Ideogrammic compound (會意 / 会意): 阝 (“mound; hill; raised ground”) + 步 (“step; two feet pointing upwards”). Cf. 降 (jiàng), with two feet pointing downwards.
Etymology
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *l-t(j)ak (“to climb; to ascend”) (STEDT). Compare 登 (OC *tɯːŋ) (Wang, 1923) < *s-tjaŋ, as well as Burmese တက် (tak, “to climb up, get in a vehicle”); see the latter for more cognates.
