+1 for having a web based tool which allows translators to track if source strings are added, change or disappear. I've been playing with PoC on Weblate. I asked them for a "libre" licence, let's see if they approve it. The nice thing I found is that it is quite configurable. One possible flow would be:
The pull requests contain references to the original contributor of the translation, which is nice. The new Admin UI message bundles can be translated right away. TODOs I see for the message properties:

I think we can work around the I think once we have the system in place we should formalize some kind of process for community translations. I'd like to have designated maintainers for each language that is supported. And we should likely also add a call to action on the site, blog and contributing documentation. |

Thank you for this update. I've updated Weblate with the new files, and also restricted the languages to NL and DE - the languages between the two of use we are familiar with. I've created one more PR for a cleanup before I switch Weblate to Keycloak's main repository: Once we're happy with the process, we can then add more languages. |

Having Keycloak being accepted as an OpenSource project at Weblate was great, and the code blockers resolved. Even if we could workaround Therefore I'm opening up this for adoption for someone else to drive it. I'm happy to share what I have. If no-one would pick it up for the next 30 days, I'll probably remove the current hosting of Keycloak at Weblate as it confuses people who want to translate. |

@GioviQ - in Keycloak's translations - either by file or by Weblate, in all cases where you want to show a single ' in the UI, you will need to put a double '' in the translation. This is due to the Java Messageformat, where single quotes have a special meaning. See "Within a String, a pair of single quotes can be used to quote any arbitrary characters except single quotes. ... " in the docs for the MessageFormat. If there is a single quote without a matching single quote later, the Message format will show the quote. Once there is a matching quote, then none of the quotes will be shown. It is not very intuitive. I'll see that I add an automatic check to Keycloak. Unfortunately this will only catch those situations after the translation has already been done in Weblate. I read instructions, but it is not clear what to do to add italian, because a lot of messages_it.properties files are already present in the repository, but not in Weblate. |

What you can do today: You can create a pull request to update the messages_it.properties, and then find another Italian native speaker to approve that PR. What we can do when two Italian native speakers commit to be maintainers of the Italian language: We can setup up Weblate. |

I made a PR just to test the process and now I see this PR was not so easy, just like other PRs. But I learnt the "sign off" is just some sort of disclaimer in a commit and if I manually add a line in message like Signed-off-by: GioviQ <my@email> it is the same as using -s option. I discovered now every theme has its own message_{locale}.properties, so one should made the same update to all and that is not efficient. Also managing the project with Visual Studio has some issue and still I don't find a free tool to manage all the message_{locale}.properties at the same time. |

The two previous language maintainers weren't able to review the translations, so we were in the process of removing it. The We're looking for two new languages maintainers that are active on GitHub and Weblate. In the meantime, we'll be accepting pull requests to those translation files in the Keycloak repository directly. |

Weblate create a cleanup PR for CA and removed two items that are no longer available in the upstream #33361. So I'd say we are all set up, and you can check if everything looks alright in Weblate. |

If an export of weblate resulted in that PR, I'd say we're all set, as there are no changes other than those two strings. Should we be listed as admins for Catalan or something like that? I don't see anything like that in Weblate. 🤔 |

How do you review translations ? When I check a translation by going to "Strings waiting for review" I have Save and Continue (which I use as a "ok, reviewed this"), Save and Stay I dont use, Suggest which I did use but when I get back to the Translate pane, suggestions remain at 0. I did a full pass on the 194 strings awaiting review, did a few suggestions (a few translations kept adjectives or some words in the English order, which is reversed in French in the sentence or plural where is none or the reverse, etc.) but I can't get that "Review" conter to move. |

Sorry for the slow reply. I had a look at the administration of Weblate, and it seems that I missed to add the permission to "review strings" to the admins of each language. I have now fixed that, again sorry for missing it earlier. You should now have an additional radio box with "Review state" where you can change a translation to "Approved" (see screenshot below). In the "Tools" menu, is also the option to bulk-edit translations and change their status. Use it with caution. |

Localization process in Weblate I've been struggling with the process that Weblate creates a PR for all languages, and then I didn't know if those changes have been reviewed or not. The more languages we add, the more difficult it will be to get timely reviews once the PR has been created. See below for a different suggested process. I've been digging into Weblate a bit more to learn more about how it should/can be used. I now set up Weblate with the "Dedicated Reviewers" model:
Within the the Keycloak project we want that all translations are reviewed. So the "Any user can edit unapproved translations" is not a good fit. The "Reviewer (aka language maintainers) can edit all translations (including approved ones)" might not be ideal, but I would be ok to give the benefit of the doubt to language maintainers. To mitigate the "Any user can edit unapproved translations", I'd like the language maintainers to go though the current translations and approve those translations that are not yet approved. There is also a "bulk edit" functionality to mark all translated strings as approved if you don't want to go through each one of them. If you are unsure about the "bulk edit" functionality, I can help with that, just ping me. To make the "Suggestions can also be used to suggest changes for approved strings" work, I ask all language maintainers to update their Weblate notifications so that they get notified when there are new suggestions. This would ensure timely feedback to those who submit translations. You can also see the number of current suggestions in the languages tab in the column "Suggestions". To mitigate the "Reviewer (aka language maintainers) can edit all translations (including approved ones)" and "Any user can edit unapproved translations (and submit translations for not yet translated strings)", I'll do spot-checks on all PRs created by Weblate using Google Translate, merge then, and mention the respective language maintainers in the PR. Then the language maintainers should review the translations performed by their fellow language maintainers, and all other changes for unapproved or untranslated keys. Any unapproved language keys in Weblate should be switch to approved by the language maintainers. Let me know your thoughts on this process. Thanks! |

@SaraPristovnik & @mathmul - I see that the onboarding is complete and that you've already updated the first translations. I am also happy to see that you started to mark translations as approved as outlined in the translation process - thank you very much! Those now show as dark green in the preview, while all not-yet approved ones show in light green (see the screenshot below). The updated translations from today were from @SaraPristovnik if I am not mistaken, and I ask @mathmul to review the changes by mentioning you both in the pull request #37681. I will do the same for any future pull request. @robson90 enabled the Slovenian translation for the components "Account UI" and "Admin UI". At the moment those translations are only visible in Weblate, and not yet listed in Keycloak's themes. Once you consider them ready to be included in the Keycloak themes, ping me on GitHub, or open a pull request to update the Thank you again vor volunteering, and ping @robson90 or me if you have any questions with the translation process. |

If you are unsure where to start, I suggest you start with the login. While @robson90 activated Romanian in Weblate so you can start translations, your translation changes will not yet show in Keycloak automatically. Please let @robson90 and me know if you want want to show Romanian in the Keycloak now while you are still translation the themes, or if you want to translate a theme first, and then have show it to Keycloak users. @edwint88 - the functionality you ask for doesn't exist, at least not at the moment. I agree it would be great to have such functionality. I suggest to open an enhancement issue on GitHub describing your needs, and then link it from this discussion so people can join in. We can then discuss how a technical solution could look like. For the time being, looking at the source code might be the way for some of the cases. See for example this file in the login v2 theme with its I would be eager to know how other projects approach this. |

AFAIK I don't think we have a process generates screenshots of a lot of screen automatically (cc: @jonkoops). I read that Weblate could OCR the screens, and thereby connect it to the keys automatically? Note that I expect some false positives, as well only a 80% solution as for example help texts usually don't show in screenshots. I'm still curious to see how good we can get it. I'm happy to provide permissions to someone who wants to evaluate this feature by uploading some first example screenshots. |

No, we don't have any sort of automated tooling for taking screenshots. I also don't think that is the way to go, as it would require significant investment and maintenance. Ideally, keys for localization would have some manner of adding metadata with a description of the key and what the purpose of it is to provide context. For example, GNU gettext PO Files support comments for translators. |

There had been an unfortunate conflict on Friday where not all changes in Weblate were merged to the main Keycloak repository. I'm sorry that this happend. Due to the conflict I had to reset the state in Weblate with the translations that were merged. Unfortunately this reset some of the translations that were performed during that day. I'm still analyzing why this happened. The translations are still available both in the translation memory and in the history. Maybe you can go through them and revert them. For the future, I'll see that I do timely merged of the changes to the main repository. Again, I'm sorry that this happened. |

AFAIK that channel is in the Russian language. So if your Russian is good enough to get 2-3 volunteers involved here, please go ahead and we can add Russian in Weblate. |

That hasn't worked yet on the past, so I recommend against it. It would also mean that you put work into a translation that only become visible when (and only when) there is a reviewer. So I suggest to wait / actively search for a collaborator. |

The Russian language is now set up in Weblate, and I've invited you as team members for the Russian language. All existing translations are already marked as "Approved" assuming they have been reviewed when their pull requests have been merged to the main repository. UPDATE by @ahus1: We decided to use Weblate. See https://github.com/keycloak/keycloak/blob/main/docs/translation.md for the current process on how to contribute translations using a localization platform.
If you want to add a new language to Weblate, we need two volunteers who review the translations and reply to community feedback. Add a comment below or reply to an existing comment to connect with others.
Description
I'm seeing many localization files in this project, it may be more convenient for the translators to work with a translation management tool.
There are several open source options such as Weblate and TranslateWiki.
In addition there are some commercial options that offer free hosting for open source projects such as Crowdin and Transifex.
I'm quite experienced with all these platform and willing to assist with the provisioning if needed.

To improve localization effort and allow busy translators to hop in.
Details
I personally prefer Weblate for localization since it's open source and has tighter git integration.
TranslateWiki is very straight forward and lacks many important functions including TM and advanced context features.
Crowdin is very convenient yet loaded with analytics.
Transifex is pretty good but more complicated to use in terms of context and screenshots.
