Karlsruhe Castle at night - before the renovations

Since I took this image in 2010, the castle grounds have been renovated and the fountain no longer exists. All of the landscaping in front of the castle has been changed. This was taken at 10 pm and just after I took the shots, the fountain was turned off for the last time and all of the lights went out.

Crowds on the Beach in Nova Scotia

Taken with a fisheye lens, this has a strange perspective and curves the horizon. The rock you see is really huge, as you can tell by the size of the person at the very end, taking pictures possibly of the seals in the water or out on the rocks.

A swirling river with brownish blue water and foam has some branches that are suspended over the water with a buildup of snow on the top and icicles hanging below, resembling bristles, so that the whole thing resembles a toothbrush or a hairbrush. The long exposure gives the water a silky look contrasting with the sharp looking icicles.

The bottom half of the frame has a predominately reddish tone with sand and pools of water from a receding tide. This is low tide in the place of the highest tides in the world, so this is actually the bay floor. At bottom left quarter is a single person, so far away it's very tiny, possibly digging for lugworms or some other fishing bait. There is a rock formation in the bottom right quarter, which would be mostly underwater at high tide. The upper part of the picture has a raised land mass on the left side, with a thick layer of fog that appears to be pouring over its edge into the water we see in the distance. Beyond that water is a low shoreline. The sky is very heavy with dark grey and blueish clouds broken with a pale sky near the horizon.

"The Sisters" - Lake Kejimkujik - temperature -14° C all day.
plus a wind!

This photograph was taken on a day when the temperature was bitingly cold, with a bitter wind blowing. I had to keep my camera batteries in my underwear. It was so beautiful that I hardly noticed the cold, though and didn't stop until the light failed. The lake was frozen solid and was constantly creaking and groaning, sending eerie sounds through the wind.

It's worth the long walk to get down to the shoreline and along to the best part, beyond where most people go. There you join the seals playing in the water nearby. The water is the Atlantic Ocean is absolutely bitter cold.

Hidden Waterfall in the woods

Off the beaten track, this waterfall is actually not far from the Bay of Fundy, which is within walking distance. It would be almost impossible to find unless you knew someone who told you the way. So don't go looking! LOL!

A two tiered waterfall deep in the woods. There are icicles hanging from the rocks on both sides, and some mosses on the top. Trees are visible at the top of the waterfall. We are at the level of the pool at the bottom, which is surrounded by white snow and ice and whose water is a brown colour, with the white spray of the water part way in it. It is a long exposure and the water has a soft silky texture where it falls, while the icy landscape around it is very sharp.

This is a snowy path leading from the front of the image up and then leading to the right. It is raised between a body of water (dyke) on the left, which is almost out of the frame and a flat, snow-covered field edged with a ditch on the right. There are some reddish brown dried grasses along the path and down both banks and some small trees growing by the ditch. In the distance are larger trees. The sky is a little heavy looking, with dark clouds more on the right down to the horizon, interspersed with some blue sky. The light, which is coming from behind the photographer is a very warm golden setting sun light and the whole scene is peaceful and calm.

Rupert was our first Cornish Rex and I took this photo of him in 2002 while visiting before he was old enough to bring him home. He was showing off to me and his siblings and barely stayed still long enough to get a decent photo. We still miss him. He was a special boy.

Leaping for Joy

This may be bad news for the vole, but it’s good news for the young fox! Although we don’t see the foxes as much as we used to, they are still around and making their presence known now and again. This is always a cheering moment as they seem to be such happy creatures trotting across the field. I have a young friend who particularly likes foxes and this is for her and her family.

Fox on the Hunt


One of the young foxes was hunting a vole just when I happened to be looking out of the
French windows with my camera nearby. The glass, though clean, has softened the images somewhat, but we get an idea of the energy and excitement of the hunt. Clicking on any of the images takes you to the full gallery of foxes and other animals.

We’ve had a busy spring and early summer and I want to share some photos of the family of foxes we have living with us on our property. The litter must have been born in the bushes or woods close to our house, and in the past few weeks we have been watching the young ones enjoying life, playing and tumbling around like all young animals do, in the grass and among the trees and bushes. They are beautiful and so fun to watch.

And more foxes. What do you do when they keep playing in your garden? You have to take pictures! These were all taken in very low light, in the late evening, and at quite a distance, so it’s amazing that they came out at all!

A good size turtle is in a marshy setting with dried brown reeds and bright green stalks around it. It has a black shell and body apart from the patterning on the shell outlined in a dirty white colour, and with the bright red markings at the bottom of the shell and along the scaly legs. We had observed this little bird hanging out on the yew tree outside for some time. I set up the camera and flash close to the bush with the radio remote control inside the house and waited for him to appear. It was a picture of patience as the other 93 taken will attest! I've only ever seen a flying squirrel once, in Kejimkujik Park in Nova Scotia. It was 'flying' around the campsite one night, moving so quickly it was hard to catch sight of where it was each time. This time it stopped to pick up something to eat before taking off again. They spread these flaps of skin between the front and back paws to glide between trees. It is a very foggy winter scene with 7 rows of bare young winter apple trees in an orchard disappearing into the distance ahead of the viewer. There are a few wooden fence posts in the front of the lines of trees and a single pheasant walking its way out of the frame, in front of the trees, on the left. Behind the orderly lines of trees appears to be a wood, which is almost entirely hidden by the fog, so not easy to make out.
