This change in names of command line options and configuration parameters would clarify their meanings: right now -extra_vars are named this way because these are additional (extra) outputs (compared to contents of an output file written at the end of a run) and -ts_vars are "time-series". But -ts_vars are also "extra" and -extra_vars are also "time-series" of spatially-variable quantities...

New names clearly identify that one corresponds to reporting spatially-variable quantifies and the other one to scalars.
