Interpreting Polish FM’s Proposal For Poland To Protect Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plants

This is nothing but a false pretext for justifying the open deployment of Western troops in Ukraine.

Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski told the BBC late last week that “It’s my personal view that legally we would have the right to self-defence” in helping Ukraine shoot down Russian missiles that allegedly threaten the three nuclear power plants (NPPs) that are still under Kiev’s control. This comes after he told the Financial Times earlier in the week that Poland has the right to intercept Russian missiles in Ukraine if they appear to be approaching the Polish border.

It was analysed here that he was speaking in a personal capacity exactly as Foreign Ministry spokesman Pawel Wronski subsequently clarified and that one of his intentions might have been to present himself as the public face of much more powerful forces that plan to vigorously lobby for this scenario. That interpretation was lent further credence after his latest interview with the BBC in which he explicitly clarified that “It’s my personal view” in order to avoid a repeat of last week’s scandal.

Incoming NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and his team might be more hawkish on Russia, while the Democrats might either retain the presidency in November or allied elements of the US’ “deep state” could provoke an escalation with Russia in Ukraine as revenge if Trump wins. This uncertainty appears to have emboldened Sikorski and the Western anti-Russian hawks who he publicly represents into proactively making the case for openly deploying Western troops to Ukraine in a limited capacity.

The pretext that they’ve decided to promote is protecting the three NPPs that are still under Kiev’s control, which are located in Rivne, Khmelnitsky, and Mikolaev Regions, all of which are west of the Dnieper. The first is in proximity to Poland and occupies territory that used to be under the control of the Second Polish Republic, the second is approximately equidistant between Poland and Romania (but closer to Poland), while the third is closer to Romania.

The NPP in Rivne is barely within the maximum range of Poland’s Patriot missiles if they’re placed on the extreme edge of its border, but it would be better defended through the deployment of those systems in Western Ukraine, while the remaining two would definitely require that. Since Poland doesn’t have any spare equipment left to give Ukraine per its Defence Minister’s candid admission in late August, it would thus be sacrificing on ensuring its minimum national security needs if Sikorski gets his way.

These could either be transferred to Ukrainian ownership or remain under Polish control, the latter of which seems to be what Sikorski was suggesting, ergo why he described it as “self-defence” and justified it on the pretext of preventing a Chernobyl-like disaster that could affect all of Europe. Further evidence of this being his intent can be seen from the fact that Romania agreed to donate one of its Patriots to Ukraine last week, yet Sikorski still insisted to the BBC that Poland should defend Ukraine’s NPPs.

Zelensky also proposed late last month that Poland and Romania shoot down Russian missiles in Ukraine, adding that Polish agreement “would lead to a positive decision by Romania.” Keeping in mind what Sikorski just suggested about Poland defending Ukrainian NPPs, which as was shown above would require the dispatch of more Patriots would likely remain under Polish control, he and Zelensky seem to be colluding to this end in order to obtain US approval for this mission that could then involve Romania.

They and those powerful hawkish forces who they publicly represent realized that few Westerners would support this if it’s only about downing stray drones or missiles that might land in Poland as per the scandal that erupted after Sikorski’s earlier mentioned remarks last week to the Financial Times. Accordingly, they decided to revise their narrative to make it about preventing a Chernobyl-like disaster that could affect all of Europe, hoping that this could imbue their proposal with a fresh sense of urgency.

The objective is to cross another of Russia’s “red lines” by openly deploying Western troops to Ukraine on the pretext of this being about “nuclear security”, after which any attacks against them could be spun as “nuclear terrorism” and exploited to justify deploying more troops and systems to “defend them”. The geography in which the initial deployment would take place only concerns the Western Ukrainian hinterland, but it could expand to approach the Dnieper and then cross it as part of “mission creep”.

This sequence of events would amount to playing a dangerous game of nuclear chicken with Russia due to the lack of trust between it and NATO, neither of which understands the other’s true intentions nor believes whatever their counterpart officially claims them to be. Each suspects the other of aggressive and expansionist plans, which is why the likely outbreak of even initially low-level kinetic warfare between them upon the possibly open deployment of Western troops to Ukraine could easily escalate.

NATO and the US are well aware of these risks, which is why they’ve thus far declined to do what Sikorski and Zelensky have proposed, but their calculations could change for the previously mentioned reasons related to the first’s new incoming leadership at the second’s domestic political developments. There’s also the chance that Russia achieves a breakthrough in Donbass following its potential capture of Pokrovsk, which could prompt panic in the West and thus make a conventional intervention more likely.

While such a scenario might be aimed at securing Western Ukraine or at most bolstering Kiev’s defences in order to prevent Russia from steamrolling through Eastern Ukraine, it could spiral out of control into World War III as was explained would therefore only be done out of desperation and panic. It remains to be seen whether this will unfold, and whether it’ll be done under the pretext of defending of Ukraine’s NPP, but Sikorski’s lobbying shows that some powerful forces are working very hard to have this happen.

Why’s Poland Talking Tough About Possibly Shooting Down Russian Missiles Over Ukraine?

The sequence of events that would have to transpire in order to turn this into a reality are that: the next NATO leader and his team end up being hawkish on this issue; Polish policymakers overcome their differences and agree that it’s worth the risks; and the US gives them the greenlight.

Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski told the Financial Times in an interview earlier this week that “Membership in Nato does not trump each country’s responsibility for the protection of its own airspace — it’s our own constitutional duty. I’m personally of the view that, when hostile missiles are on course of entering our airspace, it would be legitimate self-defence [to strike them] because once they do cross into our airspace, the risk of debris injuring someone is significant.”

Foreign Ministry spokesman Pawel Wronski clarified that these was Sikorski’s own personal views and don’t reflect Poland’s official ones, elaborating that “If we have the capability and Ukraine agrees, then we should consider it. But ultimately, this is the minister’s personal opinion.” Nevertheless, their comments still suggested that this scenario might once again be in the cards under certain conditions despite having earlier been rebuffed by the US, UK, and NATO. Here are three background briefings:

* 17 April: “It Would Be Surprising If Polish Patriot Systems Were Used To Protect Western Ukraine”

* 18 July: “Ukraine Likely Feels Jaded After NATO Said That It Won’t Allow Poland To Intercept Russian Missiles”

* 30 August: “Poland Finally Maxed Out Its Military Support For Ukraine”

The last of these three included Zelensky’s most recent demand at the time to shoot down Russian missiles over Ukraine. He said that “We have talked a lot about this and we need, as I understand it, the support of several countries. Poland … hesitates to be alone with this decision. It wants the support of other countries in NATO. I think this would lead to a positive decision by Romania.” That same analysis also cited Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz’s response to him too.

In his words, “No country will make such decisions individually. I have not seen any supporters of making this decision in NATO. I am not surprised that President Zelensky will appeal for this because this is his role. But our role is to make decisions in line with the interests of the Polish state. And that is what we are making today.” This aligns with what outgoing NATO Deputy Secretary Mircea Geona told the Financial Times in response to Sikorski’s opinion on this issue.

That Romanian official said that “We have to do whatever we can to help Ukraine and do whatever we can to avoid escalation. And this is where the line of Nato is consistent from the very beginning of the war. Of course we respect every ally’s sovereign right to deliver national security. But within Nato, we always consult before going into something that could have consequences on all of us — and our Polish allies have always been impeccable in consulting inside the alliance.”

This context confirms that Sikorski was only speaking in a personal capacity and that neither the Polish state as a whole nor Romania (which Zelensky suggested could take part in this as well) is seriously interested in shooting down Russian missiles over Ukraine. The question therefore arises about what he thought that he’d achieve by sharing his opinion on this seeing as how it’s unlikely to lead to anything. Several explanations exist for why he did so.

The first is that he wanted to placate Ukraine after Poland failed to fulfil its pledge from this summer’s security pact to “continue their bilateral dialogue and dialogues with other partners, aimed at examining rationale and feasibility of possible intercepting in Ukraine’s airspace missiles and UAVs fired in the direction of territory of Poland, following necessary procedures agreed by the States and organisations involved.” Talking tough on this issue shows Kiev that there are still policymakers in favour of this scenario.

The second is he’s trying to craft the narrative that some in Poland want to do more to help Ukraine win but are being held back by rival policymakers and the West, which might be designed to deflect criticism from Warsaw in the event that Kiev suffers major battleground setbacks in the near future. Sikorski has deep lifelong ties to the Anglo-American Axis and is a proud Ukrainophile so he might seriously believe that it serves Polish interests to exaggerate its willingness to do everything possible for Kiev.

And finally, the last explanation – none of which are mutually exclusive – is that he’s presenting himself as the public face of much more powerful forces that plan to vigorously lobby for this scenario upon former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte becoming NATO’s next Secretary-General next month. While the logic behind the bloc’s reluctance to approve such an unprecedented escalation in their proxy war with Russia will remain, some incoming officials might be even more hawkish than their predecessors.

Observers likely don’t have to worry about NATO approving Sikorski’s proposal for Poland shooting down Russian missiles over Ukraine this month since Jens Stoltenberg (who’s against this) is still in office, but they’d do well to closely monitor all the related remarks of his successor and the latter’s team. Even if they openly advocate for that happening, Poland will still informally require US approval before going through with this, and that’s presupposing that its policymakers finally get on the same page about it.

The sequence of events that would therefore have to transpire in order to turn this into a reality are that: Rutte and his team end up being hawkish on this issue; Polish policymakers overcome their differences and agree that it’s worth the risks; and the US gives them the greenlight. Even if the first two are in place, nothing will probably happen unless the third is as well since Poland is unlikely to feel comfortable acting unilaterally without knowing for sure that the US has its back.

It’s here where the on-the-ground dynamics of the Ukrainian Conflict and the outcome of the US’ presidential elections could play decisive roles in determining whether or not the US gets on board. As for the first, the possibility of a Russian military breakthrough upon its capture of Pokrovsk could prompt Western panic and make this scenario appear more attractive to decisionmakers. It could also, however, make them even more reluctant to escalate and risk a hot war with Russia by miscalculation.

Regarding the second, the Democrats might want to sabotage Trump’s promised peace efforts if he wins by carrying out the aforementioned escalation as vengeance irrespective of the conflict’s on-the-ground dynamics. If he loses and there isn’t a Russian military breakthrough, then the Democrats might stay the course with their policy of gradual escalations instead of resorting to a sudden radical one like approving the proposal of Poland shooting down Russian missiles over Ukraine with all the risks that it could entail.

Seeing as how these supplementary variables are beyond observers’ control, as is the sequence of events was detailed several paragraphs before, nobody can say with confidence that the US will ultimately approve Sikorski’s proposal. Like was written earlier, the logic behind their reluctance to escalate in such an unprecedented way will remain, and more Russian on-the-ground gains could reinforce this sentiment. The coming months will show whether these calculations change or not.

"[...]On a rainy September 4, live data from Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) indicated that the seawater being pumped in had a reading of 11 counts per second (cps) - a measure of radioactive disintegration by a detector - while the treated water and the diluted mixture heading for discharge both had a radiation level of 5.3 cps.

"Jim Smith, a professor of environmental science at the University of Portsmouth, said the background gamma radiation level in natural seawater was expected to be at about 10 cps.

"For the seawater pumped in and diluted water discharged, 'you would expect the two readings to be about the same - the gamma radiation added from gamma emitting radionuclides discharged with the waste water is unlikely to change the seawater radiation levels', he said.

"This discrepancy persisted throughout the first round of release that ended last week. The radiation level of the diluted mixture was always lower than the radiation level of the seawater being pumped in, according to Tepco data logs and their tracker on the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) website.

"Tepco's radiation detectors monitor the seawater intake pump, the transfer line the treated water passes through, and a vertical shaft the diluted water passes through called point VI on the tracker.

"'Looks to me like the detector at point VI is reading a bit low,' Smith said.

"The Post asked more than a dozen professors and researchers, some of whom had publicly spoken both for and against the release, to comment on the readings. Of the three who responded, two said that a lack of data surrounding the radiation numbers meant they would not comment.

Different Levels, Different Defenses

It is instructive at this time to note that Arthur Janov once compared the defenses that characterized the youth of the time—the late Sixties, early Seventies—with those of their parents and older people in general and came up with findings that amplify my own assertions here.

“Mind’s Made Up, Don’t Confuse Me With the Facts!”

Specifically, Janov found that older people—clients of his as well as others of whom he was aware—were characteristically more repressed, more split off, more prone to dissociation, more defended and, most importantly for our uses here, tended to use defenses of denial and obfuscation against inner information and impulses. Correspondingly, they tended to use drugs that repressed and blotted out reality, such as alcohol and nicotine; and they tended to be sexually repressed. They were also more compulsive. They tended to suppress their tension and hold it in for all their worth.

“How Can You Have Any Pudding if You Don’t Eat Your Meat?”

Truth was greatly feared, and all attempts were made to fend off incoming information that might threaten the delusional reality set of the conscious mind. This left them open to the characterization: “My mind’s made up! Don’t confuse me with the facts!” which was leveled at them by anti-Vietnam War protesters. In more recent years, it is no wonder they have engaged in a war against education and against Hollywood, as really they are at war with new information. Consequently, Janov found that the dominant mode of reaction, when threatened, was to act out aggressively against the supposed “oppressor.” Like prenates up against an overpowering womb, they are in constant war with overwhelm.

“Peace, Out.”

[strong]On the other hand, he found that his youthful clients—under 30—tended to use defenses of excess, release, and addiction, or to be unusually lacking in defense mechanisms. They were more impulsive. They tended to have weak barriers to incoming information, to be open to negative unconscious content, even at the expense of their self-esteem, and to be tension expressers. They were therefore more likely sexually promiscuous than repressed, [strong][/strong]and they tended to drugs that opened them to information and [strong][strong][/strong][/strong]unconscious knowledge – such as [strong][strong][strong][/strong][/strong][/strong]marijuana and LSD. [/strong]

[strong]Consequently they were less split off from their unconscious truth…though it made them uncomfortable…were less repressed, and, if anything, used defenses of masochism, self-denial, and self-inflicted aggression or depression. Truth was more important to them than emotional comfort. They tended to go out of their way to dig up negative information about themselves, and they accepted the low self-esteem and sense of self-worth that came with that kind of openness to truth. [/strong]

Their delusional reality set — if it could be called that — entailed taking on the worries and cares of the world as their own, since their openness to their own cares and worries allowed them to empathize with others in obviously similar situations. When triggered into their pain, their dominant reaction was to take it inward and to take it out on themselves causing depression. In doing so they showed they would rather hurt themselves than hurt another.

Generation Gaps … Again

I don’t believe you need to be a rocket scientist to see that Janov was discovering an historical — one might say millennial — ”changing of the guard” as regards access to the unconscious, openness to personal truth, and lessening of the tendency to act out early trauma in violent or belligerent ways. The older generation had more tendencies to blame others, to find scapegoats for their ills, and to act out violently on them. The younger generation had more tendencies to look inward and to blame and punish themselves … and to prefer to hurt themselves before hurting another. They would more likely cut themselves than cut another; they would more likely commit suicide than kill.

The youthful generation might also become alcoholic, addicted to drugs, or do something else to injure themselves…rather than act it out on another.

Less Wars, More Suicides

And this “acting in,” as opposed to acting out, is indicated as well in the rise of teen suicides in recent decades. So you might say that the tradeoff we are currently getting is a reduction in the use of wars and racism to solve problems—that is, a reduction in the tendency to act out one’s Pain on others and to scapegoat. But, since the perinatal trauma is still there, and one is even more conscious of it, we have increased suicides. We have not had a world war or dropped a nuclear weapon on people since World War II; but we suffer unceasingly from relatively less loss of life in regional conflicts and the self-inflicted harm of air, water, and food contamination and from radiation poisoning from nuclear power plants. We have not had millions killed in genocides or purges since World War II, but we have suffered lesser loss of life in uprisings for democracy in China, Iran, Syria, Southeast Asia, and the Arab world. We have not had lynchings and racial riots have ceased, but we have suffered less lethal damage from culture and class wars, increased incarceration, creeping fascism, and struggles for economic justice.

[strong]Overall then, less death, more suffering. Less killing in wars, more suicides. Less large scale atrocities, more depression. On a collective level, we are taking our conflicts increasingly inward.[/strong]

As deMause pointed out,

Those considered ‘neurotic’ in each age may often be a higher psychogenic mode than those considered ‘normal,’ only they must stand the anxiety of not sharing the group-fantasies of the age. [Footnote 1]

Away From Hubris: Nature Balances HerSelf

In this part on healing crisis, we have seen how perinatal acting out can be of two kinds: totally unconscious and trance-like, or semi-conscious with at least some access. We have looked at how a progression to more access to one’s perinatal underbellies has led to more acting in than acting out. We have seen how it has led to less violence and more depression.

Suffering Beats Dying.

At this point, one could make the point that the tradeoff is worth it: That individuals suffering more emotional pain and trauma is preferable to the horrors of world war and nuclear or genocidal holocaust…put bluntly, suffering beats dying.

But we are still looking at the situation from the microcosmic scale. We are talking and acting here like we are the only ones on Earth that matter.

This is natural of course, in that this is always the way we have thought of things[strong]—that is to say, as if all things were to be considered around the concerns of humans. This is called anthropocentrism—a form of species-centrism—in which Homo sapiens is considered the reason for the existence of the rest of the Universe. [/strong]

With the Universe as awesomely and unimaginably large as it is, one might wonder at our hubris in our considering things in only this way—that is, from our perspective.

Likewise, with a mind-boggling number of species living or having lived on this planet alone—species numbering in the hundreds of millions, if not trillions—again one might question the validity of choosing the perspective of our species alone in making our analyses.

How ‘Bout We Step Outside?

Yet this is the way we have always done it. And this is the way I have been slanting my perspective so far in this book.

But now let us do something radically different. Let us walk out of ourselves — figuratively speaking — and seek to stand upon that Archimedean point from which we might view the events currently transpiring.

From such an attempted non-species-centric viewpoint let us view this emerging perinatal unconscious as it is currently manifesting in humans. However tenuous our attempt, let us at least try such a new-paradigm viewpoint. For certainly all old-paradigm ones—containing all the hubris of anthropocentrism that they do—have failed in their attempts to save our species and indeed have contributed to such a likelihood.

Let us attempt to see through the eyes of Gaia, now[strong]—from the viewpoint of Earth itself—as we look at how the current human predicament may in fact be an example of Nature balancing HerSelf. With both perspectives in mind, we can have a complete picture. We will return then to look at where there is cause for hope, what we are doing wrong as well as where there are positive trends and forces at work, and how we might let go of the self-defeating and instead apply ourselves to fostering the forces of good going on in global consciousness and the globe itself.

Self-Discovery, Soul-Searching, Psychological-Mindedness, Self-Analysis – Sixties Generation

So, we have taken a look at the need for societies to “do therapy” on themselves, to hash out and process, however messy that might seem to be, the perinatal projections from the unconscious, as they manifest in the tribulations of the times—both profound and mundane. It must be kept in mind that it is the products of nearly the most “advanced” mode of [strong]child-caring—the delegated-release subclass of the socializing psychoclass — who have proved most willing to pay such prices for peace, as for example, in increased soul-searching. In fact they would be later stigmatized for just this quality of introspection, this supposed fault of looking into themselves, through the derogatory appellation, narcissistic.[/strong]

Indeed, Keniston foresaw this when he studied the Sixties generation as college students. Observing the amount of inner exploration they engaged in during their quests for self-discovery, he would describe this attribute in a biased way as “the overexamined life,” and more fairly, for the activist youth, as a “psychological-mindedness” and “self-analysis.” [Footnote 22]

No doubt those who criticized these youth in the past are some of the same ones or their surrogates who, now older, are wrongly castigating the self-analyzing characteristics of contemporary society as the Sixties generation is now in its “triumphant” phase—the time when as adults a psychoclass takes over the reins of society and most strongly influences it. I have already taken note of the tendencies of the right to rile against the collective processing that is happening in their attacks on popular culture and in particular what they call “hollywood.” They express their desire that “such matters” not come to public light, for they deem them “offensive” or an affront to their (oh so delicate) sensibilities. They sense a threat to the precious untruths that prop up their self-destructive way of life, woven through as it is with war, fascism, planetary and planetmate annihilation, and the other horrors mushrooming about them in the postmodern era. [Footnote 23]

These highly defended and fear-minded conservatives, prone to projection, are incapable of appreciating the integrity of an inner-thinking generation like the Boomers are. These outer-minded authoritarians would not get, would outright hate those who “questioned authority” in the Sixties.

These defended entrenched egos would be secretly jealous of and overtly aggressive to a generational emergence that since the Sixties has been psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually working on themselves to be free of inner tyranny. As one of their exemplars, Pat Buchanan, long ago phrased it, “Let it all out? No, leave some of it in!”

Let the Buck Stop Here!

Nonetheless this cadre of kindred Sixties spirits would in their actions declare for the first time in history as a generation, “Let the buck stop here!” And they would seek to turn themselves, and by extension their children and society-at-large, into a more loving, wise, and less acting-out humanity…most importantly, one willing to cooperate rather than war with Nature, or other nations.

If Not Us, Who? If Not Now, When?

What virtually all the folks outside “my generation” never get is the unimpeachable vision we had of the complete and utter wrongness of the path and tendencies of modern times and the abyss toward which civilization was heading. We were proven right, of course, as especially in the last decade we have seen the disintegration wrought of those tendencies on all fronts—political, environmental, personal. The Sixties generation saw modern civilization as being unreformable and needing complete remaking, so that everything we did was an attempt to create reality and culture from scratch, sans tradition.

We had seen normal ways of doing things to be impotent and often dangerous and most importantly leading to apocalyptic endings in our near future. This understanding is what was responsible for all the “non-normal” behaviors my generation displayed—communes, confrontations, clothes, relationships, organics, alternative ways of everything…an entire counterculture. We have been laughed at for essentially being ahead of the curve on the messages of modern events. We have been called crazy for our inconvenient prophecies, virtually all of which are now coming to pass.

While I and my cohorts, to use just one example, spoke out on the dangers of nuclear energy and in particular the insanity of building plants on fault lines, the professional pundits scoffed and boasted they lived near nuclear plants. This was thirty years and more before the world ever heard the word, Fukushima. The examples like this are endless. We saw all these unworkable endings and asked ourselves, “What would be a real way of doing that?” “What would be a workable, sustainable way?” “What would be a sane and happy life, ethic, and lifestyle.” “What would be a loving, peaceful mode of being?”

While we sought to redo culture from scratch, building it on perennial and unimpeachable principles, the threatened elders and the jealous youngers, who would soon enough come behind, poked fun from within the confines of their assured and comfortable wrongness. They called us narcissistic for thinking we could look at ourselves and the world and dare to think we could change it from ancient ways. They thought we were making ourselves important that way, putting on airs, even. Actually we were shouldering responsibility we did not want—yearning for a simpler, less serious time—but which we accepted for the sake of all those who would come after, knowing their very existence depended on our actions. We took faith in the touchstone of love itself—the only thing that did not crumble under examination—and sought to bend all emerging along its outlines.

So our seeming impertinence was born of an inconvenient prompting, an unwanted vision now proving prophetic. It was hardly selfish, as many of the best of my generation paid the ultimate price and are no longer with us or they are imprisoned. It was hardly narcissistic as it was done out of love…for each other, for the peoples of all the world and of all the religions, for our children, for the planetmates and for the Nature of which we learned we were a part, and for the generations unborn.

What others will never get is that our “overexamined life,” our “psychological-mindedness,” our perinatal propensities, and our soul-searching and self-analysis were not about being narcissistic. It was about needing to start everything anew as a rational response to the horrors we saw about us in our culture and in the world… horrors which we were correct in trying to address at the time. For their existence today, because of our inability to be completely successful in remedying them, are bringing about all the political, economic, and environmental armageddons I’ve been discussing in this, and its related, books. And we knew, and still know, that only some change huge and radical will help us, and for that we need to find and stand upon the deepest and firmest of ground within us. That is what we’ve been looking for, are still looking for…only now we have lots of company .

A Drive to Healing

We cannot expect that everyone will heal their birth traumas when they arise into consciousness during periods of peace. However, we can expect—especially now that there is understanding of these dynamics and there are techniques and modalities available for healing them—that some people will!

Furthermore, even the more ritualistic and superficial yet blatant regressions to infancy, birth, prenatal, or even prior to that—for example, as Mayr and Boelderl describe in Europe—are not the indication of a “death drive” or “death instinct” as these researchers claimed. [Footnote 24]

These highly symbolic collective rituals are instead the manifestations of a drive to healing—a drive to regressing to early traumas and to reexperiencing the events [strong][strong][/strong]that occurred then and thus recapturing an integrity of self that existed prior to the dissociation that happened as a result of those traumas. This drive to regression is no more a “death wish” than the mystical or spiritual quest is a “death wish,” and for the same reasons, as Jung correctly admonished Freud a long time ago. And we can expect that more good than bad can come, eventually, from engaging in them. [/strong]

What Did You Expect Peace to Look Like?

In conclusion, when we see blatant collective regressions, by the sorts of people mentioned, to these perinatal dynamics in undisguised, and relatively harmless, social rituals—as described by Mayr and Boelderl, and Lawson—we can expect that, because of their closeness to their unconscious pain, they are likely—even if only a little more likely because of their more advanced mode of child-caring—to have insight into these dynamics and to resist acting them out in a more extreme form, like war, global pollution, and overpopulation.

To put it another way, I would have preferred that Hitler had acted out his craziness by jumping into mosh pits, humming baby tunes, wearing a pacifier…or even engaging in sexual orgies…than the way he did.

So these current signs of blatant regression by youth and others in Europe or the US, or in fact anywhere in the world as in rock concerts, are not signs of an impending war. What did you expect peace to look like? You might call it messy, but it is the scenery of human healing, we should expect to be seeing, on the pathway to an Earth rebirth.

What Might We Expect?

Millennial Promise

[strong]What might we expect from the future? Well if ecological/environmental consciousness and refusal to use projection onto others is accepted as evidence of perinatal access, as I have been asserting, then the current generation of youth and young adults—the Baby-Boomer Echo Generation, also called the Millennial Generation, whose two main concerns, as I have mentioned, have been polled as being the environment and racism—may also be expected to be more open to their perinatal trauma, and hence more likely to resolve it and further the gains of their parents against war and global apocalypse.[/strong]

“A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall”

For, as Janov has pointed out, closer to one’s Pain—one’s unconscious—is closer to being real. And this closeness holds out the possibility both of healing…and of self-destruction.

From the roads and TV screens of America the scenery can often appear bleak. Sure, heavy changes are coming down…but what should we expect? “A hard rain’s gonna fall,” sang Bob Dylan. And that’s what it takes to blossom the spring. Look hard enough, you just might see the seeds of Light amidst the darkness surrounding.

Evidence in Our Collective Dreaming

Next we will take a look at one of the projective systems of our society, specifically, our cinema, to see if it shows evidence of the change of consciousness that we have here been describing as necessary to derail the cycles of war and violence that have plagued our species for millennia uncountable and have led us to the brink of extinction.

Films are both the collective dreams of our society as well as the only truly widely shared method of collectively experiencing a nonordinary state of consciousness. Thus they are telling, in the messages they contain, as well as powerful in their impact on the audience, who in this mild nonordinary state of consciousness are more open to suggestion and to receiving mental impressions and information.

We will look to examples from films of the last few decades for indications that our collective consciousness is actually changing and that there are grounds for hoping that we will be able to stave off apocalypse…creating instead the quantum leap to an Earth rebirth.

“The National Association of Marine Laboratories (#NAML), an organization of more than
100 member laboratories, opposes Japan’s plans to begin releasing over 1.3 million tons of radioactively contaminated water from the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean commencing in 2023. This opposition is based on the fact that there is a lack of adequate and accurate scientific data supporting Japan’s assertion of safety.

"Furthermore, there is an abundance of data demonstrating serious concerns about releasing radioactively contaminated water.

“The Pacific Ocean is the largest continuous body of water on our planet, containing the greatest biomass of organisms of ecological, economic, and cultural value, including 70 percent of the world’s #fisheries. The health of all the world’s #OceanEcosystems is in documented decline due
to a variety of stressors, including climate change, over-exploitation of resources, and pollution.

"The proposed release of this #contaminated water is a #transboundary and #transgenerational issue of concern for the health of marine ecosystems and those whose lives and livelihoods depend on them. We are concerned about the absence of critical data on the radionuclide content of each tank, the Advanced Liquid Processing System, which is used to remove radionuclides, and the assumption that upon the release of the contaminated wastewater,
‘dilution is the solution to pollution.’

“The underlying rationale of #dilution ignores the reality of biological processes of #OrganicBinding,
#bioaccumulation, and #bioconcentration, as well as accumulation in local seafloor sediments. Many of the radionuclides contained in the accumulated waste cooling water have half-lives ranging from decades to centuries, and their deleterious effects range from #DNADamage and
#cellular stress to elevated #cancer risks in people who eat affected marine organisms, such as clams, oysters, crabs, lobster, shrimp, and fish.

"Additionally, the effectiveness of the Advanced Liquid Processing System in almost completely removing the over 60 different #radionuclides present in the affected wastewater—some of which have an affinity to target specific tissues, glands, organs, and metabolic pathways in #LivingOrganisms, including people—remains a
serious concern due to the absence of critical data.

"The supporting data provided by the Tokyo Electric Power Company and the #JapaneseGovernment are insufficient and, in some cases, incorrect, with flaws in sampling protocols, statistical design, sample analyses, and assumptions, which in turn lead to flaws in the
conclusion of safety and prevent a more thorough evaluation of better alternative approaches to disposal. A full range of approaches to addressing the problem of safely containing, storing, and disposing of the radioactive waste have not been adequately explored, and alternatives to ocean dumping should be examined in greater detail and with extensive scientific rigor.

“NAML calls on the Government of #Japan and International Atomic Energy Agency (#IAEA) scientists to more fully and adequately consider the options recommended by the #PacificIslandsForum’s Expert Panel. We believe public policy decisions, regulations, and actions must keep pace with and make use of relevant advancements in our scientific understanding of the #environment and human health. In this case, we believe policy makers have not fully availed themselves of the available science and should do so before making any final decisions on releasing this contaminated water into the Pacific. NAML members are unified in our concern about use of the oceans as a dumping ground for radioactively contaminated water and other #pollutants because such actions can negatively affect the long-term health and sustainability of
our planet.

“We urge the Government of Japan to stop pursuing their planned and precedent-setting release of the radioactively contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean and to work with the broader scientific community to pursue other approaches [like #ClosedLoop systems or binding radionuclides in concerete] that protect #OceanLife; human health; and
those communities who depend on ecologically, economically, and culturally valuable marine
resources. “

"The plan to deal with the 1.3 million tonnes of contaminated water accumulated since the #FukushimaDaiichi #NuclearPowerPlant meltdown in 2011 includes removing most of the radioactive chemicals before it is discharged into the ocean.

"However, the ALPS has been shown to be unsuccessful in filtering out the other 62 radioactive chemicals present in the waste water, according to data from the Japanese ministry for economy, trade and industry (#METI).

"According to METI, around 70 per cent of ALPS-treated water still contained #radioactive substances other than #tritium by the end of 2020, and needed to be #repurified.

"The US-based National Association of Marine Laboratories (#NAML), which represents more than 100 labs, released a position paper in December 2022 [link in comments] that firmly opposed Japan’s plan over 'a lack of adequate and accurate scientific data' about its safety.

"NAML members include some of the world’s most influential marine research institutes, including the #ScrippsInstitution of #Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego."

"In 2002, Tokyo Electric Co. admitted to #falsifying its records of #nuclear inspections and hiding the facts for more than a decade. Ironically, the information came from a #whistleblower at #GE, which helped build the plants and has contracted with TEPCO on operational matters for decades.

"The problems at the tsunami-stricken #NuclearPowerPlant at #Fukushima continue to mount. On Monday in #Japan, another hydrogen explosion shook the plant as the utility and the government tried furiously to stop a meltdown at two reactors.

"This morning the New York Times is reporting that 'experts in Japan and the United States say the country is now facing a cascade of accumulating problems that suggest that radioactive releases of steam from the crippled plants could go on for weeks or even months.'

"If we’ve learned anything from the crisis so far, it’s that the Japan government and its nuclear industry don’t have the smoothest PR in the world. Ever since the tsunami knocked out the plant’s cooling system on Friday and the reactor cores began over-heating, the official word has been confusing, contradictory and downright mysterious.

"The problem was underscored in a most ludicrous way on Saturday afternoon in Washington, when the Japanese Ambassador appeared on CNN with Wolf Blitzter and sought almost desperately to reassure the world that everything was fine. 'No meltdown,' he snapped to Wolf. But, within minutes, the ambassador was contradicted by the head of Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety agency, which told CNN that a meltdown actually 'might be under way.' Hard to reconcile those two points (see this chart on what happens in a meltdown.)

"By now, of course, it’s clear that there’s been a partial #meltdown, and we’re all hoping that the situation can be brought under control and the radiation contained. Yet the impression lingers of, let us say, a failure to communicate. And it’s much worse for people in Japan, who are trying to sort through the conflicting information and monitoring a news media that doesn’t seem to be demanding answers. As my friend Alan Gleason, a translator, editor and jazz musician living in Tokyo, wrote on this site yesterday,

"So far the most sobering and disturbing thing is the inability or unwillingness of government and power company spokesmen to give straight answers about what’s going on, as well as the TV stations’ unwillingness to press them on this…[It seems that] when a man-made disaster, or one exacerbated by human error, occurs, self-censorship kicks in to protect #PowerfulInterests."

Tepco admits leaktightness test falsification

"Tokyo Electric Power (#Tepco) staff manipulated main steam valves to reduce leak rates during containment testing in 1991 and 1992, the company has admitted.

"Tepco admitted the '#DishonestActs' in a press release on 25 October. The company said that during the two annual inspections at #Fukushima Daiichi 1 (Fukushima I-1), plant staff knew that the containment leak rate was too high. When government inspectors carried out the leak tightness test the staff injected air via the main steam isolation valves to reduce the leak rate. It is reporteed elsewhere that the real rate was 2% per day compared to the allowed maximum of 0.45% per day. By manipulating the valve, the rate was reduced to 0.12% per day.

"Tepco said the plant had been shut down for additional leak rate inspections, and an external commission comprising five specialist lawyers had been assigned to oversee the investigation. The company could not say whether 'dishonest acts were conducted in the leakage inspections at all Tepco’s nuclear power stations other than the above-mentioned two inspections'; nor could it say whether other tests at that plant had been #falsified. All the company’s leak tests are now being examined.

"Once again, the power company found itself saying: 'Tepco sincerely regrets and apologises that such dishonest acts were conducted.' Tsunehisa Katsumata has taken over as head of Tepco following the resignation of Nobuya Minami. At a press conference Katsumata said the data falsification was 'the gravest crisis since the company was established', and that the company had lost so much 'it should start again from zero'. Shigemi Tamura is to be promoted to chairman, replacing Hiroshi Araki.

"Meanwhile, additional cases of covered up crack findings were also reported by Tepco. According to data Tepco provided to #METI, these cases involve flaws found in recirculation pumps and piping connecting the pumps to the primary circuit at Fukushima I-1 to I-5, at Fukushima II-3, and at #KashiwazakiKariwa 1 and 2. Unlike previously disclosed cases of concealed inspection results, the inspections at these reactors were carried out by Hitachi and Toshiba, rather than by GE.

"In one case, Hitachi has acknowledged that, while under contract for BWR inspection work for Tepco in 1992, it found cracks in neutron-measuring equipment at a BWR at Fukushima. Tepco officials then asked Hitachi personnel to delete the crack finds from reports that they wrote.

"According to a Hitachi spokesman, a senior official in Hitachi’s nuclear plant design division agreed to Tepco’s request because Tepco was a Hitachi client.

"As a consequence of these revelations, plans to build six new reactors totalling 9000MWe at three sites have been indefinitely frozen. This will halt over half the new nuclear capacity that Japan had intended to have in place soon after 2010, including Japan’s first two APWRs."

"[It] has to be said that #Tepco has a chequered history in divulging information about its #nuclear operations.

"In 2002, the Japanese government accused Tepco of false reporting in routine inspections of nuclear facilities and of concealing information about safety lapses over many years.

"The company had to close all its boiling water nuclear reactors - the sort caught up in the current crisis - until further inspections had taken place.

"Tepco eventually admitted to 200 occasions in which information had been falsified between 1977 and 2002. Further revelations of past concealment emerged five years later.

"As the company struggles to contain a crisis seen on a par with the Three Mile Island reactor meltdown in the US in 1979, it is easy to see why some Japan observers suspect Tepco is less than enthusiastic about revealing the full extent of what it knows.

"A Tepco spokesman said on Wednesday that 20 government officials had moved into the company's Tokyo offices.

"#BP suffered a huge loss to its prestige, lost its chief executive and put $40.9bn set aside for charges relating to the giant oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

"What will be the outcome for Tepco?"
