Traces of a morning walk in the Otago Peninsula, north of Dunedin, New Zealand

Take nothing but pictures,
Leave nothing but footprints,
Kill nothing but time,
Keep nothing but memories,

I accept and am a firm follower of these travellers ethos and credos.

An Invercargill principal reports that Seymour's school lunch fiasco is reaching absurdity. They received 600 macaroni cheese lunch packs from Western Australia yesterday and "...about a third were not eaten."

From Western Australia!

How much longer will Luxon allow Seymour to keep up this charade?

Pay peanuts... get slop.

Just a reminder that One NZ (aka Vodafone) have now partnered with Starlink for their mobile service.

If you don't want part of you monthly mobile charge to go to Elon Musk it's really easy to switch over to another provider and keep your current number.

I did that with the families phones on Saturday at Rangiora Spark shop and they even managed to shave $90 of the monthly bill which was a nice bonus. Probably equally easy to do with 2 degrees as well.

Four people charged for the Destiny attacks. Oddly, Tamaki not among them. Four people just spontaneously turned up at a library and terrorised families, I guess.

Following disruptions to a children's event at the Auckland Pride Festival in February, four of the fake bishop's black-clad thugs have been arrested on assault charges including one of Indecent assault. Further arrests are pending.

And a bunch of tramping pictures from January 2023's Around the Mountain Circuit. Which appears to currently not be circumnavigable, alas. Good that we got to do it while it was open; geology seems to strike pretty often. #Tramping #NZ

"Help Replace Stolen School Equipment!"

A South Auckland high school has made a desperate plea to its community after the β€œdevastating theft” of equipment used to maintain its food garden. #NZ #Aotearoa #Givealittle #MutualAid #MutualAidRequest

A Givealittle page set up by Manurewa High School has claimed garden equipment worth more than $11,000 was stolen from its grounds last month, affecting the school’s ability to grow food for its community.

Seemingly oblivious to Tesla's worldwide meltdown, Stuff is running a piece with the headline, "Tesla β€˜working pretty hard’ to sell Cybertruck Down Under".

Yeah, right. In Australia, Tesla sales for January are down 72%. By comparison, BYD sales have doubled in 12 months.

Besides, the Cybertruck is unlikely to conform to regulations in either Australia or New Zealand, same as the UK.

It's too big, it's ugly and it smells of Musk.

A firm contracted by Compass to deliver 125,000 New Zealand school lunches each day has gone into liquidation.

The Libelle Group didn't last long. How far are we into the school year?

If around 350,000 kids are receiving Seymour's slop each day, there's a third of capacity vanished, just like that.

Is it possible that churning out cheap slop at $3 a unit doesn't make financial sense, once Compass have taken their cut?

Ata marie from Ōtautahi! One benefit of the shortening days in NZ is that I’m waking up around sunrise. This mornings there’s also fog across the Canterbury Plains.

UPDATE: @Daveosaurus has found it in record time.

Ok #NZ #Aotearoa sleuths.

Anyone know where this is?

All I know is that it's on the South Island, and it's down 1km of gravel road . I suspect it may be in Otago or Southland but not sure (just because there's a few unpainted tin halls down that way).

Absolutely! That’s exactly the kind of ambition and focus needed if we’re going to put a dent in weeds. No new weeds in NZ's large bush reserves should be the line drawn.

It will be challenging to build widespread support as many weeds are more like cat problems than possum problems (a lot of people still like to plant them). Like NZ’s predatory mammals, starting first with the more widely disliked weeds could make sense, and build momentum from there.

Black Mass - Black IPA
"A careful selection of dark malts and a massive oblation of the finest Citra, Centennial, Chinook, Simcoe and Amarillo create an obsidian black IPA with whip crack bitterness and hop charge packed with grapefruit citrus, spice, resinous pine and dank sativa.

A couple of exciting nature observations from #LincolnUniversityNZ today:

A korimako-NZ bellbird was back singing. They leave campus to breed in the hills over summer. A few come back and spend autumn and winter on campus. Welcome back!

Also, two students saw copper butterflies! Only one had been seen before on campus, back in 2021. We have host plants planted now so we hope they'll stay.

NZ’s glaciers have already lost nearly third of their ice – as more vanishes, landscapes, lives change

As warming temperatures melt glaciers, the ice loss has repercussions for climate and water cycles. This in turn has significant impacts on landscapes, rivers, ecosystems and, ultimately, people and economies

Here's the latest variant picture for New Zealand.

DeFLuQE variants continue to dominate, with XEC.* struggling to break above 40%.

This is quite an unusual picture as XEC.* is already dominant in most places.

The LP.8.1.* variant has mostly been below 10%.
