Hands up in the air for #TuneTuesday, with #ShowUsYourHands. 👐
The first song that came to mind, probably helped by the recent #BowieADay listening party, was Rock 'n' Roll Suicide, by David Bowie.
It builds up to a crescendo with the refrain:
"Give me your hands, 'cause you're wonderful."

Before I continue with the final album, I want to take the opportunity to thank @buffyleigh for setting up a neat schedule with all the links, bonus info, further recommendations etc. So thank you 🙏
As someone who only listened to his early works, this journey helped me to understand the genius behind David Bowie.

Listening to Blackstar now feels different than it did 9 years ago espcecially since now I listened to all studio albums.
I feel a bit like listening to late Queen songs, where Freddie was already terminally ill. Bowie and Freddie have a lot in common while being completely different.
I direct comparison to its predecessors this is a return to more experimental paths, but the truth is, this album covers every aspect of Bowie's career. There are bits and pieces from all his albums.
Blackstar brings up all emotions. It is a the grand finale of an outstanding career.

After finishing all 26 David Bowie studio albums, there is only one thing left to do: my #DavidBowie studio album ranking.
Please bear in mind that this is a rather loose ranking as I listened to most of the albums only once.
Oh, and there is one missing in the grid, this one is last.

Towards the end of this career Bowie keeps on getting better and better.
The Next Day, David Bowie's 25th studio album is bloody fantastic, absolutely astonishing!
I am a bit overwhelmed by how good it is honestly. (You Will) Set The World On Fire might as well be my favourite Bowie song. The album currently resides at the #3 spot in my ranking, but it has a strong case for the #2 spot really.
Song 2 gave me strong Tom Waits vibes and hence is my standout track here (next to Set The World On Fire) 👇

Today's #BowieADay album is his 22nd, 'hours...' (1999). This album never really grabbed me, which might explain why only TIL Bowie originally wanted TLC to be the backing vocals on "Thursday's Child"! (Holly Palmer instead joined the band.) Also, I haven't yet heard any of the original versions that were in the Omikron: The Nomad Soul video game soundtrack (link just added to the blog post). Wonder if Bowie was inspired by Trent Reznor doing the Quake game soundtrack?

Looking at the schedule @buffyleigh prepared for this journey I realized that the grand finale would be this Sunday. I take the liberty to be a bit early and finish this Friday, if that's ok for y'all?
Reality hit me hard. Bowie's Reality I mean. This album is fantastic, I was blown away really.
There are so many references to his very beginnings. And the song linked below might as well have been on The Man Who Sold The world.
I love it. I love #Bowie!

We are "auf der Zielgeraden" with David Bowie's 23rd studio album "Heathen".
Bowie basically continued where he left things with Hours. Solid art rock/pop which I'd actually call "Bowie Rock". David Bowie is his own genre by now.
I liked it as almost all of his albums. This song stood out for me 👇

David Bowie's 22nd studio album "Hours" is a complete and utter lie. It didn't even take one hour to listen to it, no, it's only 47 minutes long!
But these 47 minutes are very enjoyable. Bowie abandoned all electronic experiments and returned to pop rock, heck even glam rock at parts.
Yes, I liked that, but I missed the experiments a bit. Bowie is unpredictable.

Loved the album when released. Bowie took us through the album track by track on Capital radio.
Over the years I've constantly fallen in and out of love with it.
Red Sails is great but a rip off of Harmonia's Monza.
Yassasin goes full world music with a Turkish music meets reggae vibe.
Repetition is very atypical Bowie & deals with domestic violence & misogyny.
I still loathe Red Money, a limp reworking of Sister Midnight written with Iggy Pop for The idiot album.

In a shocking turn of events I absolutely liked Earthling on the first listen.
David Bowie goes industrial rock, I didn't have that on my bingo card, but I love it!
The only minor complaint I have are the drum and bass sample intros, they make the album sound a bit dated. But yeah, that was the 90s I guess.
I found myself humming along on my drive to the office, there are so many good songs on it... Dead Man Walking, Seven Years in Tibet, I'm Afraid of Americans (well not afraid, but the orange ones can fuck off) and this one was probably my favourite 👇

Today's #BowieADay album is his 20th, Outside (1995) - his most challenging/experimental/brilliant (and my no. 3 top Bowie). I wrote about the precursor, the unreleased "Leon Suites", on @1001otheralbums.com and recommend checking that out. The tour (and bootleg rehearsal) recordings for this album are also very well worth seeking out - it's my favourite Bowie band with Mike Garson, Reeves Gabrels, and the fabulous Gail Ann Dorsey.

I think David Bowie just lost me with 1. Outside. I was really struggling while listening to it and there was only one song I actually enjoyed listening to, namely No Control.
I guess the intention was to make you uncomfortable while listening to it. Well, mission accomplished. I bet there are times where I am in the mood for this music, but that's not a Monday morning.

The Buddha of Suburbia is a soundtrack and it sounds like a soundtrack. It opens with a rock song but soon develops into a more ambient, electronic direction. It reminds me a bit of David Bowie's Berlin Trilogy.
Hmmmmm 🤔
I am a simple man, give me guitars and I am happy. This is not so much for me.
Also: why is David Beckham on the album cover?

After a rather disappointing "Never Let Me Down" and side project called "Tin Machine", David Bowie returns to his solo paths and brings 90s house, drum and bass and even some trip-hop with him.
This album is another change in direction and I am torn. This is not really my cup of tea although I do appreciate everything he's doing here.
The standout track for me was probably the most experimental one (linked below). It brought back this early 90s feeling when little Thomas was huge into Eurodance (unironically).

I missed #BowieADay for Never Let Me Down (1987), a reasonable album for that point in his career, if not a great one.
But it was the only tour when I could see him live, so that makes it special for me.
That concert blew my teenage mind, from when he was lowered from the giant glass spider onto the stage, singing into a vintage phone.
Peter Frampton and Carlos Alomar in the band.
Five dancers choreographed by Toni Basil (Mickey fame, as well as Bowie's 1974 Diamond Dogs tour).
Songs from Diamond Dogs, Aladdin Sane, Heroes, Young Americans, Scary Monsters.
Thank you to my high school friend Kevin for paying for half of my ticket so we could go.
Today's #BowieADay album is his 10th, Station to Station (1976), the beginning of my favourite run of Bowie albums. When I first heard this album, I played TVC 15 (i.e., Iggy Pop's batshit dream in song form) on repeat, but the long-term standout for me is Bowie's take on Nina Simone's take on "Wild is the Wind". His live performance of this track in 2000 is one of my favourite things ever. Also love that his outfit in the liner notes reappears in the "Lazarus" video.

Yesterday's #BowieADay album was the 1st of the so-called Berlin trilogy, Low, which means today is the 2nd, "Heroes" (both 1977). I frequently listen to Low on its own but rarely listen to Heroes without first listening to Low, so I have both on today. I especially dig the Sound+Vision reissues from the early 90s, as they each have a few additional songs. Also, the Tao Jones Index version of "V-2 Schneider" (i.e., the Earthling tour band doing a drum’n’bass version)!

Today's #BowieADay album is his 16th, Tonight (1984). Just as Bowie regretted making this album, I regretted buying it. So instead I'll flag 2 of my favourite Bowie tracks that were released between this and the next album: "This Is Not America", recorded in '85 with the Pat Metheny Group for The Falcon and the Snowman soundtrack; and "Absolute Beginners", recorded in '86 for the movie of the same name. I LOVE the performances of these tracks in this 2000 show:

Today's #BowieADay album is his 18th, Black Tie White Noise (1993). I can't even explain why, but I fell absolutely in love with this album the first time I heard it, and it's since become the Bowie album I've listened to the most, even though I technically rate it as number 4 or 5 in my top 5 Bowie albums. 90s Bowie is simply my sweet spot, I think it was him at his most interesting, tbh.
Today's #BowieADay album is Bowie's second LP, the 1969 s/t aka Space Oddity. The first/title track is of course one of the most-known/played Bowie tracks (and was his first hit), but I always feel like it doesn't fit the rest of the album, which is more hippy/folk. I find the whole thing rather charming, particularly both of the long, almost prog-like side-closing tracks, Cygnet Committee and Memory of a Free Festival. May have spun this album 3x in the last 2 days. 🤓
Just added this link to the blog post - the posthumously released 'Mercury Demos' is a bedroom tape from 1969 featuring Bowie and his friend John Hutchinson as a folk duo. Sounds REALLY great, has some fun banter, and includes a demo of Space Oddity along with a couple other tunes that make the LP recorded later the same year once Bowie snagged a contract with Mercury.

Today's #BowieADay album is his 3rd LP, The Man Who Sold the World (1970), which had no singles but is best known for featuring the song by Nirvana, apparently. The US release came before the UK release, with artwork depicting the asylum Bowie's half-brother Terry was in instead of the photo of Bowie in a dress. (We'll hear about Terry again in Black Tie White Noise's "Jump They Say".) The 50th anniversary reissue reinstates the original US cover and original title, Metrobolist.
TMWSTW is a mood, very much hitting the spot today (on my 3rd spin this morning). There's a lot going on in the lyrics, with references inspired by Bowie's half-brother Terry who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and Bowie's belief that he would also one day inherit a mental iIlness, as well as a bunch of references to Nietzsche and sci-fi. In Chris O'Leary's entry in his book "Rebel Rebel" on the final track, "The Supermen", he writes:
Today’s #BowieADay album is his 4th, Hunky Dory (1971). Everything seems to have clicked into place with this album, and sets the stage for what is to come - it’s the first glimpse of the glam rock of Ziggy Stardust, foretells the piano-forward Aladdin Sane (and general heavy lifting of Mike Garson from then on), and is the first we hear of Bowie on sax. Almost every track is a favorite, including the often ignored closing track Bewlay Brothers, again inspired by his brother Terry.
Black Tie White Noise
Two things inspired this album, firstly Bowie’s marriage in 1992 to Iman and their experience of seeing the LA riots at first hand the next week. The music sounds bold and confident, and definitively Bowie, featuring guest appearances from Mike Garson and Mick Ronson as well as anticipating the rise of Britpop and 90’s dance. The highlight is a down tempo cover of I Feel Free, which expresses Bowie’s new found artistic confidence.

Today’s #BowieADay album is his 5th, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972). I'm probably one of the few who wouldn't put this in their top 5 Bowie albums. I do love it but, even though I have a crate dedicated to Bowie records, I don't even own a physical copy. I more often listen to the soundtrack to the film that documents the final Ziggy show, with its stunning cover of Jacques Brel's "My Death" being one of my most played Bowie tracks.

Today's #BowieADay album is his 6th, Aladdin Sane (1973), aka "Ziggy Stardust goes to America" (to produce Lou Reed and The Stooges), aka "Haaaaave you met Mike Garson?" Garson's piano playing is a goddamned delight, and happily he'll be a frequent collaborator with Bowie up to his final tour.
Random observation: the title track ends the same way the title track on Genesis' The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974) ends, including lines from the tune "On Broadway".
Today's #BowieADay album is his 7th, Pin Ups (1973), all covers of songs from 45s he had in his hotel room at the time. This is my least listened to Bowie album. Fun fact: news that this album was in the works caused a kerfuffle between Bowie and Bryan Ferry, who had just finished his covers album, These Foolish Things. While he's a bit more polite in a revisit of this entry, I love how Chris O'Leary gets to the point in his original post on the album's single "Sorrow":
bowiesongs.wordpress.com/2010/…
Sorrow
Sorrow (The McCoys, 1965). Sorrow (The Merseys, 1966). Sorrow (Bowie). Sorrow (Bowie, 1980 Floor Show, 1973). Sorrow (Bowie, live, 1974). Sorrow (Bowie, live, 1983). A few weeks before Bowie began …Pushing Ahead of the Dame
Today's #BowieADay album is his 8th, Diamond Dogs (1974). This is when Bowie's discography really starts to grab me, perhaps because it is "jaundiced and cynical" as Chris O'Leary says. Also, this is the album where Bowie really starts to get into the "cut-up" method of writing lyrics, i.e., cutting a page of lines into strips and randomly rearranging them, often with batshit results.
A lot of standout tracks for me, but I really love the "Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise)" triptych.

I had no idea that the title track of David Bowie's 16th studio album "Tonight" is actually a cover of an Iggy Pop song that Bowie wrote.
Anyhow, the version with the great Tina Turner is a standout here. How powerful was this woman, really? Just like Tonight, Tina Turner's Private Dancer was released in in 1984. I was also released in 1984. But back to topic.
Tonight is top notch 80s pop. And that's something I love.
I don't think I ever listened to the studio version of Tonight, only the amazing live version.

"Never Let Me Down" unfortunately just did the opposite. Yes, 80s pop-rock is my thing, but this was a bit too... I don't wanna say generic but 🤷
It was nice background music for sure and the album is far from being bad, but it didn't really grab me. I'd rather listen to Let's Dance or Tonight if I am in the mood for 80s Bowie.
I never listened to it before and I am afraid I'll never pick it up again.
