In 1644 Tōfukumon-in, consort of Emperor Go-Mizunoo, was bequeathed the old hermitage of Jimyōin Motoko (持明院基子 ?-1644).

She suggested the emperor construct a new temple, and so in 1654 he established Reikan-ji (霊鑑寺) with his daughter Gekkō Sōchō (月江宗澄) as founding head.

Camellia flowers inspire a mind-boggling number of traditional sweets.

The most famous, and one of the oldest (an early version featuring in 'The Tale of Genji'), is 'tsubaki-mochi' (椿餅). Camellia leaves adorn a sticky rice cake, but unlike sakura-mochi the leaves act as decoration only.

😋SAKURAMOCHI🌸
It's that most wonderful time of the year...'sakuramochi' (桜餅) in abundance🙌

'Sakuramochi' (桜餅) begin appearing in stores around the time of Hina Matsuri (雛祭り "Doll's Day" - March 3rd) and are eaten throughout the spring.

😅SPRINGTIME SCHEDULE🌸

The chaos of blossom season is almost upon us, so I thought I'd share some information for guests who have already booked, or are thinking of booking tea ceremony during the busiest time of the year in Kyōto.

During the 'Kaihōgyō' (回峰行) Tendai monks descend from Enryaku-ji (延暦寺) on Mt. Hiei and complete various prayer routes that take them into the city and back to their home temple.
This ascetic practice is undertaken for 1000 days (over 7 years)!

It was a little wet for an outdoor tea ceremony, but blossoms are so fleeting you have to enjoy them while you can.

On a grey day the pink blossoms really sing🥰

mastodon.social/@camelliakyoto… camelliakyoto@mastodon.social - 🌿BUTTERBUR & NANOHANA💛

Spring is heralded in Japan by many different plants and flowers, but one of the most keenly anticipated is 'fuki' (菜蕗), the 'giant butterbur'.

As soon as the shoots appear, they are plucked from the ground and cooked as a delicacy.

I'm sure I am forgetting some blossom or other, so if you can think of any more seen in Japan around springtime then let me know!

And remember, not all blossoms are pink or white...💛💚🥹

Over time the original wafers changed in shape, and bean jam was added as a filling. No longer moon-like, the name was shortened to just 'monaka'.

Monaka (最中) is a popular sweet in Japan, made by sandwiching bean paste between crisp wafers. The wafers themselves come in countless shapes and sizes.

The nearby confectioners 'Itotatsu' are well-known for their 'bear monaka' that change outfits with each season🧸🥰

Rather confusingly, both Jōnan-gū and Fujinomori-jinja (藤森神社) claim to have their origins with Mahataki-jinja.

Fujinomori-jinja likely stands close to where this shrine was founded in 203, but the current incarnation of Mahataki-jinja (真幡寸神社) is located within Jōnan-gū🤔

#Jonangu #城南宮 #Kyoto #京都

Jōnan-gū's origins are hazy at best.

Some say Empress Jingū (神功皇后 ?169-269?), returning victorious from campaigns on the Korean Peninsula, buried her battle pennant and enshrined the god Yachihoko-no-kami (八千矛神) here in 203 in a shrine called Mahataki-jinja (眞幡寸神社).

Shōfu-dō's (松甫堂) 'tsubaki-mochi' (椿餅) is sold exclusively on the approach to Jōnan-gu during plum blossom season. The sweet's slight octagonal shape was inspired by the shrine's famous amulet (protecting against unlucky directions).

One of Kyōto's most photographed pieces of scenery is a stretch of garden behind Jōnan-gū's (城南宮) main shrine. Here winter and spring collide with plum blossoms cascading over fallen camellia flowers...bright dots in a verdant green carpet.

🍑HINA MATSURI🎎

Some time in February families begin to unwrap and display a set of ornamental dolls called 'Hina-ningyō' (雛人形). These dolls lie at the heart of the 'Hina Matsuri' (雛祭り) celebrations on March 3rd.
In English it is known as "Doll’s Day" or "Girls’ Day".

In the Kyōto calendar there are a few times each year when the public is able to rub shoulders with maiko and geiko for a small fee.
During 'Baika-sai' (梅花祭) they serve tea beside Kitano Tenman-gū's plum orchard.
