USA The Terror / Little Shop of Horrors (1960-1963) (Film Masters)

Film Masters will be releasing a a Special Edition Blu-ray featuring a double-feature of Roger Corman films, The Terror (1963), and a bonus film Little Shop of Horror (1960). Extras include the second part of a Ballyhoo Motion Picture documentary (Part one included with Beast From Haunted Cave release), and a new audio commentary track for each film.

Quote:
Bonus Materials
  • 'Hollywood Intruders: The Filmgroup Story: Part Two'; an original Ballyhoo Motion Pictures Production
  • Full length commentary for 'The Terror' by C. Courtney Joyner and Dr. Steve Haberman
  • Full length commentary for 'Little Shop of Horrors' by Justin Humphreys and Special Guest
  • Full color inserted booklet with original essays
  • Featurette by Howard S. Berger provides a fresh look at 'The Terror'
Quote:
The two sides of Roger Corman are represented with The Terror (1963) and The Little Shop of Horrors (1960). Corman's Gothic, spooky side is on display in The Terror, an atmospheric horror tale of a French soldier whose encounter with a ghostly woman leads him to a mysterious castle full of dark secrets. The pairing of a youthful Jack Nicholson as the soldier and veteran Boris Karloff as the castle's owner make The Terror a memorable example of Corman's mid-sixties Goth period. Though Corman is credited as director, several others took a turn behind the camera, including Nicholson himself, Monte Hellman, and Francis Ford Coppola. Meanwhile,Corman's more whimsical side is on display in The Little Shop of Horrors. This legendary cult film features a bumbling florist's assistant who creates a giant plant that happens to crave human blood. The usual Corman stock company is on hand, including Jonathan Haze and Dick Miller, plus a cameo by Nicholson as a dental patient with a high threshold for pain.

Not as excited for this one because I already have both films on Blu-ray, but I suppose they both could be improved on.

Weird double-feature though, I feel like both of these film could have been the primary feature in a release. Little Shop being added as a "bonus film" seems wrong.

I wish that Film Masters could access the vault elements housed at MGM, but I doubt that will happen. The MGM vault elements for DEMENTIA 13 were utilized for the Vestron Blu-ray, but that was probably due to the involvement of Francis Ford Coppola and Zoetrope.

Hoping for the best. Too many of these public domain horror titles get smothered in DNR. Don't let me down, Film Masters! Kinda funny to see Little Shop of Horrors treated as the additional feature when it's easily the more popular of the two, lol.

An MGM spokesperson has stated that the MGM vault element have not been accessed for this new transfer.

I wonder why and what a shame! But with a new transfer, we can only hope for something better than what HD Cinema Classics, and The Film Detective gave us. Looking forward to it.

I would hope they could manage to put the two trailers on there as well.

Licensing costs to utilize the materials. There is a reason why public domain titles are the bread and butter for these releases - cost savings.

The film detective put out a great copy of THE TERROR already. Will be interesting to see if better. I dont think LSOH had a great release yet

Historically both of these movies have gotten shite transfers, with the exception of the Film Detective's (whom Film Masters is associated with) release of the Terror which was amazing compared to all prior releases of it - very little DNR etc. If it's that same transfer, The Terror should look really good.

I would assume LSOH is a weak transfer, hence its billed as a throw in

Unlike Gila Monster and The Terror, which specify the film elements used, Little Shop just says "new HD master".

The Terror looks miles better than the copy I currently own. Little Shop doesn't look too different from the Legend Films release

Can't really judge the DNR on the screencaps. The framing is different. The site review notes some missing frames on the Legend release.

That may be true, but considering these are promoted as "newly restored," I expected better.

The Terror looks pretty much the same and likely the previous scan was slightly tweaked. The DVDBeaver review of the Film Chest and Film Detective releases:

Both films badly need new scans and competent color grading.
