Description

(No Model.) KOEGEL. v
PORTABLE PARCEL HOLDER.
' No. 365,389. Patented June 28, 1 887.
I jz wenz'arl 21 223155565; A a Z UNITED 1 STATEs PATENT OFFIC PORTABLE PARCEL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATIbN forming part of Letters Patent No.'365,389, dated June 28, 1887.
Application filed October 21, 1886. Serial No. 216,825. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALois KOEGEL, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Parcel-Holders; andI do hereby declare the following to device for supporting hats, bonnets, or par-- eels on a horizontal or perpendicular bar or spindle, or on a vertical wall or other accessible place, on cars or steaniboats, at the theater or opera, or in hotels, where hooks or other supports are not provided or are not within convenient distance. a
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure l is a perspective of my complete device. Fig. 2 shows the device in use in connection with a wall strip or casing in which the grain runsv horizontally. Fig. 3 shows the device in use in connection with a wall strip or casingin which the grain runs vertically. Fig. 4tshows the device supporting a hat on the spindle of a chair. Fig. 5 shows the device supporting a bonnet on the top bar of a chair-back. Fig. 6 is a modified form of Fig. 5.
A gripper or pair of nippers, having leverjaws A A pivoted together centrally, has its front ends, BB, held yieldingly together by a spring, 0, inserted between its rear ends, I) D.
To the rear end of one of the lever-jaws A a chain, E, is attached, which chain at its other end terminates in a hook, F. To the chain E, at a point about equal distance from its two ends, a small metal plate, G, is attached by means of a swivel-eyebolt, H, a link of'the chain being coupled orlinked into the eye'ofthe bolt, and the bolt being inserted in an aperture in the plate and being retained loosely, so as to form a swivel in the plate by being headed or upturned at its inner end. This plate is provided with prongs for attaching it to wood,
andpreferably with two prongs at each end, the prongs at one end, I, being made thin crosswise of the plate and widened lengthcal, Fig. 3, and the prongs J being adapted for attaching the .plate to wood where the grain is horizontal, Fig. 2. It will be understood that these prongs can be readily forced into any ordinary wooden cleat or board sufficiently to sustain a hat, bonnet, or small parcel.
The grippers A A are readilyopened at their front ends, 13 B, by forcing the rear ends together, and the brim of a hat or-edge of a bonnet or some part of a parcel, being inserted between them, is, on releasing the rear ends, caught and by the force of the spring held in the grippers. The prongs I orJ may then be forced into some convenient support, as the side of a wall, back of a chair or bench; or the chain may be thrown about the spindle of a chair and looped into the hook, Fig. 4, or about the top bar of a chair, and the hook caught around the chair, Fig. 6, or hooked into a link of the chain, Fig. 5, and in any of these several ways the parcel or that will be held, thereby releasing the owner of thelabor and bother of holding it.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
'1. The grippers A, provided with spring C, in combination with chain E, attached to the grippers, and plate G, connected to the chain and provided with prongs for insertion into wood, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the grippers A, pro vided with spring C, with a chain, E, terminating in hook F, and the plate G, connected to the chain E and provided with prongs for euteri ngand attaching the device to wood, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALOIS KOEGEL. \Vitnesses:
G. T. BENEDICT, JAS. B. ERWIN.
