Oh dear oh dear. So they stuffed up recent comms; that's all that happened -- nothing actually changed adversely in the browser itself. It's been clarified already, & furthermore disabling #telemetry & #ai is elementary, both directly in the UI, & also in about:config, after doing which, even for the most Qanony conspiracist, what actually is the terrifying danger? Furthermore, Thunderbird is not even part of Mozilla anymore, & were entirely unaffected by any of this storm in a teacup. It's hilarious to observe humans behaving like stampeding cattle. 🙄🤦‍♀️

: after updating I checked all settings. Nothing was added, AFAIK (I've optimised the config of my iPhone for privacy & security).

Obviously settings for iDevices in the EU may differ from non-EU because of GDPR.

What makes you think that Apple Intelligence was re-enabled, so that I can make sure that I've not overlooked something?

This is how to move a government system from a proprietary software suite to a Free Powerfull OpenSource Suite without telemetry

County DE
Province Schleswig-Holstein

An important aspect is also that the tech giant that they were locked into, is forcing artificial intelligence upon these places, where leaks of information, due to the ridiculous and myticulous telemetry, are an absolute no no

Isn't it about time we start rallying against #proprietary #firmware already?

From every #EV and #car being a glorified #telemetry machine, to every chip out there basically harboring #SecretSauce with the "trust me bro" guarantee attached.

Neither #US interests, #Chinese interests or private interests should hold so much power. No one should.

All firmware; I repeat, ALL FIRMWARE should be #OpenFirmware. The firmware isn't open? #Ban the #product outright.

So for some of you that think the verbage on the #Mozilla #Firefox is enough, to me - and to many others - it is hard to trust them anymore.

People had a problem with the #Pocket affiliation, people had a problem with the #telemetry, people had problems seeing the new #ad system as privacy safe, and people had a problem with the new verbage in the #ToS. These issues are compounded.

But also, as #primeagen has pointed out, making a modern browser is complex and expensive.

How do we fix that?

I moved off #firefox and onto #waterfox. Some things I discovered that I really like -

1. All #telemetry is turned off, and the options are disabled, so there is no way to turn them on.

2. It comes with native side tabs support, so there is no need to install Sidebery or the like. When you open side tabs, the top tab row disappears automatically (which was not possible to do in Firefox). There are some nice options like an option to pin the current tab automatically.

3. Drag drop files works again! My firefox install had this annoying bug where I couldn't drag files from the desktop to a web page. This works flawlessly in waterfox.

4. Installation was a breeze with flatpak. I copied over my profile from firefox, and everything worked out of the box, including #DRM (e.g. netflix).

I also tried #librewolf and DRM did not work out of the box with it. I overall much prefer waterfox.

10:10 - What? #gnome has #telemetry program? Didn't @thelinuxEXP meant the #fedora telemetry program, or there is exists something im not aware of? Anyway, it would be cool to know what these #gnome_extension are...

As a side note, do I would love to #blur_my_shell, but it visibely reduces smoothness of my desktop (240Hz refresh rate), is it fault of my configuration, or common thing with the extension? I got addicted to high refresh rate and cant now go any lower ;-;

well that's fuckin frustrating

apparently caffeine on macos phones home a fuckton

anyone else have an alternative that doesn't have telemetry?

I have only seen limited evidence that it actually helps developers in any meaningful way. The only examples I heard was when developers realized through telemetry that most of their users are still on outdated versions.

What data you collect? What will you use it for? Or are you just collecting data en masse on the off chance it might be useful later? If I saw a real plan, I might be okay, but usually it is just too nebulous.

Do you consider telemetry (both opt-in and opt-out) in FOSS products as support towards development? Or is any kind of telemetry unaccetable for you?
And do you actively turn it on/off?

Strictly asking about FOSS!

#telemetry #foss #freesoftware #poll

  • Yes, it's support and I turn/leave it on. (50%, 3 votes)
  • Yes, it's support, but I turn/leave it off. (16%, 1 vote)
  • No, it's not support, but I turn/leave it on. (0%, 0 votes)
  • No, it's not support and I turn/leave it off. (33%, 2 votes)

My 5-liner to disable #windows #telemetry

An even better alternative: use #linux

Did you know that #Apple #macOS by default stores your local Spotlight searches and uses them to improve their service?

This option is NOT accessible from the obvious location of "Privacy & Security" but instead from "Spotlight". #privacy #telemetry #datacollection

EDIT: Apparently this option applies to all Apple devices, including iPhones, iPads and the like. I would suggest turning this off on all of them.
