When I was young, we watched an old elegant yacht anchor down the beach from my grandparents' house. Fancy couples rowed ashore to a picnic in a private gazebo by the water. Barefoot, in cutoffs, we smelled of crab and sunsweat, and imagined the lives we saw from a distance. Long after the ship glided back upriver and out of sight.
Decades later, I went for a sunset dinner cruise on that same yacht. My life is not the one I imagined then.
