What to Know

Critics Consensus

Recalling the entrancing atmosphere of Shinichirō Watanabe's past works if not quite matching their high bar for originality, Lazarus is a kinetic anime with no shortage of provocative ideas.

Margaret Lyons New York Times This repetitive yet iterative framing feels like a ritual, and the show is filled with religious imagery and musings about the nature of divinity. Apr 7, 2025 Full Review Melanie McFarland Salon.com Like the space cowboys and ronin searching for purpose in his past series, the personalities populating “Lazarus” are anguished people navigating a broken world... Sometimes vibes are all we’ve got, and it's OK to be good with that feeling. Apr 7, 2025 Full Review Kambole Campbell AV Club Luckily, what hasn’t changed from Cowboy Bebop is Watanabe’s sense of style and interest in using animation to depict and empower people who have fallen through the cracks. Rated: B+ Apr 1, 2025 Full Review Hoai-Tran Bui Inverse Shinichiro Watanabe’s new anime isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s still cool as hell. Apr 8, 2025 Full Review Pete Volk Polygon All those elements work together to create a pure aesthetic treat — even when the story beats feel similar, or the mystery feels too distant, Lazarus remains a thoroughly enjoyable and engaging experience. Apr 7, 2025 Full Review Nick Valdez ComicBook.com Lazarus is an anime that is hitting at just the right time, and just the right climate for it to hit as well as it does. William S Shinichirō Watanabe delivers what the creators of the live action adaptation of his Cowboy Bebop failed to. A spiritual sequel to his late nineties masterpiece featuring a propulsive jazz heavy score from flying lotus, floating points, and others. Well choreographed action sequences, beautiful artwork, and a high concept sci-fi/action-adventure about a ragtag group banding together and hunting for a man trying to end the world.
