This rewrites the tests to use pytest-style tests. They allow to drop plenty of boilerplate!
This allows to drop a bit of boilerplate and introduces proper type hints.

This PR applies some minor improvements to the project. It prepares the introduction of type hints. Nothing should change for the users of
pick. At least, the tests could be left unchanged.
