We are excited to announce the release of the 2024 Creative Commons Annual Report! Here are a few highlights… 🤝 We expanded the Open Infrastructure Circle (OIC) to ensure consistent funding for the technical and legal maintenance of our CC Licenses. 🎓 As of 2024, we have certified 1,890 graduates across 68 countries through our ten-week CC Certificate program. 🤲 Through a collaborative process that involved staff, key stakeholders, and the CC global community, we launched our 2025-2028 strategy. ⁉️ Is it possible to establish an international standard to improve access to cultural heritage in the public domain? We agree with a group of civil society organizations, knowledge institutions, and Wikimedia chapters that this is not only desirable, but achievable! 🎉 Today, we are proud to announce that the Wikimedia Foundation has joined the newly formed Towards a Recommendation on Cultural Heritage (TAROCH) Coalition. The TAROCH initiative (https://lnkd.in/eXsCsR_g) aims to encourage UNESCO member states to adopt a normative Recommendation by 2029, which champions open solutions and empowers communities to access public domain cultural heritage. 💪🏾 Wikimedia projects and communities are essential for sharing such public domain cultural heritage worldwide. By joining the Coalition, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting community efforts to celebrate and protect cultural heritage, and will advocate removing barriers and adopting open access policies, both internationally and nationally. I'm excited to share this long (and long-in-the-works) paper I wrote for Creative Commons about how Open Culture connects to the history of the Open movement - as well as wider, older, and more diverse cultural practices. Read to find out how and why people have shared things, before and after copyright was even a thing - and how many sectors of societies have valued making cultural heritage and contemporary creativity widely accessible! I discuss how Open Culture can unlock significant parts of the historic creative record, much of which is in the public domain, and support innovative, more globally equitable uses of heritage. Special thanks to Brigitte Vézina for commissioning the paper and offering guidance amid the refined scope of the TAROCH project. Exciting news in the GLAM community! Last week our friends at Creative Commons launched a brand new initiative called TAROCH, or Towards a Recommendation on Open Cultural Heritage. TAROCH is a collaborative effort to achieve the adoption of a UNESCO standard-setting instrument to improve open access to cultural heritage. It is led by representatives of a global, diverse community of organizations and institutions involved in cultural heritage and with an interest in open cultural heritage.
