Harlin film by 47 years.

The comments below every version of the trailer on YouTube, for instance, are nothing but everyone's variation on the, "Wait, where are LL Cool J and the sharks?!" joke.

Best Buy isn't carrying this locally. The only place that has it is Barnes and Noble and they want $34.99 for it. Anyone know about some coupons for B&N? Otherwise, Amazon it is.

I found this cheap at Costco and decided to give it a try. This is not a movie for people who don't like slow moving or depressing films. Although it is slow (and short on sharks), I liked it quite a bit. Rachel Weisz is excellent in this - I was really surprised by her performance, maybe because I'm more used to seeing her in run-of-the-mill popcorn flicks. The filmmakers did a great job of recreating a melancholy postwar 1950s London. I confess that I did get a little restless due to the slow pace, but the movie ended up staying with me for a while after it had ended. Worth a blind buy? I'm still not sure, but I believe it's also streaming on Netflix.

Great performances, but horrible pacing IMHO as I rented it when it was released. 6/10 in my book and definitely worth a rental. The PQ is mediocre as well as everything is filtered like you are looking everything through a thick fog.

I enjoyed Anna Karenina a little more due to the pacing
