ESO bygger verdens største øje mod himlen

ESO skal bygge det største optiske/infrarøde teleskop i verden. På mødet i Garching i dag godkendte ESO rådet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) programmet under forudsætning af, at fire såkaldte ad referendum [1] stemmer bekræftes. E-ELT vil starte observationer i begyndelsen af næste årti.

ESO’s styrende organ, Rådet, mødtes i dag i ESO’s hovedkvarter i Garching, Tyskland. Hovedemnet på dagsordenen var opstart af European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) programmet – verden største øje mod himlen. E-ELT bliver et 39,3 meter teleskop med segmenteret spejl placeret på Cerro Armazones i det nordlige Chile, tæt på ESO’s Paranal-observatorium.

Alle ESO’s medlemslande har allerede udtrykt stor støtte til E-ELT-projektet (se eso1150). Rådet har i dag stemt for en resolution til godkendelse af E-ELT og dets første række af kraftige instrumenter, dog under forudsætning af, at såkaldte ad referendum stemmer bekræftes.

For at godkende opstarten af programmet skulle to tredjedele af medlemslandene (mindst ti) stemme for. På rådsmødet stemte Østrig, Tjekkiet, Tyskland, Holland, Sverige og Schweiz for at starte E-ELT-programmet. Yderligere fire lande stemte for ad referendum: Belgien, Finland, Italien og Storbritannien. De resterende fire medlemslande arbejder aktivt mod at gå ind i programmet i den nærmeste fremtid.

Efter vedtagelsen af resolutionen er det dog kun det første anlægsarbejde, der går i gang, mens de øvrige dele i projektet først påbegyndes, når de bidrag, som medlemslandene har givet tilsagn om (jf. de finansieringsprincipper, der er godkendt af Rådet i slutningen af 2011), kommer over 90 % af de 1.083 millioner euro, der er de beregnede udgifter (2012 priser).

Ifølge den nuværende tidsplan skal de første store E-ELT-industrikontrakter godkendes og store midler skal afsættes inden for det næste år. Det forventes at give tilstrækkelig tid til, at alle nødvendige betingelser bliver opfyldt: bekræftelse af stemmerne fra Belgien, Finland, Italien og Storbritannien, andre medlemslandes deltagelse i projektet og Brasiliens afslutning af deres ratifikationsprocedure.

”Det er et fremragende resultat og en stor dag for ESO. Vi kan nu komme videre efter planen med dette enorme projekt,” sagde ESO’s generaldirektør Tim de Zeeuw.

De indledende kontrakter i projektet er allerede blevet skrevet. Kort før rådsmødet blev der indgået en kontrakt på at begynde et detaljeret designstudie for det meget udfordrende M4 adaptive spejl til teleskopet. Det har den længste leveringstid i hele E-ELT-programmet og en tidlig start var afgørende. Yderligere oplysninger findes i ann12032.

Detaljeret designarbejde af tilkørselsvejen op til toppen af Cerro Armazones, hvor E-ELT bliver placeret, er også i gang, og noget af anlægsarbejdet forventes at begynde i år. Dette arbejde omfatter forberedelse af tilkørselsvejen til toppen af Cerro Armazones samt udjævningen af selve toppen.

”E-ELT vil fastholde ESO i en førerposition i de kommende årtier og føre til en ekstraordinær høst af spændende videnskab,” konkluderede formanden for ESO rådet Wavier Barcons.

I år 2012 er der 50-års jubilæum for grundlæggelsen af det Europæiske Syd Observatorium (ESO). ESO er den mest fremtrædende internationale astronomi-organisation i Europa og verdens mest produktive astronomiske observatorium. ESO’s aktiviteter er fokuseret på design, konstruktion og drift af jordbaserede observationsfaciliteter for at muliggøre vigtige videnskabelige opdagelser inden for astronomi. ESO spiller også en ledende rolle for at fremme og organisere samarbejdet inden for astronomisk forskning. I Chile driver ESO tre unikke observatorier i verdensklasse: La Silla, Paranal og Chajnantor. På Paranal driver ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), der er verdens mest avancerede astronomiske observatorium til observationer i synligt lys samt to kortlægningsteleskoper. VISTA arbejder i infrarødt lys og er verdens største kortlægningsteleskop, mens VLT Survey Telescope (VST) er det største teleskop, der udelukkende er bygget til at kortlægge himlen i synligt lys. ESO er den europæiske partner i et revolutionerede astronomisk teleskop kaldet ALMA, det største igangværende astronomiske projekt. ESO planlægger i øjeblikket et 40 meter optisk/nær-infrarødt teleskop kaldet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), der vil blive ”verdens største øje mod himlen”.
